Exodus 15

The Song of Moses
1Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
“I will sing to the Lord
because he is worthy of great honor.
He has thrown the horse and its rider
into the sea.
2The Lord gives me strength and makes me sing.
He has saved me.
He is my God,
and I will praise him.
He is the God of my ancestors,
and I will honor him.
3The Lord is a great warrior.
The Lord is his name.
4The chariots and soldiers of the king of Egypt
he has thrown into the sea.
The king’s best officers
are drowned in the Red Sea.
5The deep waters covered them.
They sank to the bottom like a rock.
6Your right hand, Lord,
is amazingly strong.
Lord, your right hand
broke the enemy into pieces.
7In your great victory
you destroyed those who were against you.
Your anger destroyed them,
like fire burning straw.
8Just a blast of your breath,
and the waters were blown back.
The moving water stood up like a wall.
And the deep waters became solid in the middle of the sea.
9“The enemy bragged,
‘I’ll chase them and catch them.
I’ll take all their riches.
I’ll take all I want.
I’ll pull out my sword,
and my hand will destroy them.’
10But you blew on them with your breath
and covered them with the sea.
They sank like lead
in the powerful water.
11“Are there any gods like you, Lord?
No! There are no gods like you.
You are wonderfully holy.
You are amazingly powerful.
You do great miracles.
12You reached out with your right hand,
and the earth swallowed our enemies.
13You keep your loving promise.
You lead the people you have saved.
With your strength you will guide them
to your holy land.
14“The other nations will hear this and tremble with fear.
Terror will take hold of the Philistines.
15The leaders of the tribes of Edom will be very frightened.
The powerful men of Moab will shake with fear.
The people of Canaan will lose all their courage.
16Those people will be filled with fear.
When they see your strength,
they will be as still as a rock.
They will be still until your people pass by, Lord.
They will be still until the people you have bought from slavery pass by.
17You will lead your people and place them
on your very own mountain.
Lord, that is the place that you made for yourself to live.
Lord, that is the temple that your hands have made.
18The Lord will rule forever!”
19The horses, chariot drivers and chariots of the king of Egypt went into the sea. And the Lord covered them with water from the sea. But the Israelites walked through the sea on dry land. 20Then Aaron’s sister Miriam, who was a prophetess, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her, playing tambourines and dancing. 21Miriam told them:
“Sing to the Lord
because he is worthy of great honor.
He has thrown the horse and its rider
into the sea.”
The Bitter Water
22Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea. The people went into the Desert of Shur. They traveled for three days in the desert but found no water. 23Then they came to Marah, where there was water. But they could not drink it because it was too bitter. That is why the place was named Marah.# This name means “bitter.” 24The people grumbled to Moses. They asked, “What will we drink?”
25Moses cried out to the Lord. So the Lord showed him a tree. Moses threw the tree into the water. And the water became good to drink.
There the Lord gave the people a rule and a law to live by. There he also tested their loyalty to him. 26He said, “You must obey the Lord, your God. You must do what the Lord said is right. You must obey all his laws and keep his rules. If you do these things, I will not give you any of the sicknesses I gave the Egyptians. I am the Lord. I am the Lord who heals you.”
27Then the people traveled to Elim. At Elim there were 12 springs of water and 70 palm trees. So the people camped there near the water.

Exodus 15

Song of Victory at the Sea
1Then Moses and the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” sang this song to Yahweh, and they said,#Literally “and they said, saying”
“Let me sing to Yahweh because he is highly exalted;
the horse and its rider he hurled into the sea.
2Yah#a shortened form of “Yahweh” is my strength and song, and he has become my salvation;#Literally “he was for me for salvation”
this is my God, and I will praise him—the God of my father—and I will exalt him.
3Yahweh is a man of war; Yahweh is his name.
4The chariots of Pharaoh and his army he cast into the sea,
and his choice adjutants were sunk in the Red Sea.#Literally “sea of reed”
5The deep waters covered them;
they went down into the depths like a stone.
6Yahweh, your right hand is glorious in power;
Yahweh, your right hand destroyed the enemy.
7And in the greatness of your majesty you overthrew those standing up to you;
you released your fierce anger, and it consumed them like stubble.
8And by the breath of your nostrils waters were piled up;
waves stood like a heap;
deep waters in the middle of the sea congealed.
9The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide plunder,
my desire will be full of them, I will draw my sword, my hand will destroy them.’
10You blew with your breath; the sea covered them;
they dropped like lead in the mighty waters.
11Who is like you among the gods, Yahweh?
Who is like you—glorious in holiness, awesome in praiseworthy actions, doing wonders?#Hebrew “wonder”
12You stretched out your right hand;
the earth swallowed them.
13In your loyal love you led the people whom you redeemed;
in your strength you guided them to the abode of your holiness.#Or “your holy dwelling”
14Peoples heard; they trembled;
anguish seized the inhabitants of Philistia.
15Then the chiefs of Edom were horrified; great distress seized the leaders of Moab;
all of the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.
16Terror and dread fell on them;
at the greatness of your arm they became silent like the stone,
until your people passed by, Yahweh,
until the people whom you bought passed by.
17You brought them and planted them on the mountain of your inheritance,
a place you made for yourself to inhabit, Yahweh,
a sanctuary, Lord, that your hands established.
18Yahweh will reign as king forever and ever.”
19When the horses#Hebrew “horse” of Pharaoh came into the sea with his chariots#Hebrew “chariot” and with his charioteers, Yahweh brought back upon them the waters of the sea, and the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” traveled on dry ground through the middle of the sea. 20And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took her#Literally “the tambourine” tambourine in her hand, and all of the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances. 21And Miriam answered,#Literally “answered to them” “Sing to Yahweh because he is highly exalted; the horse and its rider he hurled into the sea.”
Yahweh Provides Water at Marah
22And Moses caused Israel to set out from the Red Sea,#Literally “sea of reed” and they went out into the desert of Shur, and they traveled three days in the desert, and they did not find water. 23And they came to Marah, and they were not able to drink water from Marah because it was bitter. Therefore it was named#Literally “its name was called”; the Hebrew word for “bitter” is pronounced “marah” Marah. 24And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25And he cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them. 26And he said, “If you carefully listen to the voice of Yahweh your God and you do what is right in his eyes and give heed to his commands and you keep all his rules, then I will not bring about on you any of the diseases#Hebrew “disease” that I brought about on Egypt, because I am Yahweh your healer.
27And they came to Elim, and twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees were there, and they encamped there at the water.
