Joshua 1

God’s Command to Joshua
1Moses was the servant of the Lord. Joshua son of Nun was Moses’ assistant. After Moses died, the Lord said to Joshua: 2“My servant Moses is dead. Now you and all these people go across the Jordan River. Go into the land I am giving to the people of Israel. 3I promised Moses I would give you this land. So I will give you every place you go in the land. 4All the land from the desert in the south to Lebanon in the north will be yours. All the land from the great river, the Euphrates, in the east, to the Mediterranean Sea in the west will be yours. This includes the land of the Hittites. 5Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. No one will be able to stop you all your life. I will not leave you. I will never leave you alone.
6“Joshua, be strong and brave! You must lead these people so they can take their land. This is the land I promised their fathers I would give them. 7Be strong and brave. Be sure to obey all the teachings my servant Moses gave you. If you follow them exactly, you will be successful in everything you do. 8Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night. Then you will be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything. 9Remember that I commanded you to be strong and brave. So don’t be afraid. The Lord your God will be with you everywhere you go.”
Joshua’s Orders to the People
10So Joshua gave orders to the officers of the people. He said, 11“Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your supplies ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan River. You will go and take the land the Lord your God is giving you.’”
12Then Joshua spoke to the people of Reuben, Gad and the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh. Joshua said, 13“Remember what Moses, the servant of the Lord, told you. He said the Lord your God would give you rest. And he said the Lord would give you this land. 14Now the Lord has given you this land east of the Jordan River. Your wives, your children and your animals may stay here. But your fighting men must dress for war and cross the Jordan River ahead of your brothers. You must help your brothers. 15The Lord has given you a place to rest. He will do the same for your brothers. But you must help them until they take the land. This is the land the Lord their God is giving them. Then you may return to your own land east of the Jordan River. That is the land that Moses, the servant of the Lord, gave you.”
16Then the people answered Joshua, “Anything you command us to do, we will do. Any place you send us, we will go. 17Just as we fully obeyed Moses, we will obey you. We ask only that the Lord your God be with you just as he was with Moses. 18Then, if anyone refuses to obey your commands or turns against you, he will be put to death. Just be strong and brave!”

Joshua 1

Joshua becomes the leader of Israel
1Moses, the LORD's servant, was dead. So the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, who had been the assistant of Moses. The LORD said:
2My servant Moses is dead. Now you must lead Israel across the River Jordan into the land I'm giving to all of you. 3Wherever you go, I'll give you that land, as I promised Moses.#Dt 11.24,25. 4It will reach from the Southern Desert to the Lebanon Mountains in the north, and to the north-east as far as the great River Euphrates. It will include the land of the Hittites,#1.4 the land…Hittites: This refers to the northern part of Syria, which had been the southernmost part of the Hittite empire. and the land from here at the River Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea on the west. 5Joshua, I will always be with you and help you as I helped Moses, and no one will ever be able to defeat you.#Dt 31.6,8; He 13.5.
6-8Long ago I promised the ancestors of Israel that I would give this land to their descendants. So be strong and brave! Be careful to do everything my servant Moses taught you. Never stop reading The Book of the Law#1.6-8 the Law: Or “Teachings”. he gave you. Day and night you must think about what it says. If you obey it completely, you and Israel will be able to take this land.#Dt 31.6,7,23.
9I've commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the LORD your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go.
Israel crosses the River Jordan and conquers Jericho
The eastern tribes promise to help
10Joshua ordered the tribal leaders 11to go through the camp and tell everyone:
In a few days we will cross the River Jordan to take the land that the LORD our God is giving us. So prepare as much food as you'll need for the march into the land.
12Joshua told the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and East Manasseh:#1.12 East Manasseh: The half of Manasseh that settled east of the River Jordan.#Nu 32.28-32; Dt 3.18-20; Js 22.1-6.
13-14The LORD's servant Moses said that the LORD our God has given you land here on the east side of the River Jordan, where you could live in peace. Your wives and children and your animals can stay here in the land Moses gave you. But all of you who can serve in our army must pick up your weapons and lead the men of the other tribes across the River Jordan. They are your relatives, so you must help them 15conquer the land that the LORD is giving them. The LORD will give peace to them as he has given peace to you, and then you can come back and settle here in the land that Moses promised you.
16The men answered:
We'll cross the River Jordan and help our relatives. We'll fight anywhere you send us. 17-18If the LORD our God will help you as he helped Moses, and if you are strong and brave, we will obey you as we obeyed Moses. We'll even put to death anyone who rebels against you or refuses to obey you.
