Israel’s Family
1The sons of Israel, also called Jacob, were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
Judah’s Family
3Judah’s sons were Er, Onan and Shelah. A Canaanite woman, the daughter of Shua, was their mother. Judah’s first son, Er, did what the Lord said was wicked. So the Lord put him to death. 4Judah’s daughter-in-law Tamar gave birth to Perez and Zerah. Judah was the father. So Judah had five sons.
5Perez’s sons were Hezron and Hamul.
6Zerah had five sons. They were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol and Darda.
7Carmi’s son was Achan. He caused trouble for Israel because he took things that had been given to the Lord to be destroyed.
8Ethan’s son was Azariah.
9Hezron’s sons were Jerahmeel, Ram and Caleb.
10Ram was Amminadab’s father. And Amminadab was Nashon’s father. Nahshon was the leader of the people of Judah. 11Nahshon was the father of Salmon. Salmon was the father of Boaz. 12Boaz was the father of Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse.
13Jesse’s first son was Eliab. His second son was Abinadab. His third son was Shimea. 14His fourth son was Nethanel. His fifth son was Raddai. 15Jesse’s sixth son was Ozem, and his seventh son was David. 16Their sisters were Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah’s three sons were Abishai, Joab and Asahel. 17Abigail was the mother of Amasa. Amasa’s father was an Ishmaelite named Jether.
Caleb’s Family
18Caleb son of Hezron had children by his wife Azubah and by Jerioth. Caleb and Azubah’s sons were Jesher, Shobab and Ardon. 19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath. They had a son named Hur. 20Hur was the father of Uri. Uri was the father of Bezalel.
21Later, when Hezron was 60 years old, he married the daughter of Makir. Makir was Gilead’s father. Hezron had intimate relations with Makir’s daughter, and she had a son named Segub. 22Segub was the father of Jair. Jair controlled 23 cities in the country of Gilead. 23(But Geshur and Aram captured the Towns of Jair. They also captured Kenath and the small towns around it. There were 60 towns in all.) All these were descendants of Makir, the father of Gilead.
24After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, his wife Abijah had his son. He was named Ashur. Ashur became the father of Tekoa.
Jerahmeel’s Family
25Jerahmeel was Hezron’s first son. Jerahmeel’s sons were Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem and Ahijah. Ram was Jerahmeel’s first son. 26Jerahmeel had another wife, who was named Atarah. She was the mother of Onam.
27Jerahmeel’s first son, Ram, had sons. They were Maaz, Jamin and Eker.
28Onam’s sons were Shammai and Jada.
Shammai’s sons were Nadab and Abishur.
29Abishur’s wife was named Abihail. Abishur and Abihail’s sons were Ahban and Molid.
30Nadab’s sons were Seled and Appaim. Seled died without having children.
31Appaim’s son was Ishi. Ishi was the father of Sheshan.
Sheshan was the father of Ahlai.
32Jada was Shammai’s brother. Jada’s sons were Jether and Jonathan. Jether died without having children.
33Jonathan’s sons were Peleth and Zaza.
These were Jerahmeel’s descendants.
34Sheshan did not have any sons, only daughters. He had a servant from Egypt named Jarha. 35Sheshan let his daughter marry his servant Jarha. Then she had a son named Attai.
36Attai was the father of Nathan. Nathan was the father of Zabad. 37Zabad was the father of Ephlal. Ephlal was the father of Obed. 38Obed was the father of Jehu. Jehu was the father of Azariah. 39Azariah was the father of Helez. Helez was the father of Eleasah. 40Eleasah was the father of Sismai. Sismai was the father of Shallum. 41Shallum was the father of Jekamiah. And Jekamiah was the father of Elishama.
Caleb’s Family
42Caleb was Jerahmeel’s brother. Caleb’s first son was Mesha. Mesha was the father of Ziph. And his son Mareshah was the father of Hebron.
43Hebron’s sons were Korah, Tappuah, Rekem and Shema. 44Shema was the father of Raham. Raham was the father of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai. 45Shammai’s son was Maon. Maon was the father of Beth Zur.
46Caleb’s slave woman was named Ephah. She was the mother of Haran, Moza and Gazez. Haran was the father of Gazez.
47Jahdai’s sons were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah and Shaaph.
48Caleb had another slave woman named Maacah. She was the mother of Sheber and Tirhanah. 49She was also the mother of Shaaph and Sheva. Shaaph was the father of Madmannah. Sheva was the father of Macbenah and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Acsah.
50-51These were Caleb’s descendants: Caleb’s son Hur was the first son of his mother Ephrathah. Hur’s sons were Shobal, Salma and Hareph. Shobal was the father of Kiriath Jearim. Salma was the father of Bethlehem. And Hareph was the father of Beth Gader.
52Shobal was the father of Kiriath Jearim. These were Shobal’s descendants: Haroeh, half the Manahathites, 53and the family groups of Kiriath Jearim. Shobal was also the ancestor of the Ithrites, Puthites, Shumathites and the Mishraites. The Zorathites and the Eshtaolites came from the Mishraite people.
54Salma’s descendants were Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, half the Manahathites and the Zorites. 55His descendants were also the families who lived at Jabez. These were the people who wrote and copied important papers. These people were the Tirathites, Shimeathites and Sucathites. They were from the Kenite family group who came from Hammath. He was the father of the people living in Recab.

The Descendants of Judah
1-2Jacob#2.1,2 Jacob: See the note at 1.34. was the father of twelve sons: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
3Judah and his Canaanite wife Bathshua had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah. But the Lord had Er put to death, because he disobeyed and did what the Lord hated. 4Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar also had two sons: Perez and Zerah.
5Perez was the father of Hezron and Hamul. 6Zerah was the father of Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Calcol, and Darda.#2.6 Darda: Most Hebrew manuscripts and two ancient translations (see also 1 Kings 4.30,31); some Hebrew manuscripts “Dara.” 7#Js 7.1. Achan,#2.7 Achan: The Hebrew text has “Achar,” which means “trouble.” who was a descendant of Zerah and the son of Carmi, caused trouble for Israel, because he kept for himself things that belonged only to the Lord.#2.7 Achan … the Lord: See Joshua 7.1-26. 8Ethan's son was Azariah.
The Ancestors of King David
9Hezron was the father of Jerahmeel, Ram, and Caleb.#2.9 Caleb: The Hebrew text has “Chelubai,” another form of the name. 10Ram was the father of Amminadab and the grandfather of Nahshon, a tribal leader of Judah. 11Nahshon's descendants included Salma, Boaz, 12Obed, and Jesse. 13-15Jesse had seven sons, who were born in the following order: Eliab, Abinadab, Shimea, Nethanel, Raddai, Ozem, and David. 16Jesse also had two daughters: Zeruiah and Abigail. Zeruiah was the mother of Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. 17Abigail's husband was Jether, who was a descendant of Ishmael, and their son was Amasa.
The Descendants of Hezron
18Hezron's son Caleb married Azubah, and their daughter was Jerioth,#2.18 married Azubah … Jerioth: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. the mother of Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19After the death of Azubah, Caleb married Ephrath. Their son Hur 20was the father of Uri and the grandfather of Bezalel.
21When Hezron was 60 years old, he married the daughter of Machir, who settled the region of Gilead. Their son Segub 22was the father of Jair, who ruled 23 villages in the region of Gilead. 23Some time later the nations of Geshur and Aram captured 60 towns in that region, including the villages that belonged to Jair, as well as the town of Kenath and the nearby villages. Everyone from the region of Gilead was a descendant of Machir.
24After the death of Hezron, Caleb married Ephrath, his father's wife. Their son was Ashhur,#2.24 After the death of Hezron … Ashhur: Two ancient translations; Hebrew “After Hezron died in Caleb-Ephrathah, Abijah his wife gave birth to Ashhur.” who later settled the town of Tekoa.
The Descendants of Jerahmeel
25Jerahmeel, Hezron's oldest son, was the father of Ram, Bunah, Oren, Ozem, and Ahijah. 26Jerahmeel had a second wife, Atarah, who gave birth to Onam. 27Ram was the father of Maaz, Jamin, and Eker. 28Onam was the father of Shammai and Jada.
Shammai was the father of Nadab and Abishur. 29Abishur married Abihail, and their two sons were Ahban and Molid. 30Nadab was the father of Seled and Appaim. Seled had no children; 31Appaim's son was Ishi, the father of Sheshan and the grandfather of Ahlai.
32Jada was the father of Jether and Jonathan. Jether had no children, 33but Jonathan had two sons: Peleth and Zaza.
34-35Sheshan had no sons, and so he let one of his daughters marry Jarha, his Egyptian slave. Their son was Attai, 36the father of Nathan and the grandfather of Zabad. 37-41Zabad's descendants included Ephlal, Obed, Jehu, Azariah, Helez, Eleasah, Sismai, Shallum, Jekamiah, and Elishama.
The Descendants of Caleb
42Caleb, Jerahmeel's brother, had the following descendants: Mesha,#2.42 Mesha: Hebrew; one ancient translation “Mareshah.” Ziph, Mareshah,#2.42 following descendants … Mareshah: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. Hebron, 43and Hebron's four sons, Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema. 44Shema was the father of Raham and the grandfather of Jorkeam. Rekem was the father of Shammai, 45the grandfather of Maon, and the great-grandfather of Bethzur.
46Ephah was one of Caleb's wives,#2.46 wives: This translates a Hebrew word for women who were legally bound to a man, but without the full privileges of a wife. and their sons were Haran, Moza, and Gazez. Haran named his son after his brother Gazez. 47Ephah was the daughter of Jahdai, who was also the father of Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, and Shaaph.#2.47 Shaaph: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text of verse 47.
48Maacah was another of Caleb's wives,#2.48 wives: See the note at 2.46. and their sons were Sheber and Tirhanah. 49Later, they had two more sons: Shaaph the father of Madmannah, and Sheva the father of Machbenah and Gibea. Caleb's daughter was Achsah. 50-51All of these were Caleb's descendants.
Hur, the oldest son of Caleb and Ephrath, had three sons: Shobal, Salma, and Hareph, who settled the town of Beth-Gader. 52Shobal, who settled the town of Kiriath-Jearim, was the ancestor of Haroeh, half of the Menuhoth clan, 53and the clans that lived near Kiriath-Jearim; they were the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites. The Zorathites and the Eshtaolites were descendants of the Mishraites.
54Salma settled the town of Bethlehem and was the ancestor of the Netophathites, the people of Atroth-Bethjoab, half of the Manahathite clan, and the Zorites. 55Salma was also the ancestor of the clans in Jabez that kept the court and government records; they were the Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sucathites. These clans were the descendants of Hammath the Kenite, who was also the ancestor of the Rechabites.
