1Elisha the prophet summoned one of the guild prophets and said to him, “Prepare for traveling, take this flask of oil in your hand and go to Ramot-Gil‘ad. 2When you get there, look for Yehu the son of Y’hoshafat, the son of Nimshi. Enter, have him step away from his companions, and take him to an inside room. 3Then take the flask of oil, pour it on his head, and say, ‘This is what Adonai says: “I have anointed you king over Isra’el.”’ After that, open the door; and get away from there as fast as you can.”

4So the young prophet left for Ramot-Gil‘ad. 5When he arrived, he found the senior army officers sitting there. He said, “I have a message for you, commander.” Yehu asked, “For which one of us?” “For you, commander,” he said. 6Yehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on his head and said to him, “This is what Adonai the God of Isra’el says: ‘I have anointed you king over the people of Adonai, over Isra’el. 7You will attack the house of Ach’av your master, so that I can avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and of all the servants of Adonai, blood shed by Izevel. 8The entire house of Ach’av will perish; I will cut off from Ach’av every male, whether a slave or free in Isra’el. 9I will make the house of Ach’av like the house of Yarov‘am the son of N’vat and like the house of Ba‘sha the son of Achiyah. 10Moreover, the dogs will eat Izevel in the dumping-ground of Yizre‘el, and there will be no one to bury her.’” Then he opened the door and fled.

11Yehu returned to the servants of his lord, and one of them said to him, “Is everything all right? Why did this meshugga come to you?” He answered them, “You know the kind and how they babble.” 12They said, “You’re being evasive. Come on, tell us the truth.” Then he said, “This is exactly what he said to me and how he said it: ‘Here is what Adonai says: “I have anointed you king over Isra’el.”’” 13At this, they hurried each one to take his cloak and put it under Yehu at the top of the stairs. Then they blew the shofar and proclaimed, “Yehu is king!”

14Yehu the son of Y’hoshafat, the son of Nimshi, formed a conspiracy against Yoram. (At the time, Yoram was guarding Ramot-Gil‘ad, he and all Isra’el, because of Haza’el king of Aram; 15but Yoram himself had returned to Yizre‘el to recover from the wounds Aram had inflicted on him when fighting Haza’el king of Aram.) “If you agree,” said Yehu, “then don’t allow anyone to leave town and take the news to Yizre‘el.” 16So Yehu, riding in a chariot, went to Yizre‘el, for Yoram was laid up there. Achazyah king of Y’hudah had come down to visit Yoram.

17The lookout standing on the watchtower in Yizre‘el saw Yehu’s troops approaching and said, “I see some troops coming.” Yoram said, “Have a horseman go to meet him and ask, “Are you coming in peace?” 18So a man on horseback went to meet him and said, “The king asks if you are coming in peace.” Yehu answered, “Peace? What business is that of yours? Turn around, and get behind me!” The watchman reported, “The messenger reached them, but he isn’t coming back.” 19So he sent out a second man on horseback, who, on coming to him, said, “The king asks if you are coming in peace.” Yehu answered, “Peace? What business is that of yours? Turn around, and get behind me!” 20The watchman reported, “He reached them, but he isn’t coming back. Also, it looks like the driving of Yehu Nimshi’s [grand]son — he’s driving like a maniac!” 21“Harness my chariot!” ordered Yoram. They got it ready. Then Yoram king of Isra’el and Achazyah king of Y’hudah, each in his chariot, went out to meet Yehu. They met him in the field of Navot the Yizre‘eli.

22When Yoram saw Yehu he said, “Are you coming in peace, Yehu?” He answered, “Peace? With your mother Izevel continuing all her cult prostitution and witchcraft? What a question!” 23Yoram wheeled around and fled, shouting, “Treachery, Achazyah!” 24Yehu drew his bow with all his strength and struck Yoram between the shoulder-blades; the arrow went through his heart, and he collapsed in his chariot. 25“Pick him up,” said Yehu to Bidkar his servant, “and throw him into the field of Navot the Yizre‘eli; for remember how, when you and I were riding together after Ach’av his father, Adonai pronounced this sentence against him: 26‘Adonai says: “Yesterday I saw the blood of Navot and the blood of his sons.” Adonai also says: “I will pay you back in this field.”’ Therefore, pick him up; and throw him into the field, in keeping with what Adonai said.”

27But when Achazyah the king of Y’hudah saw this, he fled on the road past Beit-HaGan. Yehu pursued him and ordered, “Strike him too in his chariot!” [So they struck him] at the Gur ascent, near Yivle‘am. He fled to Megiddo, but there he died. 28His servants carried him in a chariot to Yerushalayim and buried him in his tomb with his ancestors in the City of David.

29It was in the eleventh year of Yoram the son of Ach’av that Achazyah had begun his rule over Y’hudah.

30When Yehu reached Yizre‘el, and Izevel heard of it, she put on eye make-up, fixed her hair and looked out the window. 31As Yehu came through the city gate, she asked, “Are you here in peace, you Zimri, you murderer of your master?” 32Looking up at the window he said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three officers looked out toward him. 33He said, “Throw her down!” So they threw her down. Some of her blood splashed onto the wall and the horses, and she was trampled underfoot. 34He went in, ate and drank, and then said, “Deal with this accursed woman — bury her, because she’s a king’s daughter.” 35They went to bury her but found no more of her than her skull, feet and hands. 36So they came back and told him. He said, “This is what Adonai said through his servant Eliyahu from Tishbe: ‘In the field of Yizre‘el the dogs will eat the flesh of Izevel; 37Izevel’s corpse in the field of Yizre‘el will be like dung on the ground, unrecognizable as Izevel.’”

예후가 이스라엘의 왕이 되다

1예언자 엘리사가 #히, ‘예언자들의 아들들’예언자 수련생들 가운데서 한 사람을 불러 말하였다. “너는 허리를 단단히 묶고, 손에 이 기름병을 들고, 길르앗의 라못으로 가거라. 2거기에 가면, 그 곳에서 님시의 손자이며 여호사밧의 아들인 예후를 만나게 될 것이다. 그러면 안에 들어가, 그의 동료들 사이에서 그를 불러내어 밀실로 데리고 들어가거라. 3그리고 기름병을 기울여 그의 머리에 부으며 ‘나 주가 말한다. 내가 너를 이스라엘의 왕으로 세웠다’ 하고 말하여라. 그렇게 말한 다음에 너는 문을 열고 속히 도망하여라. 지체해서는 안 된다.”

4그리하여 예언자의 시종인 그 젊은이가 길르앗의 라못으로 갔다. 5그가 도착하였을 때에, 그 곳에는 군대의 장군들이 둘러앉아 회의를 하고 있었다. 그가 그들에게 말하였다. “장군님! 드릴 말씀이 있습니다.” 그러자 예후가 말하였다. “우리들 가운데 누구에게 말하고 있는 겁니까?” 그 시종이 말하였다. “바로 장군님께 말씀을 드리고 있습니다.” 6예후가 일어나서 집 안으로 들어가자, 예언자의 시종인 그 젊은이는 그의 머리에 기름을 부으며 말하였다. “나 주 이스라엘의 하나님이 말한다. 내가 너에게 기름을 부어, 주님의 백성 이스라엘의 왕으로 세웠다. 7너는 네가 섬기는 상전 아합의 가문을 쳐라. 나는 내 종들인 예언자들의 피와 또 주님의 다른 종들의 모든 피를 이세벨에게 갚으려고 한다. 8나는 아합의 가문을 모두 다 멸망시킬 것이다. 그렇다. 아합에게 속한 사람은 매인 사람이건 놓인 사람이건 가릴 것 없이, 남자는 누구나 이스라엘 안에서 끊어 버릴 것이다. 9나는 아합의 가문을 느밧의 아들 여로보암의 가문과 같이 만들고, 아히야의 아들 바아사의 가문과 같이 만들 것이다. 10그리고 개들이 이스르엘 땅 안에서 이세벨을 뜯어 먹을 것이다. 그를 매장할 사람조차 없을 것이다.” 그리고 난 뒤에 예언자의 시종인 그 젊은이는 문을 열고 도망하였다.

11 예후가 왕의 신하들이 있는 데로 나오자, 한 사람이 그에게 물었다. “좋은 소식이었소? 그 미친 녀석이 장군께는 무슨 일로 왔었소?” 예후가 그들에게 말하였다. “장군들께서도 그 사람이 누구고, 그가 쓸데없이 떠들고 간 말이 무엇인지 짐작하고 있을 것이라 믿소.” 12그러나 그들이 말하였다. “슬쩍 넘어가지 마시오. 우리에게 사실을 말해 주시오.” 예후가 대답하였다. “그의 말이, 주님께서 나를 이스라엘의 왕으로 기름 부어 세웠다고 말씀하시었다고 하였소.” 13그러자 그들은 황급히 일어나, 각자 자기의 옷을 벗어서, 섬돌 위 예후의 발 아래에 깔고, 나팔을 불며 “예후께서 임금님이 되셨다” 하고 외쳤다.

이스라엘 왕 요람이 살해되다

14그리하여 님시의 손자이며 여호사밧의 아들인 예후는, 요람을 칠 모의를 하게 되었다. 그 때에 요람은 이스라엘 전군을 이끌고, 시리아 왕 하사엘과 맞서서 길르앗의 라못을 지키고 있었다. 15요람 왕이 시리아 왕 하사엘과 싸울 때, 시리아 사람에게 다친 상처를 치료하려고 이스르엘로 돌아와 있을 때였다. 마침내 예후가 말하였다. “장군들이 나와 뜻을 같이 한다면, 아무도 이 성읍을 빠져 나가서, 이스르엘에 이 사실을 알리는 일이 없도록 해주시오.” 16그런 다음에 예후는, 병거를 타고 이스르엘로 갔다. 요람이 그 곳에서 병으로 누워 있었다. 유다의 아하시야 왕은 요람을 문병하려고 벌써 거기에 와 있었다.

17 이스르엘의 망대 위에 서 있는 파수병이, 예후의 군대가 오는 것을 보고 “웬 군대가 오고 있습니다” 하고 외쳤다. 그러자 요람이 말하였다. “기마병을 보내어 그들을 만나, 평화의 소식이냐고 물어 보아라.”

18그리하여 기마병은 그들을 만나러 가서 말하였다. “임금님께서 평화의 소식이냐고 물어 보라 하셨소.” 그러자 예후가 말하였다. “평화의 소식인지 아닌지가 너와 무슨 상관이 있느냐? 너는 내 뒤를 따르라.” 파수병이 왕에게 보고하였다. “그들에게 간 전령이 돌아오지 않습니다.” 19그리하여 왕이 두 번째 기마병을 보내자, 그가 그들에게 가서 말하였다. “임금님께서 평화의 소식이냐고 물어 보라 하셨소.” 그러자 예후가 말하였다. “평화의 소식인지 아닌지가 너와 무슨 상관이 있느냐? 너는 내 뒤를 따르라.”

20파수병이 왕에게 또 보고하였다. “그들에게 간 전령이 또 돌아오지 않습니다. 그런데 미친 듯이 말을 모는 모습이, 님시의 아들 예후와 비슷합니다.”

21이 말을 듣자, 요람은 “병거를 준비하라!” 하고 명령하였다. 병거를 준비하니, 이스라엘 왕 요람과 유다 왕 아하시야가 각각 자기의 병거를 타고 예후를 만나러 나가서, 이스르엘 사람 나봇의 땅에서 그를 만났다. 22요람이 예후를 보고 “예후 장군, 평화의 소식이오?” 하고 물었다. 예후는 “당신의 어머니 이세벨이 저지른 음행과 마술 행위가 극에 달하였는데, 무슨 평화가 있겠소?” 하고 대답하였다.

23 요람이 그의 손에 쥔 말고삐를 급히 돌려 도망하면서, 아하시야에게 소리쳤다. “아하시야 임금님, 반역이오.” 24예후가 힘껏 활을 당겨 요람의 등을 겨누어 쏘자, 화살이 그의 가슴을 꿰뚫고 나갔다. 그는 병거 바닥에 엎드러졌다. 25예후가 요람의 빗갈 시종무관에게 말하였다. “그 주검을 들고 가서, 이스르엘 사람 나봇의 밭에 던지시오. 당신은, 나와 당신이 그의 아버지 아합의 뒤에서 나란히 병거를 타고 다닐 때에, 주님께서 그를 두고 선포하신 말씀을 그대로 기억할 것이오. 26주님께서 아합에게 ‘내가 어제, 나봇과 그의 아들들이 함께 흘린 피를 분명히 보았다. 바로 이 밭에서 내가 너에게 그대로 갚겠다. 이것은 나 주의 말이다’ 하고 말씀하셨소. 이제 당신은 그 주검을 들고 가서, 주님의 말씀대로 그 밭에 던지시오.”

유다 왕 아하시야가 살해되다

27 유다의 아하시야 왕은 이것을 보고 #‘정원의 집’벳하간으로 가는 길로 도망하였으나, 예후가 그의 뒤를 추적하며 “저 자도 죽여라” 하고 외치니, 이블르암 부근 구르 오르막길에서 예후의 부하들이, 병거에 타고 있는 아하시야를 찔러 상처를 입혔다. 그는 므깃도까지 도망하여, 그 곳에서 죽었다. 28그의 부하들이 그를 병거에 실어 예루살렘으로 운반하고, 그를 ‘다윗 성’에 있는 그의 조상들의 묘지에 함께 장사지냈다.

29 아합의 아들 요람 왕 제 십일년에 아하시야가 유다를 다스리는 왕이 되었다.

이세벨 왕후가 살해되다

30 예후가 이스르엘에 이르렀을 때에, 이세벨이 이 소식을 듣고, 눈 화장을 하고 머리를 아름답게 꾸미고는, 창문으로 내려다보았다. 31예후가 문 안으로 들어오자, 이세벨이 소리쳤다. “제 주인을 살해한 시므리 같은 자야, 그게 평화냐?”

32 예후가 얼굴을 들어 창문을 쳐다보며 소리쳤다. “내 편이 될 사람이 누구냐? 누가 내 편이냐?” 그러자 두세 명의 내관이 그를 내려다보았다. 33예후가 그들에게 명령하였다. “그 여자를 아래로 내던져라.” 그들이 그 여자를 아래로 내던지니, 피가 벽과 말에게까지 튀었다. 예후가 탄 말이 그 여자의 주검을 밟고 지나갔다. 34예후가 궁으로 들어가서, 먹고 마시다가 말하였다. “이제 저 저주받은 여자를 찾아다가 장사를 지내 주어라. 그래도 그 여자는 왕의 딸이었다.” 35그들이 그 여자를 장사지내 주려고 찾아 나섰으나, 그 여자의 해골과 손발밖에는 아무것도 발견할 수가 없었다. 36그들이 돌아와서 그에게 그렇게 보고하니, 그가 말하였다. “주님께서, 주님의 종 디셉 사람 엘리야를 시켜서 말씀하신 대로, 이루어졌다. 주님께서 말씀하시기를 ‘이스르엘의 밭에서 개들이 이세벨의 주검을 뜯어 먹을 것이며, 37이세벨의 주검은 이스르엘에 있는 밭의 거름처럼 될 것이므로, 이것을 보고 이세벨이라고 부를 사람은 아무도 없을 것이다’ 하셨는데, 그대로 되었다.”
