Le serviteur habile
1Jésus raconte cette histoire à ses disciples : « Un homme riche a un serviteur, responsable de sa maison. Des gens viennent lui dire : “Ton serviteur gaspille toutes tes richesses.” 2Alors le maître appelle son serviteur et il lui dit : “Qu’est-ce que j’entends dire de toi ? Rends-moi tous les comptes de la maison. Maintenant, tu ne pourras plus t’occuper de mes affaires !” 3Le serviteur se dit : “Mon maître ne veut plus que je m’occupe de ses affaires. Qu’est-ce que je vais faire ? Travailler la terre, je n’en ai pas la force. Devenir mendiant, j’en ai honte. 4Je sais ce que je vais faire ! Alors, quand mon maître va me retirer mon travail, des gens me recevront chez eux.” 5Et il appelle, un par un, tous ceux qui doivent quelque chose à son maître. Il demande au premier : “Tu dois combien à mon maître ?” 6L’homme lui répond : “100 tonneaux d’huile.” Le serviteur lui dit : “Voici ton papier. Vite, assieds-toi et écris 50.” 7Ensuite le serviteur demande à un autre : “Et toi, tu dois combien ?” L’homme lui répond : “100 sacs de grains.” Le serviteur lui dit : “Voici ton papier. Écris 80.” 8Alors le maître dit du bien de ce serviteur malhonnête, parce qu’il a été habile. Les gens de ce monde sont plus habiles entre eux que ceux qui appartiennent à la lumière. »
Personne ne peut servir à la fois Dieu et l’argent
9Jésus ajoute : « Et moi, je vous dis : Faites-vous des amis avec l’argent trompeur ! Ainsi, quand l’argent n’existera plus, Dieu vous recevra dans sa maison pour toujours. 10Quand on peut faire confiance à quelqu’un pour une toute petite chose, on peut lui faire confiance aussi pour une grande. Et quand on est malhonnête pour une toute petite chose, on est malhonnête aussi pour une grande. 11C’est pourquoi, si on ne peut pas vous faire confiance pour l’argent trompeur, qui va vous confier les vraies richesses ? 12Et si on ne peut pas vous faire confiance pour les richesses qui ne sont pas à vous, qui va vous confier ce qui est à vous ?
13« Aucun serviteur ne peut servir deux maîtres. En effet, ou bien il détestera l’un et il aimera l’autre, ou bien il sera fidèle à l’un et il méprisera l’autre. Vous ne pouvez pas servir à la fois Dieu et l’argent. »
Quelques paroles de Jésus
14Les Pharisiens qui aiment l’argent entendent tout cela et ils se moquent de Jésus. 15Jésus leur dit : « Vous, vous faites croire aux gens que vous êtes justes. Mais Dieu connaît vos cœurs. Oui, ce qui paraît important pour les hommes, c’est une chose horrible pour Dieu.
16« Jusqu’à Jean-Baptiste, c’était le temps de la loi de Moïse et des prophètes. Mais depuis Jean-Baptiste, on annonce la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume de Dieu, et tous font des efforts pour entrer dans le Royaume. 17Pourtant, le ciel et la terre disparaîtront plus facilement qu’une seule petite lettre du texte de la loi.
18« Quand un homme renvoie sa femme et se marie avec une autre, il commet un adultère. Et quand un homme se marie avec une femme renvoyée, il commet un adultère. »
L’homme riche et Lazare
19Ensuite Jésus raconte cette histoire : « Il y a un homme riche qui s’habille avec des vêtements très beaux et très chers. Chaque jour, il fait une grande fête. 20Un pauvre, appelé Lazare, est couché devant la porte du riche. Il est couvert de plaies. 21Il a très envie de manger ce qui tombe de la table du riche. Mais ce sont plutôt les chiens qui viennent lécher ses plaies. 22Un jour, le pauvre meurt. Les anges l’emportent auprès d’Abraham. Le riche meurt aussi, et on l’enterre. 23Mais chez les morts, il souffre beaucoup. Alors il lève les yeux, et de loin, il voit Abraham et Lazare à côté de lui. 24Le riche se met à crier : “Abraham, mon père, aie pitié de moi ! Envoie Lazare, pour qu’il mette le bout de son doigt dans l’eau, et il me rafraîchira la langue. En effet, je souffre beaucoup dans ce feu.” 25Abraham lui répond : “Mon enfant, rappelle-toi : pendant ta vie, tu as reçu le bonheur, et Lazare, lui, a reçu le malheur. Maintenant, ici, il est consolé, et toi, tu souffres. 26De plus, entre vous et nous, il y a un très grand trou. Ainsi, ceux qui veulent aller d’ici chez vous ne peuvent pas le faire, et on ne peut pas non plus traverser le trou pour venir chez nous.” 27Le riche lui dit : “Père, je t’en prie, envoie donc Lazare dans la maison de mon père. 28En effet, j’ai cinq frères, Lazare ira les prévenir pour qu’ils ne viennent pas, eux aussi, dans ce lieu de souffrance.” 29Abraham lui répond : “Tes frères ont Moïse et les prophètes, ils doivent les écouter !” 30Le riche lui dit : “Abraham, mon père, cela ne suffit pas. Si quelqu’un de chez les morts vient les voir, ils changeront leur vie.” 31Mais Abraham lui dit : “Ils n’écoutent pas Moïse ni les prophètes. Alors, même si quelqu’un se lève de la mort, ils ne seront pas convaincus.” »

The Unjust Steward
1And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. 2And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. 3Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; to beg I am ashamed. 4I am resolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. 5So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and said unto the first, How much owest thou unto my lord? 6And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. 7Then said he to another, And how much owest thou? And he said, An hundred measures of wheat. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourscore. 8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. 9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own? 13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. 16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. 17And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. 18Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20and there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23and in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. 27Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. 31And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
