Job 1
1
1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God,#1:1 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim). and turned away from evil. 2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. 4His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. 5It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.
6 Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before the LORD,#1:6 When rendered in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, “Lord” or “GOD” is the translation of God’s Proper Name. Satan also came among them. 7The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?”
Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”
8 The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.”
12 The LORD said to Satan, “Behold,#1:12 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection. all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.”
So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD. 13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 14that a messenger came to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Kasdim made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”
18 While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house, 19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.”
20 Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. 21He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away. Blessed be the LORD’s name.” 22In all this, Job didn’t sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.

Job 1

Job loses his wealth, family, and health
Job and his family
1Many years ago, a man named Job lived in the land of Uz.#1.1 Uz: The exact location of this place is unknown, though it was possibly somewhere in north-west Arabia. He was a truly good person, who respected God and refused to do evil.
2Job had seven sons and three daughters. 3He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred pair of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and a large number of servants. He was the richest person in the East.
4Job's sons took turns having feasts in their homes, and they always invited their three sisters to join in the eating and drinking. 5After each feast, Job would send for his children and perform a ceremony, as a way of asking God to forgive them for any wrongs they might have done. He would get up early the next morning and offer a sacrifice for each of them, just in case they had sinned or silently cursed God.
Angels, the LORD, and Satan
6One day, when the angels#1.6 angels: See the note at 15.8. had gathered around the LORD, and Satan#1.6 Satan: Hebrew “the accuser”. was there with them,#Gn 6.2. 7the LORD asked, “Satan, where have you been?”
Satan replied, “I have been going all over the earth.”
8Then the LORD asked, “What do you think of my servant Job? No one on earth is like him—he is a truly good person, who respects me and refuses to do evil.”
9“Why shouldn't he respect you?” Satan remarked.#Rev 12.10. 10“You are like a wall protecting not only him, but his entire family and all his property. You make him successful in whatever he does, and his flocks and herds are everywhere. 11Try taking away everything he owns, and he will curse you to your face.”
12The LORD replied, “All right, Satan, do what you want with anything that belongs to him, but don't harm Job.”
Then Satan left.
Job loses everything
13Job's sons and daughters were having a feast in the home of his eldest son, 14when someone rushed up to Job and said, “While your servants were ploughing with your oxen, and your donkeys were nearby eating grass, 15a gang of Sabeans#1.15 Sabeans: Perhaps the people of Sheba in what is now south-west Arabia (see Isaiah 60.6). attacked and stole the oxen and donkeys! Your other servants were killed, and I was the only one who escaped to tell you.”
16That servant was still speaking, when a second one came running up and saying, “God sent down a fire that killed your sheep and your servants. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
17Before that servant finished speaking, a third one raced up and said, “Three gangs of Chaldeans#1.17 Chaldeans: People from the region of Babylonia, north-east of Palestine. attacked and stole your camels! All your other servants were killed, and I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
18That servant was still speaking, when a fourth one dashed up and said, “Your children were having a feast and drinking wine at the home of your eldest son, 19when suddenly a storm from the desert blew the house down, crushing all your children. I am the only one who escaped to tell you.”
20When Job heard this, he tore his clothes and shaved his head because of his great sorrow. He knelt on the ground, then worshipped God 21and said:
“We bring nothing at birth;
we take nothing
with us at death.
The LORD alone gives and takes.
Praise the name of the LORD!”
22In spite of everything, Job did not sin or accuse God of doing wrong.
