Mattityahu (Mat) 8
8
1After Yeshua had come down from the hill, large crowds followed him. 2Then a man afflicted with tzara‘at came, kneeled down in front of him and said, “Sir, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3Yeshua reached out his hand, touched him and said, “I am willing! Be cleansed!” And at once he was cleansed from his tzara‘at. 4Then Yeshua said to him, “See that you tell no one; but as a testimony to the people, go and let the cohen examine you, and offer the sacrifice that Moshe commanded.”
5As Yeshua entered K’far-Nachum, a Roman army officer came up and pleaded for help. 6“Sir, my orderly is lying at home paralyzed and suffering terribly!” 7Yeshua said, “I will go and heal him.” 8But the officer answered, “Sir, I am unfit to have you come into my home. Rather, if you will only give the command, my orderly will recover. 9For I too am a man under authority. I have soldiers under me, and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10On hearing this Yeshua was amazed and said to the people following him, “Yes! I tell you, I have not found anyone in Isra’el with such trust! 11Moreover, I tell you that many will come from the east and from the west to take their places at the feast in the Kingdom of Heaven with Avraham, Yitz’chak and Ya‘akov. 12But those born for the Kingdom will be thrown outside in the dark, where people will wail and grind their teeth!” 13Then Yeshua said to the officer, “Go; let it be for you as you have trusted.” And his orderly was healed at that very moment.
14Yeshua went to Kefa’s home and there saw Kefa’s mother-in-law sick in bed with a fever. 15He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she got up and began helping him.
16When evening came, many people held in the power of demons were brought to him. He expelled the spirits with a word and healed all who were ill. 17This was done to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Yesha‘yahu,
“He himself took our weaknesses
and bore our diseases”
18When Yeshua saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19A Torah-teacher approached and said to him, “Rabbi, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20Yeshua said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds flying about have nests, but the Son of Man has no home of his own.” 21Another of the talmidim said to him, “Sir, first let me go and bury my father.” 22But Yeshua replied, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
23He boarded the boat, and his talmidim followed. 24Then, without warning, a furious storm arose on the lake, so that waves were sweeping over the boat. But Yeshua was sleeping. 25So they came and roused him, saying, “Sir! Help! We’re about to die!” 26He said to them, “Why are you afraid? So little trust you have!” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and there was a dead calm. 27The men were astounded. They asked, “What kind of man is this, that even the winds and sea obey him?”
28When Yeshua arrived at the other side of the lake, in the Gadarenes’ territory, there came out of the burial caves two men controlled by demons, so violent that no one dared travel on that road. 29They screamed, “What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” 30Now some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31The demons begged him, “If you are going to drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32“All right, go!” he told them. So they came out and went into the pigs, whereupon the entire herd rushed down the hillside into the lake and drowned. 33The swineherds fled, went off to the town and told the whole story, including what had happened to the demonized men. 34At this, the whole town came out to meet Yeshua. When they saw him, they begged him to leave their district.

Jesus Heals a Sick Man
(Mk. 1:40–45; Lk. 5:12–16)
1Jesus came down from the hill, and a large crowd followed him. 2Then a man sick with leprosy came to him. The man bowed down before Jesus and said, “Lord, you have the power to heal me if you want.”
3Jesus touched the man. He said, “I want to heal you. Be healed!” Immediately the man was healed from his leprosy. 4Then Jesus said to him, “Don’t tell anyone about what happened. But go and let the priest look at you.#8:4 let the priest look at you The Law of Moses said a priest must decide when a person with leprosy was well. And offer the gift that Moses commanded for people who are made well. This will show everyone that you are healed.”
Jesus Heals an Officer’s Servant
(Lk. 7:1–10; Jn. 4:43–54)
5Jesus went to the city of Capernaum. When he entered the city, an army officer came to him and begged for help. 6The officer said, “Lord, my servant is very sick at home in bed. He can’t move his body and has much pain.”
7Jesus said to the officer, “I will go and heal him.”
8The officer answered, “Lord, I am not good enough for you to come into my house. You need only to give the order, and my servant will be healed. 9I know this, because I understand authority. There are people who have authority over me, and I have soldiers under my authority. I tell one soldier, ‘Go,’ and he goes. I tell another soldier, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and my servant obeys me.”
10When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. He said to those who were with him, “The truth is, this man has more faith than anyone I have found, even in Israel. 11Many people will come from the east and from the west. These people will sit and eat with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in God’s kingdom. 12And those who should have the kingdom will be thrown out. They will be thrown outside into the darkness, where people will cry and grind their teeth with pain.”
13Then Jesus said to the officer, “Go home. Your servant will be healed the way you believed he would.” Right then his servant was healed.
Jesus Heals Many People
(Mk. 1:29–34; Lk. 4:38–41)
14Jesus went to Peter’s house. He saw that Peter’s mother-in-law was in bed with a high fever. 15He touched her hand, and the fever left her. Then she stood up and began to serve him.
16That evening people brought to Jesus many people who had demons inside them. He spoke and the demons left the people. He healed all those who were sick. 17So Jesus made clear the full meaning of what Isaiah the prophet said:
“He took away our diseases
and carried away our sicknesses.” Isaiah 53:4
Following Jesus
(Lk. 9:57–62)
18When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he told his followers to go to the other side of the lake. 19Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, “Teacher, I will follow you any place you go.”
20Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes to live in. The birds have nests. But the Son of Man has no place to rest.”
21Another of Jesus’ followers said to him, “Lord, I will follow you too, but let me go and bury my father first.”
22But Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and let those who are dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus’ Followers See His Power
(Mk. 4:35–41; Lk. 8:22–25)
23Jesus got into a boat, and his followers went with him. 24After the boat left the shore, a very bad storm began on the lake. The waves covered the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25The followers went to him and woke him. They said, “Lord, save us! We will drown!”
26Jesus answered, “Why are you afraid? You don’t have enough faith.” Then he stood up and gave a command to the wind and the water. The wind stopped, and the lake became very calm.
27The men were amazed. They said, “What kind of man is this? Even the wind and the water obey him!”
Jesus Sends Demons Out of Two Men
(Mk. 5:1–20; Lk. 8:26–39)
28Jesus arrived at the other side of the lake in the country of the Gadarene#8:28 Gadarene From Gadara, an area southeast of Lake Galilee. people. There, two men who had demons inside them came to him. They lived in the burial caves and were so dangerous that no one could use the road by those caves. 29They came to Jesus and shouted, “What do you want with us, Son of God? Did you come here to punish us before the right time?”
30Near that place there was a large herd of pigs feeding. 31The demons begged Jesus, “If you make us leave these men, please send us into that herd of pigs.”
32Jesus said to them, “Go!” So the demons left the men and went into the pigs. Then the whole herd of pigs ran down the hill into the lake, and all were drowned. 33The men who had the work of caring for the pigs ran away. They went into town and told the people everything that happened, especially about the men who had the demons. 34Then the whole town went out to see Jesus. When the people saw him, they begged him to leave their area.
