Jesus Rises from Death
1Very early on the first day of the week, the women came to the tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. They brought the spices they had prepared. 2They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance of the tomb. 3They went in, but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, two men in shining clothes suddenly stood beside them. 5The women were very afraid; they bowed their heads to the ground. The men said to the women, “Why are you looking for a living person here? This is a place for the dead. 6Jesus is not here. He has risen from death! Do you remember what he said in Galilee? 7He said that the Son of Man must be given to evil men, be killed on a cross, and rise from death on the third day.” 8Then the women remembered what Jesus had said.
9The women left the tomb and told all these things to the 11 apostles and the other followers. 10These women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and some other women. The women told the apostles everything that had happened at the tomb. 11But they did not believe the women. It sounded like nonsense. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He looked in, but he saw only the cloth that Jesus’ body had been wrapped in. Peter went away to be alone, wondering about what had happened.
On the Road to Emmaus
13That same day two of Jesus’ followers were going to a town named Emmaus. It is about seven miles from Jerusalem. 14They were talking about everything that had happened. 15While they were discussing these things, Jesus himself came near and began walking with them. 16(They were not allowed to recognize Jesus.) 17Then he said, “What are these things you are talking about while you walk?”
The two followers stopped. Their faces were very sad. 18The one named Cleopas answered, “You must be the only one in Jerusalem who does not know what just happened there.”
19Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about?”
The followers said, “It is about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet from God to all the people. He said and did many powerful things. 20Our leaders and the leading priests gave him up to be judged and killed. They nailed him to a cross. 21But we were hoping that he would free the Jews. It is now the third day since this happened. 22And today some women among us told us some amazing things. Early this morning they went to the tomb, 23but they did not find his body there. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels. The angels said that Jesus was alive! 24So some of our group went to the tomb, too. They found it just as the women said, but they did not see Jesus.”
25Then Jesus said to them, “You are foolish and slow to realize what is true. You should believe everything the prophets said. 26They said that the Christ must suffer these things before he enters his glory.” 27Then Jesus began to explain everything that had been written about himself in the Scriptures. He started with Moses, and then he talked about what all the prophets had said about him.
28They came near the town of Emmaus, and Jesus acted as if he did not plan to stop there. 29But they begged him, “Stay with us. It is late; it is almost night.” So he went in to stay with them.
30Jesus sat down with them and took some bread. He gave thanks for the food and divided it. Then he gave it to them. 31And then, they were allowed to recognize Jesus. But when they saw who he was, he disappeared. 32They said to each other, “When Jesus talked to us on the road, it felt like a fire burning in us. It was exciting when he explained the true meaning of the Scriptures.”
33So the two followers got up at once and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the 11 apostles and others gathered. 34They were saying, “The Lord really has risen from death! He showed himself to Simon.”
35Then the two followers told what had happened on the road. They talked about how they recognized Jesus when he divided the bread.
Jesus Appears to His Followers
36While the two followers were telling this, Jesus himself stood among those gathered. He said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37They were fearful and terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. 38But Jesus said, “Why are you troubled? Why do you doubt what you see? 39Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me. You can see that I have a living body; a ghost does not have a body like this.”
40After Jesus said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41The followers were amazed and very happy. They still could not believe it. Jesus said to them, “Do you have any food here?” 42They gave him a piece of cooked fish. 43While the followers watched, Jesus took the fish and ate it.
44He said to them, “Remember when I was with you before? I said that everything written about me must happen—everything in the law of Moses, the books of the prophets, and the Psalms.”
45Then Jesus opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46He said to them, “It is written that the Christ would be killed and rise from death on the third day. 47-48You saw these things happen—you are witnesses. You must tell people to change their hearts and lives. If they do this, their sins will be forgiven. You must start at Jerusalem and preach these things in my name to all nations. 49Listen! My Father has promised you something; I will send it to you. But you must stay in Jerusalem until you have received that power from heaven.”
Jesus Goes Back to Heaven
50Jesus led his followers out of Jerusalem almost to Bethany. He raised his hands and blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he was separated from them and carried into heaven. 52They worshiped him and then went back to the city very happy. 53They stayed in the Temple all the time, praising God.

The Resurrection
(Mt 28.1–10; Mk 16.1–8; Jn 20.1–10)
1Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the entrance to the tomb, 3so they went in; but they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4They stood there puzzled about this, when suddenly two men in bright shining clothes stood by them. 5Full of fear, the women bowed down to the ground, as the men said to them, “Why are you looking among the dead for one who is alive? 6#Mt 16.21; 17.22–23; 20.18–19; Mk 8.31; 9.31; 10.33–34; Lk 9.22; 18.31–33He is not here; he has been raised. Remember what he said to you while he was in Galilee: 7‘The Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, be crucified, and three days later rise to life.’ ”
8Then the women remembered his words, 9returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven disciples and all the rest. 10The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James; they and the other women with them told these things to the apostles. 11But the apostles thought that what the women said was nonsense, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; he bent down and saw the linen wrappings but nothing else. Then he went back home amazed at what had happened.#24.12 Some manuscripts do not have verse 12.
The Walk to Emmaus
(Mk 16.12–13)
13On that same day two of Jesus' followers were going to a village named Emmaus, about eleven kilometres from Jerusalem, 14and they were talking to each other about all the things that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed, Jesus himself drew near and walked along with them; 16they saw him, but somehow did not recognize him. 17Jesus said to them, “What are you talking about to each other, as you walk along?”
They stood still, with sad faces. 18One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things that have been happening there these last few days?”
19 “What things?” he asked.
“The things that happened to Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered. “This man was a prophet and was considered by God and by all the people to be powerful in everything he said and did. 20Our chief priests and rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and he was crucified. 21And we had hoped that he would be the one who was going to set Israel free! Besides all that, this is now the third day since it happened. 22Some of the women of our group surprised us; they went at dawn to the tomb, 23but could not find his body. They came back saying they had seen a vision of angels who told them that he is alive. 24Some of our group went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they did not see him.”
25Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, how slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 26Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then to enter his glory?” 27And Jesus explained to them what was said about himself in all the Scriptures, beginning with the books of Moses and the writings of all the prophets.
28As they came near the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther; 29but they held him back, saying, “Stay with us; the day is almost over and it is getting dark.” So he went in to stay with them. 30He sat down to eat with them, took the bread, and said the blessing; then he broke the bread and gave it to them. 31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight. 32They said to each other, “Wasn't it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
33They got up at once and went back to Jerusalem, where they found the eleven disciples gathered together with the others 34and saying, “The Lord is risen indeed! He has appeared to Simon!”
35The two then explained to them what had happened on the road, and how they had recognized the Lord when he broke the bread.
Jesus Appears to his Disciples
(Mt 28.16–20; Mk 16.14–18; Jn 20.19–23; Acts 1.6–8)
36While the two were telling them this, suddenly the Lord himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”#24.36 Some manuscripts do not have and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37They were terrified, thinking that they were seeing a ghost. 38But he said to them, “Why are you alarmed? Why are these doubts coming up in your minds? 39Look at my hands and my feet, and see that it is I myself. Feel me, and you will know, for a ghost doesn't have flesh and bones, as you can see I have.”
40He said this and showed them his hands and his feet.#24.40 Some manuscripts do not have verse 40. 41They still could not believe, they were so full of joy and wonder; so he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” 42They gave him a piece of cooked fish, 43which he took and ate in their presence.
44Then he said to them, “These are the very things I told you about while I was still with you: everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the writings of the prophets, and the Psalms had to come true.”
45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “This is what is written: the Messiah must suffer and must rise from death three days later, 47and in his name the message about repentance and the forgiveness of sins must be preached to all nations, beginning in Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49#Acts 1.4And I myself will send upon you what my Father has promised. But you must wait in the city until the power from above comes down upon you.”
