15
1And as soon as it was boker, the Rashei Hakohanim (the Chief Priests) with the Zekenim and Sofrim (Scribes) and [the] whole Sanhedrin, having performed the akedah (binding) of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, led [him] away and handed [him] over to Pilate.#15:1 Gn 22:9
2And Pilate questioned Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, Are you the Melech HaYehudim? And, in reply, he says, You say so.
3And the Rashei Hakohanim were accusing Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach [of] many things.
4And Pilate again questioned him, saying, Do you not answer anything? Look how many things they accuse you [of].
5But Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach no longer answered anything, so Pilate was astounded.#15:5 Isa 53:7
6Now [at] every Chag he was releasing to them one prisoner for whom they were making bakosha (request).
7Now there was the one being called Bar-Abba, who had been imprisoned with his fellow insurrectionists and who, at the time of the Mered (Revolt, Uprising), had committed retzach (murder).
8So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them just as in the past was his custom.
9But Pilate answered them, saying, Do you wish [that] I should release to you the Melech HaYehudim?
10For Pilate knew that because of kinah (envy) the Rashei Hakohanim had handed him over to him.
11But the Rashei Hakohanim incited the crowd that Pilate should instead release Bar-Abba to them.
12But Pilate, in reply again, was saying to them, What then do you wish [that] I should do with the one whom you call the Melech HaYehudim?
13And again they cried out, Let him be talui al HaEtz (being hanged on the Tree)!#15:13 Dt 21:23
14But Pilate was saying to them, Why? What ra'ah has he committed? But they all the more cried out, Let him be talui al HaEtz (being hanged on the Tree)!#15:14 Dt 21:23
15So Pilate, desiring to placate the crowd, released to them Bar-Abba, and handed over Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach to be scourged#15:15 with the flagellum and to be talui al HaEtz#15:15 Dt 21:23 (to be hanged on the Tree).
16And the chaiyalim (soldiers) led away Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach into the courtyard, which is [the] Praetorium, the governorʼs headquarters, and they called together [the] whole cohort.
17And they clothe him in [royal] purple and place upon him a keter (crown) of thorns that they had woven together.
18And they began to greet him, Hail, Melech HaYehudim!
19And they were striking him [on] the rosh with a staff and they were spitting on him and bending their knees and bowing down before him.#15:19 Ps 22:8,17
20After mocking him, they stripped him of [royal] purple and clothed him in his garments. And they lead him out that they might make him be talui al HaEtz (being hanged on the Tree).#15:20 Dt 21:23
21And a certain Shim'on from Cyrene was passing by, who was coming in from [the] countryside. He was the father of Alexander and Rufus. The chaiyalim (soldiers) requisition him in order that he carry Moshiachʼs Etz.#15:21 Dt 21:23; Isa 53:4-5
22And they bring Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach to a place called Gulgolta, which means, being translated, Place of the Skull.
23And they were giving to him yayin having been mixed with myrrh, but this one did not take it.#15:23 Ps 69:21 [22]; Prov 31:6
24And they hanged Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach on HaEtz and YICHALLEKU VEGADAI (they divide the garments) of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, and VAPPILU GORAL (they cast lots) for them, to decide what each might take.#15:24 Ps 22:18 [19]
25Now it was [the] third hour when they nailed and hanged Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach on HAETZ.#15:25 Dt 21:23
26And the inscription of the charge against him was inscribed above his rosh, Melech HaYehudim.
27And with him they also nailed, each to his own etz, shnei shodedim, one on [the] right, one on [the] left of him.
[28And the Kitvei Hakodesh was fulfilled, VES POSHEIM NIMNAH (and with lawless persons he was numbered).]
29And the ones passing by were reviling him and shaking their heads and saying, Ha! The one bringing churban on the Beis HaMikdash and rebuilding [it] in shlosha yamim,#15:29 Ps 22:7; 109:25
30Save yourself! Come down from the etz!
31Likewise, also, the Rashei Hakohanim with the Sofrim were also mocking him, saying, He saved others, but himself he is not able to save.#15:31 Ps 22:7
32Let the Moshiach, let Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach of Yisroel, let [him] come down now from the etz, in order that we may see and have emunah! And the ones having been hanged on the etz on either side of him were reproaching him.#15:32 Mk 8:31
33And when the sixth hour came,#15:33 high noon it became choshech over kol haaretz until [the] ninth hour.#15:33 Am 8:9
34And at the ninth hour, he cried out in a kol gadol (loud voice), Eloi, Eloi lamah sabachthani? — which means, being translated, ELI ELI LAMAH AZAVTANI? (My G-d, my G-d, why have you forsaken me?)#15:34 Ps 22:1
35And some of the ones having been standing nearby and having heard, were saying, Hinei! He calls for Eliyahu HaNavi!
36And someone having run and having filled a sponge with CHOMETZ#15:36 Ps 69:21 (vinegar), and having placed it on a staff, gave a drink to him, saying, Leave him alone. Let us see if Eliyahu Hanavi comes to take him down.
37And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach, having uttered a kol gadol (loud voice) and having breathed his last, expired.
38And the Parochet in the Heikhal was torn in two from top to bottom.
39And the centurion, having stood nearby opposite him, and having seen that he expired this way, said Beemes (actually, in truth), this man was the Ben HaElohim!
40And there were also nashim (women) looking on from a distance, among whom [were] Miryam from Magdala, and Miryam the Em of the younger Ya'akov and of Yosi, and Shlomit.#15:40 Ps 38:11
41They were with Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach in the Galil and they had been following him#15:41 as talmidat and serving him, and there were many other Jewish women who, with Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach, had made their aliyah leregel (pilgrimage) up to Yerushalayim.
42And already, erev (evening) fast approaching, vibahlt (since) it was Preparation Day, which is the day before Shabbos,
43Yosef of Ramatayim, a member of the Sanhedrin and a man of chashivut (prominence) there, a man who was also himself looking forward to the Malchut Hashem, had the bold chozek to go into Pilate and ask for the gufat Yehoshua.
44And Pilate was amazed that Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was already niftar (deceased), and Pilate summoned the centurion to question him whether Yehoshua was niftar already.
45And having found out from the centurion, he gave the geviyah (body) to Yosef.#15:45 Gn 47:18
46And having bought linen cloth tachrichim (shrouds) and having taken Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach down, he wrapped him in the tachrichim (shrouds) and placed him in a kever which had been cut from rock, and he rolled a stone against the entrance of the kever.
47And Miryam of Magdala and Miryam the Em of Yosi were observing#15:47 T.N. as chevra kadisha shomrim eye-witnesses of where Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach had been laid.

Pilate questions Jesus
(Matthew 27.1,2,11-14; Luke 23.1-5; John 18.28-38)
1Early the next morning the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses met together with the whole Jewish council. They tied up Jesus and led him off to Pilate.
2He asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Those are your words,” Jesus answered.
3The chief priests brought many charges against Jesus. 4Then Pilate questioned him again, “Don't you have anything to say? Don't you hear what crimes they say you have done?” 5But Jesus did not answer, and Pilate was amazed.
The death sentence
(Matthew 27.15-26; Luke 23.13-25; John 18.39—19.16)
6During Passover, Pilate always freed one prisoner chosen by the people. 7And at that time there was a prisoner named Barabbas. He and some others had been arrested for murder during a riot. 8The crowd now came and asked Pilate to set a prisoner free, just as he usually did.
9Pilate asked them, “Do you want me to free the king of the Jews?” 10Pilate knew that the chief priests had brought Jesus to him because they were jealous.
11But the chief priests told the crowd to ask Pilate to free Barabbas.
12Then Pilate asked the crowd, “What do you want me to do with this man you say is#15.12 this man you say is: These words are not in some manuscripts. the king of the Jews?”
13They yelled, “Nail him to a cross!”
14Pilate asked, “But what crime has he done?”
“Nail him to a cross!” they yelled even louder.
15Pilate wanted to please the crowd. So he set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross.
Soldiers make fun of Jesus
(Matthew 27.27-30; John 19.2,3)
16The soldiers led Jesus inside the courtyard of the fortress#15.16 fortress: The place where the Roman governor stayed. It was probably at Herod's palace west of Jerusalem, though it may have been Fortress Antonia, north of the temple, where the Roman troops were stationed. and called together the rest of the troops. 17They put a purple robe#15.17 purple robe: This was probably a Roman soldier's robe. on him, and on his head they placed a crown that they had made out of thorn branches. 18They made fun of Jesus and shouted, “Hey, you king of the Jews!” 19Then they beat him on the head with a stick. They spat on him and knelt down and pretended to worship him.
20When the soldiers had finished making fun of Jesus, they took off the purple robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a cross. 21Simon from Cyrene happened to be coming in from a farm, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross. Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.#Ro 16.13.
Jesus is nailed to a cross
(Matthew 27.31-44; Luke 23.27-43; John 19.17-27)
22The soldiers took Jesus to Golgotha, which means “Place of a Skull”.#15.22 Place of a Skull: The place was probably given this name because it was near a large rock in the shape of a human skull. 23There they gave him some wine mixed with a drug to ease the pain, but he refused to drink it.
24They nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes.#Ps 22.18. 25It was about nine o'clock in the morning when they nailed him to the cross. 26On it was a sign that told why he was nailed there. It read, “This is the King of the Jews.” 27-28The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses, one to the right of Jesus and the other to his left.#15.27-28 left: Some manuscripts add, “So the Scriptures came true which say, ‘He was accused of being a criminal.’ ”#Is 53.12.
29People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and shouted, “Ha! So you're the one who claimed you could tear down the temple and build it again in three days.#Ps 22.7; 109.25; Mk 14.58; Jn 2.19. 30Save yourself and come down from the cross!”
31The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses also made fun of Jesus. They said to each other, “He saved others, but he can't save himself. 32If he is the Messiah, the king of Israel, let him come down from the cross! Then we will see and believe.” The two criminals also said cruel things to Jesus.
The death of Jesus
(Matthew 27.45-56; Luke 23.44-49; John 19.28-30)
33About midday the sky turned dark and stayed that way until around three o'clock. 34Then about that time Jesus shouted, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?”#15.34 Eloi…sabachthani: These words are in Aramaic, a language spoken in Palestine during the time of Jesus. which means, “My God, my God, why have you deserted me?”#Ps 22.1.
35Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, “He is calling for Elijah.”#15.35 Elijah: The name “Elijah” sounds something like “Eloi”, which means “my God”. 36One of them ran and grabbed a sponge. After he had soaked it in wine, he put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus. He said, “Let's wait and see if Elijah will come#15.36 see if Elijah will come: See the note at 6.15. and take him down!”#Ps 69.21. 37Jesus shouted and then died.
38At once the curtain in the temple#15.38 curtain in the temple: There were two curtains in the temple. One was at the entrance, and the other separated the holy place from the most holy place that the Jewish people thought of as God's home on earth. The second curtain is probably the one which is meant. tore in two from top to bottom.#Ex 26.31-33.
39A Roman army officer was standing in front of Jesus. When the officer saw how Jesus died, he said, “This man really was the Son of God!”
40-41Some women were looking on from a distance. They had come with Jesus to Jerusalem. But even before this they had been his followers and had helped him while he was in Galilee. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joseph were two of these women. Salome was also one of them.#Lk 8.2,3.
Jesus is buried
(Matthew 27.57-61; Luke 23.50-56; John 19.38-42)
42It was now the evening before the Sabbath, and the Jewish people were getting ready for that sacred day. 43A man named Joseph from Arimathea was brave enough to ask Pilate for the body of Jesus. Joseph was a highly respected member of the Jewish council, and he was also waiting for God's kingdom to come.
44Pilate was surprised to hear that Jesus was already dead, and he called in the army officer to find out if Jesus had been dead very long. 45After the officer told him, Pilate let Joseph have Jesus' body.
46Joseph bought a linen cloth and took the body down from the cross. He had it wrapped in the cloth, and he put it in a tomb that had been cut into solid rock. Then he rolled a big stone against the entrance to the tomb.
47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph were watching and saw where the body was placed.
