A Song of Ascents; of David.
1If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,
Let Israel now say,
2If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side,
When men rose up against us;
3Then they had swallowed us up alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us:
4Then the waters had overwhelmed us,
The stream had gone over our soul;
5Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.
6Blessed be Jehovah,
Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth.
7Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers:
The snare is broken, and we are escaped.
8Our help is in the name of Jehovah,
Who made heaven and earth.

1If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
now may Israel say,
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 if it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
when men rose up against us,
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 then they would have swallowed us up,
when their wrath was kindled againstus;
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 then the flood would have overwhelmedus,
the torrent would have passed over our lives;
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 then the surging waters
would have gone over us.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 Blessed be the Lord,
who has not given us for a prey to their teeth.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 We have escaped
as a bird out of the snare of the hunters;
the snare is broken,
and we have escaped.
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 Our help is in the name of the Lord,
who made heaven and earth.
