Psalms 107
107
BOOK 5
1 Give thanks to the LORD,#107:1 When rendered in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, “Lord” or “GOD” is the translation of God’s Proper Name (Hebrew “יהוה”, usually pronounced Yahweh). for he is good,
for his loving kindness endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed by the LORD say so,
whom he has redeemed from the hand of the adversary,
3 and gathered out of the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.
4 They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way.
They found no city to live in.
5 Hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted in them.
6 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them out of their distresses.
7 He led them also by a straight way,
that they might go to a city to live in.
8Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
9 For he satisfies the longing soul.
He fills the hungry soul with good.
10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death,
being bound in affliction and iron,
11 because they rebelled against the words of God,#107:11 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).
and condemned the counsel of the Most High.
12Therefore he brought down their heart with labour.
They fell down, and there was no one to help.
13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
and broke away their chains.
15Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
16 For he has broken the gates of bronze,
and cut through bars of iron.
17Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience,
and because of their iniquities.
18 Their soul abhors all kinds of food.
They draw near to the gates of death.
19 Then they cry to the LORD in their trouble,
and he saves them out of their distresses.
20 He sends his word, and heals them,
and delivers them from their graves.
21Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds to the children of men!
22Let them offer the sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and declare his deeds with singing.
23 Those who go down to the sea in ships,
who do business in great waters,
24 these see the LORD’s deeds,
and his wonders in the deep.
25 For he commands, and raises the stormy wind,
which lifts up its waves.
26 They mount up to the sky; they go down again to the depths.
Their soul melts away because of trouble.
27 They reel back and forth, and stagger like a drunken man,
and are at their wits’ end.
28 Then they cry to the LORD in their trouble,
and he brings them out of their distress.
29He makes the storm a calm,
so that its waves are still.
30 Then they are glad because it is calm,
so he brings them to their desired haven.
31Let them praise the LORD for his loving kindness,
for his wonderful deeds for the children of men!
32Let them exalt him also in the assembly of the people,
and praise him in the seat of the elders.
33 He turns rivers into a desert,
water springs into a thirsty ground,
34 and a fruitful land into a salt waste,
for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.
35 He turns a desert into a pool of water,
and a dry land into water springs.
36 There he makes the hungry live,
that they may prepare a city to live in,
37 sow fields, plant vineyards,
and reap the fruits of increase.
38 He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly.
He doesn’t allow their livestock to decrease.
39Again, they are diminished and bowed down
through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.
40 He pours contempt on princes,
and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.
41Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction,
and increases their families like a flock.
42 The upright will see it, and be glad.
All the wicked will shut their mouths.
43 Whoever is wise will pay attention to these things.
They will consider the loving kindnesses of the LORD.

Psalms 107—150
In Praise of God's Goodness
1 #
1 Chr 16.34; 2 Chr 5.13; 7.3; Ezra 3.11; Ps 100.5; 106.1; 118.1; 136.1; Jer 33.11 “Give thanks to the LORD, because he is good;
his love is eternal!”
2Repeat these words in praise to the LORD,
all you whom he has saved.
He has rescued you from your enemies
3and has brought you back from foreign countries,
from east and west, from north and south.#107.3 Probable text south; Hebrew the Mediterranean Sea (meaning “west”).
4Some wandered in the trackless desert
and could not find their way to a city to live in.
5They were hungry and thirsty
and had given up all hope.
6Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
7He led them by a straight road
to a city where they could live.
8They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
9He satisfies those who are thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
10Some were living in gloom and darkness,
prisoners suffering in chains,
11because they had rebelled against the commands of Almighty God
and had rejected his instructions.
12They were worn out from hard work;
they would fall down, and no one would help.
13Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
14He brought them out of their gloom and darkness
and broke their chains in pieces.
15They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
16He breaks down doors of bronze
and smashes iron bars.
17Some were fools, suffering because of their sins
and because of their evil;
18they couldn't stand the sight of food
and were close to death.
19Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
20He healed them with his command
and saved them from the grave.
21They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
22They must thank him with sacrifices,
and with songs of joy must tell all that he has done.
23Some sailed over the ocean in ships,
earning their living on the seas.
24They saw what the LORD can do,
his wonderful acts on the seas.
25He commanded, and a mighty wind began to blow
and stirred up the waves.
26The ships were lifted high in the air
and plunged down into the depths.
In such danger the sailors lost their courage;
27they stumbled and staggered like drunken men —
all their skill was useless.
28Then in their trouble they called to the LORD,
and he saved them from their distress.
29He calmed the raging storm,
and the waves became quiet.
30They were glad because of the calm,
and he brought them safe to the port they wanted.
31They must thank the LORD for his constant love,
for the wonderful things he did for them.
32They must proclaim his greatness in the assembly of the people
and praise him before the council of the leaders.
33The LORD made rivers dry up completely
and stopped springs from flowing.
34He made rich soil become a salty wilderness
because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35He changed deserts into pools of water
and dry land into flowing springs.
36He let hungry people settle there,
and they built a city to live in.
37They sowed the fields and planted grapevines
and reaped an abundant harvest.
38He blessed his people, and they had many children;
he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing.
39When God's people were defeated and humiliated
by cruel oppression and suffering,
40he showed contempt for their oppressors
and made them wander in trackless deserts.
41But he rescued the needy from their misery
and made their families increase like flocks.
42The righteous see this and are glad,
but all the wicked are put to silence.
43May those who are wise think about these things;
may they consider the LORD's constant love.
