Jonah 2
2
1While Jonah was in the stomach of the fish, he prayed to the Lord his God. Jonah said,
2“I was in danger.
So I called to the Lord,
and he answered me.
I was about to die.
So I cried to you,
and you heard my voice.
3You threw me into the sea.
I went down, down into the deep sea.
The water was all around me.
Your powerful waves flowed over me.
4I said, ‘I was driven out of your presence.
But I hope to see your Holy Temple again.’
5The waters of the sea closed over me.
I was about to die.
The deep sea was all around me.
Seaweed wrapped around my head.
6I went down to where the mountains of the sea start to rise.
I thought I was locked in this prison forever.
But you saved me from death,
Lord my God.
7“When my life had almost gone,
I remembered the Lord.
Lord, I prayed to you.
And you heard my prayers in your Holy Temple.
8“People who worship useless idols
give up their loyalty to you.
9Lord, I will praise and thank you
while I give sacrifices to you.
I will make promises to you.
And I will do what I promise.
Salvation comes from the Lord!”
10Then the Lord spoke to the fish. And the fish spit Jonah out of its stomach onto the dry land.

Jonah 2
2
1Now Adonai prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Jonah’s Prayer of Distress
2Then Jonah prayed to Adonai his God from the belly of the fish,
3saying: “From my distress I cried to Adonai and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I cried for help and you heard my voice.
4For you hurled me from the deep into the heart of the seas, and currents swirled around me. All your waves and your breakers swept over me.”
5And I said, “I have been banished from before your eyes. Yet I will continue to look toward your holy Temple.”
6Waters surrounded me up to my soul. The deep sea engulfed me— reeds clung to my head.
7To the bottoms of the mountains I went down. The earth with her bars was around me, forever! Yet You brought my life up from the Pit, Adonai my God.
8As my soul was fading from me, I remembered Adonai and my prayer came to You, toward Your holy Temple.
9Those who watch worthless empty things forsake their mercy.
10But I, with a voice of thanks will sacrifice to you. What I vowed, I will pay. Salvation is from Adonai.”
11Then Adonai spoke to the fish and it vomited Jonah onto the dry land.
