Jeremiah 30

Promises of Hope
1These are the words that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah. 2The Lord, the God of Israel, said: “Jeremiah, write in a book all the words I have spoken to you. 3The days will come when I will make everything as good as it was before,” says the Lord. “I will bring Israel and Judah back from captivity,” says the Lord. “I will return them to the land I gave their ancestors. Then my people will own that land again!”
4The Lord spoke this message about the people of Israel and Judah: 5This is what the Lord said:
“We hear people crying from fear.
They are afraid. There is no peace.
6Ask this question, and consider it:
A man cannot have a baby.
So why do I see every strong man
holding his stomach in pain like a woman having a baby?
Why is everyone’s face turning white like a dead man’s face?
7This will be a terrible day!
There will never be another time like this.
This is a time of great trouble for the people of Jacob.
But they will be saved from it.”
8The Lord of heaven’s armies says, “At that time
I will break the yoke from their necks.
And I will break the ropes holding them.
Foreign people will never again make my people slaves!
9They will serve the Lord their God.
And they will serve David their king.
I will send that king to them.
10“So people of Jacob, my servants, don’t be afraid!
Israel, don’t be frightened,” says the Lord.
“I will save you from that faraway place where you are captives.
I will save your family from that land.
The people of Jacob will be safe and have peace again.
There will be no enemy to frighten them.
11I am with you and will save you,”
says the Lord.
“I scattered you among those nations.
Even if I completely destroy all those nations,
I will not destroy you.
You will be punished fairly.
But I will punish you.”
12This is what the Lord said:
“You people have a wound that cannot be cured.
Your injury will not heal.
13There is no one to argue your case.
There is no cure for your sores.
So you will not be healed.
14All those nations who were your friends have forgotten you.
They don’t care about you.
I hurt you as an enemy would.
I punished you very hard.
I did this because your guilt was so great.
I did this because your sins were so many.
15Why are you crying about your injury?
There is no cure for your pain.
I, the Lord, did these things to you because of your great guilt.
I did these things because of your many sins.
16But those nations that destroyed you will now be destroyed.
Your enemies will become captives.
Those who stole from you will have their own things stolen.
Those who took things from you in war will have their own things taken.
17I will bring back your health.
And I will heal your injuries,” says the Lord.
“This is because other people forced you out from among them.
Those people said about you, ‘No one cares about Jerusalem!’”
18This is what the Lord said:
“I will make the tents of Jacob’s people as they used to be.
And I will have pity on Israel’s houses.
The city will be rebuilt on its hill of ruins.
And the king’s palace will stand in its proper place.
19People in those places will sing songs of praise.
There will also be the sound of laughter.
I will give them many children.
They will not be small.
I will bring honor to them.
No one will look down on them.
20Their descendants will be like they were in the old days.
I will make their people strong before me.
And I will punish the nations who have hurt them.
21One of their own people will lead them.
Their ruler will come from among them.
He will come near to me when I invite him.
Who would dare to come uninvited?” says the Lord.
22“So you will be my people,
and I will be your God.”
23The Lord was very angry.
He punished the people.
And the punishment came like a storm.
It came like a hurricane against the evil people.
24The Lord will stay angry
until he finishes punishing the people.
He will stay angry
until he finishes the punishment he planned.
When that day comes,
you will understand this.

Israel and Judah Restored
1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: 2#Isa 30:8; Jer 36:32Thus says the Lord God of Israel: Write all the words that I have spoken to you in a book. 3#Jer 16:15; 29:14For surely the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel and Judah. The Lord says, I also will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.
4These are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah. 5#Isa 5:30; Am 5:16–18For thus says the Lord:
I have heard a sound of trembling,
of fear, and not of peace.
6#Jer 4:31; 6:24 Ask now, and see,
can a male labor with child?
Why do I see every man
with his hands on his loins, as a woman in labor,
and all faces turned pale?
7#Joel 2:11; Jer 30:10 Alas! for that day is great,
so that no one is like it;
it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble,
but he shall be saved out of it.
8#Eze 34:27; Isa 9:4; Jer 27:2 For it shall come to pass in that day, says the Lord of Hosts,
that I shall break his yoke from off their neck
and tear away their bonds,
and strangers shall no longer make them their slaves.
9#Hos 3:5; Lk 1:69; Isa 55:3–5 But they shall serve the Lord their God
and David their king,
whom I will raise up for them.
10#Isa 43:5; Jer 46:27–28 Therefore do not fear, O My servant Jacob,
says the Lord,
nor be dismayed, O Israel;
for I will save you from afar,
and your seed from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob shall return and shall be in rest and be quiet,
and no one shall make him afraid.
11#Jer 10:24; 4:27 For I am with you, says the Lord,
to save you.
Although I make a full end of all nations
wherever I have scattered you,
yet I will not make a full end of you.
But I will correct you in measure
and will not leave you altogether unpunished.
12#Jer 15:18; 2Ch 36:16For thus says the Lord:
Your bruise is incurable
and your wound is severe.
13#Jer 8:22; 46:11 There is no one to plead your cause
that you may be bound up.
You have no healing medicines.
14#Job 30:21; Jer 5:6 All your lovers have forgotten you;
they do not seek you;
for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy,
with the chastisement of a cruel one,
because of the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins are numerous.
15#Jer 30:12; 30:14 Why do you cry because of your affliction?
Your sorrow is incurable.
Because of the multitude of your iniquities, because your sins are numerous,
I have done these things to you.
16#Jer 10:25; Isa 14:2 Therefore all who devour you will be devoured;
and all your adversaries, every one of them, will go into captivity.
And those who plunder you will become plunder,
and all who prey upon you I will give for prey.
17#Ex 15:26; Ps 107:20 For I will restore health to you,
and I will heal you of your wounds,
says the Lord,
because they called you an outcast, saying,
“This is Zion whom no man cares for.”
18#Jer 30:3; Ps 102:13Thus says the Lord:
I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents
and have mercy on his dwelling places;
and the city will be built upon her own heap,
and the palace will remain on its rightful place.
19#Isa 35:10; 51:11 Out of them will proceed thanksgiving
and the voice of those who make merry;
and I will multiply them,
and they will not be few.
I will also glorify them,
and they will not be small.
20Their children also will be as before,
and their congregation will be established before Me;
and I will punish all who oppress them.
21#Nu 16:5; Ge 49:10 Their leader shall be one of them,
and their ruler shall proceed from their midst;
and I will cause him to draw near and he will approach Me;
for who is this that dares
to approach Me?
says the Lord.
22#Jer 24:7; 31:1 You shall be My people,
and I will be your God.
23#Jer 23:19–20; 25:32 Look, the whirlwind of the Lord
goes forth with fury,
a continuing whirlwind;
it will fall with pain upon the head of the wicked.
24#Jer 23:20; 4:28 The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return
until He has done it
and until He has performed the intentions of His heart.
In the latter days
you will understand it.
