Mark 3

Jesus Heals a Man’s Crippled Hand
1Another time when Jesus went into a synagogue, a man with a crippled hand was there. 2Some people there wanted to see Jesus do something wrong so they could accuse him. They watched him closely to see if he would heal the man on the Sabbath day.
3Jesus said to the man with the crippled hand, “Stand up here in front of everyone.”
4Then Jesus asked the people, “Which is right on the Sabbath day: to do good, or to do evil? Is it right to save a life or to destroy one?” But they said nothing to answer him.
5Jesus was angry as he looked at the people. But he felt very sad because they were stubborn. Then he said to the man, “Let me see your hand.” The man put his hand out for Jesus, and it was healed. 6Then the Pharisees left and began making plans with the Herodians# A political group that followed Herod and his family. about a way to kill Jesus.
Many People Follow Jesus
7Jesus left with his followers for the lake. A large crowd from Galilee followed him. 8Also many people came from Judea, from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from the lands across the Jordan River, and from the area of Tyre and Sidon. They came because they had heard about all the things Jesus was doing. 9Jesus saw the crowds. So he told his followers to get a boat ready for him. He wanted the boat so that the many people would not crowd themselves against him. 10He had healed many people. So all the sick were pushing toward him to touch him. 11Some had evil spirits in them. When the evil spirits saw Jesus, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” 12But Jesus strongly commanded the spirits not to tell who he was.
Jesus Chooses His 12 Apostles
13Then Jesus went up on a hill and called some men to come to him. These were the men Jesus wanted, and they went up to him. 14Jesus chose 12 men and called them apostles.# Some Greek copies do not have this phrase. He wanted these 12 to be with him, and he wanted to send them to other places to preach. 15He also wanted them to have the power to force demons out of people. 16These are the 12 men he chose: Simon (Jesus gave him the name Peter); 17James and John, the sons of Zebedee (Jesus gave them the name Boanerges, which means “Sons of Thunder”); 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, 19and Judas Iscariot. Judas is the one who gave Jesus to his enemies.
People Say Jesus Has a Devil
20Then Jesus went back home. But again a crowd gathered. There were so many people that Jesus and his followers could not eat. 21His family heard about all these things. They went to get him because people were saying that Jesus was out of his mind.
22And the teachers of the law from Jerusalem were saying, “Beelzebul is living inside him! He uses power from the ruler of demons to force demons out.”
23So Jesus called the people together and used stories to teach them. He said, “Satan will not force his own demons out of people. 24A kingdom that fights against itself cannot continue. 25And a family that is divided cannot continue. 26And if Satan is against himself and fights against his own people, then he cannot continue. And that is the end of Satan. 27If a person wants to enter a strong man’s house and steal his things, first he must tie up the strong man. Then the thief can steal the things from the strong man’s house. 28I tell you the truth. All sins that people do can be forgiven. And all the bad things people say against God can be forgiven. 29But any person who says bad things against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. He is guilty of a sin that continues forever.”
30Jesus said this because the teachers of the law said that Jesus had an evil spirit inside him.
Jesus’ True Family
31Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent someone in to tell him to come out. 32Many people were sitting around Jesus. They said to him, “Your mother and brothers# Some Greek copies continue, “and sisters.” are waiting for you outside.”
33Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 34Then Jesus looked at those sitting around him. He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35My true brother and sister and mother are those who do the things God wants.”

Mark 3

A Man with a Withered Hand Healed
1 And he entered into the synagogue again, and a man who had a withered hand was there. 2And they were watching him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath, in order that they could accuse him. 3And he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Come into the middle.” 4And he said to them, “Is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5And looking around at them with anger, grieved at the hardness of their hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your#Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun hand.” And he stretched it#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation out, and his hand was restored. 6And the Pharisees went out immediately with the Herodians and began to conspire#Literally “began to give counsel”; the imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive (“began to”) against him with regard to how they could destroy him.
Jesus Heals Crowds by the Sea
7And Jesus went away with his disciples to the sea,#That is, the Sea of Galilee and a great crowd from Galilee followed him.#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation And from Judea 8and from Jerusalem and from Idumea and the other side of the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon a great crowd came to him because they#*Here “because” is supplied as a component of the participle (“heard”) which is understood as causal heard all that he was doing. 9And he told his disciples that a small boat should stand ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not press upon him. 10For he had healed many, so that all those who were suffering from diseases#Literally “had suffering” pressed about him in order that they could touch him. 11And the unclean spirits, whenever they saw him, were falling down before him and crying out, saying, “You are the Son of God!” 12And he warned them strictly that they should not make him known.
The Selection of the Twelve Apostles
13And he went up on the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14And he appointed twelve,#Some manuscripts add “whom he also named apostles” so that they would be with him and so that he could send them out to preach 15and to have authority to expel demons. 16And he appointed the twelve.#Most Greek manuscripts omit the phrase “and he appointed the twelve” And to Simon he gave the name Peter, 17and James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (and he gave to them the name Boanerges, that is, “Sons of Thunder”), 18and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot,#Literally “the Cananean,” but according to BDAG 507 s.v., this term has no relation at all to the geographical terms for Cana or Canaan, but is derived from the Aramaic term for “enthusiast, zealot” (see Luke 6:15; Acts 1:13) 19and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
A House Divided Cannot Stand
20And he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they were not even able to eat a meal. 21And when#*Here “when” is supplied as a component of the participle (“heard”) which is understood as temporal his family#Literally those “close to him” heard this,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation they went out to restrain him, for they were saying, “He has lost his mind!”
22And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul!” and “By the ruler of the demons he expels the demons!” 23And he called them to himself and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“called”) has been translated as a finite verb was speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan expel Satan? 24And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom is not able to stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he is not able to stand, but is at an end! 27But no one is able to enter into the house of a strong man and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“enter”) has been translated as a finite verb plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man, and then he can thoroughly plunder his house.
28“Truly I say to you that all the sins and the blasphemies will be forgiven the sons of men, however much they blaspheme. 29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit does not have forgiveness forever,#Literally “for the age” but is guilty of an eternal sin”—30because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers
31And his mother and his brothers arrived, and standing outside, they sent word to him to summon him. 32And a crowd was sitting around him, and they told him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers#Some manuscripts add “and your sisters” are outside looking for you.” 33And he answered them and#*Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“answered”) has been translated as a finite verb said, “Who is my mother or#Some manuscripts have “and” my brothers?” 34And looking around at those who were sitting around him in a circle, he said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers! 35For whoever does the will of God, this person is my brother and sister and mother.”
