Yochanan (Jhn) 1
1
1In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2He was with God in the beginning.
3All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing made had being.
4In him was life,
and the life was the light of mankind.
5The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not suppressed it.
6There was a man sent from God whose name was Yochanan. 7He came to be a testimony, to bear witness concerning the light; so that through him, everyone might put his trust in God and be faithful to him. 8He himself was not that light; no, he came to bear witness concerning the light.
9This was the true light,
which gives light to everyone entering the world.
10He was in the world — the world came to be through him —
yet the world did not know him.
11He came to his own homeland,
yet his own people did not receive him.
12But to as many as did receive him, to those who put their trust in his person and power, he gave the right to become children of God, 13not because of bloodline, physical impulse or human intention, but because of God.
14The Word became a human being and lived with us,
and we saw his Sh’khinah,
the Sh’khinah of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.
15Yochanan witnessed concerning him when he cried out, “This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘The one coming after me has come to rank ahead of me, because he existed before me.’”
16We have all received from his fullness,
yes, grace upon grace.
17For the Torah was given through Moshe;
grace and truth came through Yeshua the Messiah.
18No one has ever seen God; but the only and unique Son, who is identical with God and is at the Father’s side — he has made him known.
19Here is Yochanan’s testimony: when the Judeans sent cohanim and L’vi’im from Yerushalayim to ask him, “Who are you?” 20he was very straightforward and stated clearly, “I am not the Messiah.” 21“Then who are you?” they asked him. “Are you Eliyahu?” “No, I am not,” he said. “Are you ‘the prophet,’ the one we’re expecting?” “No,” he replied. 22So they said to him, “Who are you? — so that we can give an answer to the people who sent us. What do you have to say about yourself?” 23He answered in the words of Yesha‘yahu the prophet, “I am
The voice of someone crying out:
‘In the desert make the way of Adonai straight!’”
24Some of those who had been sent were P’rushim. 25They asked him, “If you are neither the Messiah nor Eliyahu nor ‘the prophet,’ then why are you immersing people?” 26To them Yochanan replied, “I am immersing people in water, but among you is standing someone whom you don’t know. 27He is the one coming after me — I’m not good enough even to untie his sandal!” 28All this took place in Beit-Anyah, east of the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing.
29The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world! 30This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.’ 31I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra’el.” 32Then Yochanan gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him. 33I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’ 34And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
35The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim. 36On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, “Look! God’s lamb!” 37His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua. 38Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher!”) “Where are you staying?” 39He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day — it was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40One of the two who had heard Yochanan and had followed Yeshua was Andrew the brother of Shim‘on Kefa.
41The first thing he did was to find his brother Shim‘on and tell him, “We’ve found the Mashiach!” (The word means “one who has been anointed.”) 42He took him to Yeshua. Looking at him, Yeshua said, “You are Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan; you will be known as Kefa.” (The name means “rock.”)
43The next day, having decided to leave for the Galil, Yeshua found Philip and said, “Follow me!” 44Philip was from Beit-Tzaidah, the town where Andrew and Kefa lived. 45Philip found Natan’el and told him, “We’ve found the one that Moshe wrote about in the Torah, also the Prophets — it’s Yeshua Ben-Yosef from Natzeret!” 46Natan’el answered him, “Natzeret? Can anything good come from there?” “Come and see,” Philip said to him. 47Yeshua saw Natan’el coming toward him and remarked about him, “Here’s a true son of Isra’el — nothing false in him!” 48Natan’el said to him, “How do you know me?” Yeshua answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49Natan’el said, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Isra’el!” 50Yeshua answered him, “you believe all this just because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that!” 51Then he said to him, “Yes indeed! I tell you that you will see heaven opened and the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man!”

Without him, nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome#1:5 The word translated “overcome” (κατέλαβεν) can also be translated “comprehended.” It refers to getting a grip on an enemy to defeat him. it.
6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was Yochanan. 7The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. 9The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognise him. 11He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. 12But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: 13who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
14 The Word became flesh and lived amongst us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born#1:14 The phrase “only born” is from the Greek word “μονογενους”, which is sometimes translated “only begotten” or “one and only”. Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15Yochanan testified about him. He cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me, for he was before me.’” 16From his fullness we all received grace upon grace. 17For the Torah was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realised through Yeshua the Messiah.#1:17 “Messiah” means “Anointed One”. 18No one has seen God at any time. The only born#1:18 The phrase “only born” is from the Greek word “μονογενη”, which is sometimes translated “only begotten” or “one and only”. Son,#1:18 NU reads “God” who is in the bosom of the Father, has declared him.
19 This is Yochanan’s testimony, when the Judeans sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”
20 He declared, and didn’t deny, but he declared, “I am not the Messiah.”
21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the prophet?”
He answered, “No.”
22 They said therefore to him, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”
23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’#Isaiah 40:3 as Isaiah the prophet said.”
24 The ones who had been sent were from the Pharisees. 25They asked him, “Why then do you immerse if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26Yochanan answered them, “I immerse in water, but amongst you stands one whom you don’t know. 27He is the one who comes after me, who is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to loosen.” 28These things were done in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where Yochanan was immersing.
29 The next day, he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold,#1:29 “Behold”, from “ἰδοὺ”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection. the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.’ 31I didn’t know him, but for this reason I came immersing in water, that he would be revealed to Israel.” 32Yochanan testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove out of heaven, and it remained on him. 33I didn’t recognise him, but he who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘On whomever you will see the Spirit descending and remaining on him is he who immerses in the Holy Spirit.’ 34I have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”
35 Again, the next day, Yochanan was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Yeshua as he walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Yeshua. 38Yeshua turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you looking for?”
They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?”
39 He said to them, “Come and see.”
They came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.#1:39 4:00 p.m. 40One of the two who heard Yochanan and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is, being interpreted, Anointed One#1:41 “Messiah” (Hebrew) and “Christ” (Greek) both mean “Anointed One”.). 42He brought him to Yeshua. Yeshua looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Kefa” (which is by interpretation, Peter).#1:42 “Kefa” (Aramaic) and “Peter” (Greek) both mean “Rock”.
43 On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Yeshua said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Torah and also the prophets, wrote: Yeshua of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
46 Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
47Yeshua saw Nathanael coming to him, and said about him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!”
48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Yeshua answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.”
49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are King of Israel!”
50Yeshua answered him, “Because I told you, ‘I saw you underneath the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these!” 51He said to him, “Most certainly, I tell you all, hereafter you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
