Exodus 2

Baby Moses
1There was a man from the family of Levi. He married a woman who was also from the family of Levi. 2She became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw how wonderful the baby was, and she hid him for three months. 3But after three months, she was not able to hide the baby any longer. So she got a basket made of reeds and covered it with tar so that it would float. She put the baby in the basket. Then she put the basket among the tall grass at the edge of the Nile River. 4The baby’s sister stood a short distance away. She wanted to see what would happen to him.
5Then the daughter of the king of Egypt came to the river. She was going to take a bath. Her servant girls were walking beside the river. She saw the basket in the tall grass. So she sent her slave girl to get it. 6The king’s daughter opened the basket and saw the baby boy. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. She said, “This is one of the Hebrew babies.”
7Then the baby’s sister asked the king’s daughter, “Would you like me to find a Hebrew woman to nurse the baby for you?”
8The king’s daughter said, “Yes, please.” So the girl went and got the baby’s own mother.
9The king’s daughter said to the woman, “Take this baby and nurse him for me. I will pay you.” So the woman took her baby and nursed him. 10After the child had grown older, the woman took him to the king’s daughter. She adopted the baby as her own son. The king’s daughter named him Moses,# The name Moses sounds like the Hebrew word for “to pull out.” because she had pulled him out of the water.
Moses Helps His People
11Moses grew and became a man. One day he visited his people, the Hebrews. He saw that they were forced to work very hard. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew man, one of Moses’ own people. 12Moses looked all around and saw that no one was watching. So he killed the Egyptian and hid his body in the sand.
13The next day Moses returned and saw two Hebrew men fighting each other. He saw that one man was in the wrong. Moses said to that man, “Why are you hitting one of your own people?”
14The man answered, “Who made you our ruler and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?”
Then Moses was afraid. He thought, “Now everyone knows what I did.”
15When the king heard about what Moses had done, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses ran away from the king and went to live in the land of Midian. There he sat down near a well.
Moses in Midian
16There was a priest in Midian who had seven daughters. His daughters went to that well to get water for their father’s sheep. They were trying to fill the water troughs for their father’s sheep. 17But some shepherds came and chased the girls away. Then Moses defended the girls and watered their sheep.
18Then they went back to their father, Reuel, also called Jethro. He asked them, “Why have you come home early today?”
19The girls answered, “The shepherds chased us away. But an Egyptian defended us. He got water for us and watered our sheep.”
20He asked his daughters, “Where is this man? Why did you leave him? Invite him to eat with us.”
21Moses agreed to stay with Jethro. And he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses to be his wife. 22Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom.# This name sounds like the Hebrew word meaning “a stranger there.” Moses named him this because Moses was a stranger in a land that was not his own.
23After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The people of Israel groaned because they were forced to work very hard. They cried for help. And God heard them. 24God heard their cries, and he remembered the agreement he had made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 25God saw the troubles of the people of Israel, and he was concerned about them.

The Birth and Early Life of Moses
1And a man from the family#Literally “house” of Levi went, and he took a descendent of Levi.#Literally “daughter of Levi” 2And the woman conceived, and she gave birth to a son, and she saw him, that he was a fine baby, and she hid him three months. 3But when she could no longer hide him, she got a papyrus basket for him, and she coated it with tar and with pitch, and she placed the boy in it, and she placed it among the reeds on the bank of the Nile. 4And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5And the daughter of Pharaoh went down to wash at the Nile, while her maidservants were walking alongside the Nile, and she saw the basket in the midst of the reeds, and she sent her slave woman for it and took it 6and opened it and saw him—the boy—and it was a lad weeping, and she had compassion for him and said, “This must be from the boys of the Hebrews.”#Each instance of the implied “she” in verses 5 and 6 is the daughter of Pharaoh 7And his sister said to the daughter of Pharaoh, “Shall I go and call for you a woman from the Hebrews who is nursing so that she will nurse the boy for you?” 8And the daughter of Pharaoh said to her, “Go.” And the girl went, and she called the mother of the boy. 9And the daughter of Pharaoh said, “Take this boy and nurse him for me, and I myself will give you wages, and the woman took the boy, and she nursed him. 10And the boy grew, and she brought him to the daughter of Pharaoh, and he became her son, and she called his name Moses, and she said, “Because I drew him out from the water.”
11And then#Literally “and he/it was” in those days when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers, and he saw their forced labor,#Literally “burdens” or “burdensome labor” and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, one of his brothers.#Or “a Hebrew man from his brothers” 12And he turned here and there, and he saw no one,#Literally “and he saw that there was not a man” and he struck the Egyptian, and he hid him in the sand. 13And he went out on the second day, and there were two Hebrew men fighting, and he said to the guilty one, “Why do you strike your neighbor?” 14And he said, “Who appointed you as a commander#Literally “put you for a man, a commander” or “placed you for a man, a commander” and a judge over us? Are you intending to kill me like you killed the Egyptian?” And Moses was afraid, and he said, “Surely the matter has become known.” 15And Pharaoh heard this matter, and he sought to kill Moses, and Moses fled from Pharaoh, and he lived in the land of Midian, and he lived at a certain well.#Literally “the well”
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.#The Hebrew noun translated “flock” is used here and in verses 17 and 19 collectively for sheep or goats or a mix of the two 17And the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and came to their rescue and watered their flock. 18And they came to Reuel, their father, and he said, “Why have you come so quickly#Literally “why did you hasten coming” today?” 19And they said, “An Egyptian man delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20And he said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why then#Literally “why this” have you left the man? Call him so that he can eat some food.”#Literally “call to or “summon/invite” him and he will eat bread” 21And Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses. 22And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom because he said, “I am an alien in a foreign land.”#The word translated “alien” sounds like the first syllable in the name Gershom. The second syllable sounds like the word for “there”
23And then#Literally “and he/it was” during those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” groaned because of the work, and they cried out, and their cry for help because of the work went up to God. 24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob, 25and God saw the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and God took notice.#Or “and God knew”
