1 Chronicles 5

Reuben’s Children
1Reuben was Israel’s first son. Reuben should have received the special privileges of the oldest son. But he had physical relations with his father’s slave woman. So those special privileges were given to Joseph’s sons. (Joseph was a son of Israel.) In the family history Reuben’s name is not listed as the first son. 2Judah became stronger than his brothers. And a leader came from his family. But Joseph’s family received the privileges that belonged to the oldest son. 3Reuben was the first son born to Israel. Reuben’s sons were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
4These were the children of Joel: Shemaiah was Joel’s son. Gog was Shemaiah’s son. Shimei was Gog’s son. 5Micah was Shimei’s son. Reaiah was Micah’s son. Baal was Reaiah’s son. 6Beerah was Baal’s son. Beerah was a leader of the tribe of Reuben. Tiglath-Pileser king of Assyria captured Beerah and took him away.
7Joel’s brothers and all his family groups are listed just as they are written in their family histories: Jeiel was the first, then Zechariah 8and Bela. (Bela was the son of Azaz. Azaz was Shema’s son. Shema was Joel’s son.) They lived in the area of Aroer all the way to Nebo and Baal Meon. 9Bela’s people lived to the east. Their land went as far as the edge of the desert, which is beside the Euphrates River. They lived there because they had too many cattle for the land of Gilead.
10When Saul was king, Bela’s people fought a war against the Hagrite people. And they defeated the Hagrites. Then Bela’s people lived in the tents that had belonged to the Hagrites. They lived in all the area east of Gilead.
Gad’s Children
11The people from the tribe of Gad lived near the Reubenite people. The Gadites lived in the area of Bashan all the way to Salecah. 12Joel was the main leader in Bashan. Shapham was the second leader. Then Janai and Shaphat were leaders.
13The seven relatives in their families were Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia and Eber. 14They were the descendants of Abihail. Abihail was Huri’s son. Huri was Jaroah’s son. Jaroah was Gilead’s son. Gilead was Michael’s son. Michael was Jeshishai’s son. Jeshishai was Jahdo’s son. Jahdo was the son of Buz. 15Ahi was Abdiel’s son. Abdiel was Guni’s son. Ahi was the leader of their family.
16The Gadite people lived in Gilead, Bashan and in the small towns around Bashan. They also lived on all the pasturelands in the Plain of Sharon all the way to the borders.
17All these people’s names were written in the family history of Gad. This was done during the time Jotham was king of Judah and Jeroboam was king of Israel.
Soldiers Skilled in War
18There were 44,760 fighters from the tribes of Reuben and Gad and the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh. They were brave men who could use shields and swords. They could use their bows well. They were skilled in war. 19They started a war against the Hagrites and the people of Jetur, Naphish and Nodab. 20The men from the tribes of Manasseh, Reuben and Gad prayed to God in the war. They asked God to help them. So he helped them because they trusted him. He allowed them to defeat the Hagrites. And they also defeated all those who were with the Hagrites. 21They took the animals that belonged to the Hagrites. They took 50,000 camels, 250,000 sheep and 2,000 donkeys. They also captured 100,000 people. 22Many Hagrites were killed. This is because God helped the people of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh. Then they lived there until Babylon captured them and took them away.
The Eastern Half-Tribe of Manasseh
23There were many people in the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh. They lived in the area of Bashan all the way to Baal Hermon, Senir and Mount Hermon.
24These were the family leaders: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel. They were all strong, brave and famous men. And they were leaders in their families. 25But they sinned against the God that their ancestors had worshiped. They began worshiping the gods of the people in that land. And those were the people God was destroying. 26So the God of Israel made Pul king of Assyria want to go to war. Pul was also called Tiglath-Pileser. He captured the people of Reuben, Gad and the eastern half-tribe of Manasseh. And he took them away to Halah, Habor, Hara and near the Gozan River. And they have lived there from that time until this day.

Descendants of Reuben
1The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel—he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph son of Israel—so he is not reckoned as the firstborn in the genealogical record.
2Though Judah was the strongest among his brothers, and a ruler came from him, the birthright belonged to Joseph.
3The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Enoch, Pallu, Hezron and Carmi.
4The descendants of Joel: his son Shemaiah, his son Gog, his son Shimei,
5his son Micah, his son Reaiah, his son Baal
6and his son Beerah whom Tillegath-pilneser king of Assyria carried into exile. He was the leader of the Reubenites.
7His kinsmen by their families, as listed in their genealogical records: the leader Jeiel, Zechariah,
8and Bela son of Azaz, son of Shema, son of Joel. They settled in Aroer as far as Nebo and Baal-meon,
9while in the east they settled as far as the entrance of the wilderness from this side of the river Euphrates, because their cattle had multiplied in the land of Gilead.
10Now in the days of Saul they had made war with the Hagrites, who fell by their hand. So they lived in their encampments in the entire eastern area of Gilead.
11Now the sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan as far as Salcah:
12Joel the leader, Shapham second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.
13Their kinsmen according to their ancestral families: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia and Eber—seven in all.
14These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, son of Jaroah, son of Gilead, son of Michael, son of Jehishai, son of Jahdo, son of Buz.
15Ahi son of Abdiel, son of Guni was leader of their ancestral families.
16They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its surrounding villages, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon, up to their borders.
17All these were recorded by genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam king of Israel.
18The sons of Reuben and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 warriors ready for war—men who carried shield and sword and drew the bow, and were skilled in battle.
19So they made war with the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab.
20They received help against them, so that the Hagrites and all who were with them were delivered into their hand, for they cried out to God during the battle. He answered their supplications, because they put their trust in Him.
21They took away their livestock: 50,000 of their camels, 250,000 sheep, and 2,000 donkeys, as well as 100,000 people.
22For many fell slain, because the war was of God. So they dwelt in their place until the exile.
Manesseh East of Jordan
23Now the children of the half-tribe of Manasseh settled in the land from Bashan to Baal-hermon, Senir and Mount Hermon. They were numerous.
24These were the heads of their clans: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, Jahdiel. They were mighty men of valor, famous men, heads of their clans.
25But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and prostituted themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land whom God had destroyed before them.
26So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of King Pul of Assyria—the spirit of Tillegath-pilneser king of Assyria—and he carried away the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara and to the river of Gozan, to this day.
Descendants of Levi
27The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
28The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
29The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses and Miriam. The sons of Aaron: Nadav and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
30Eleazar fathered Phinehas and Phinehas fathered Abishua.
31Abishua fathered Bukki, and Bukki fathered Uzzi.
32Uzzi fathered Zerahiah and Zerahiah fathered Meraioth.
33Meraioth fathered Amariah and Amariah fathered Ahitub.
34Ahitub fathered Zadok and Zadok fathered Ahimaaz.
35Ahimaaz fathered Azariah and Azariah fathered Johanan.
36Johanan fathered Azariah, who served as kohen in the House that Solomon built in Jerusalem.
37Azariah fathered Amariah, and Amariah fathered Ahitub.
38Ahitub fathered Zadok, and Zadok fathered Shallum.
39Shallum fathered Hilkiah, and Hilkiah fathered Azariah,
40and Azariah fathered Seraiah, and Seraiah fathered Jehozadak.
41Jehozadak went into captivity when Adonai exiled Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar.
