Judges 13
13
1And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; and Jehovah delivered them into the hand of the Philistines forty years.
2And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren, and bare not. 3And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not; but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. 4Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: 5for, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to save Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. 6Then the woman came and told her husband, saying, A man of God came unto me, and his countenance was like the countenance of the angel of God, very terrible; and I asked him not whence he was, neither told he me his name: 7but he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazirite unto God from the womb to the day of his death.
8Then Manoah entreated Jehovah, and said, Oh, Lord, I pray thee, let the man of God whom thou didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born. 9And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10And the woman made haste, and ran, and told her husband, and said unto him, Behold, the man hath appeared unto me, that came unto me the other day. 11And Manoah arose, and went after his wife, and came to the man, and said unto him, Art thou the man that spakest unto the woman? And he said, I am. 12And Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and how shall we do unto him? 13And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Of all that I said unto the woman let her beware. 14She may not eat of anything that cometh of the vine, neither let her drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing; all that I commanded her let her observe.
15And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, I pray thee, let us detain thee, that we may make ready a kid for thee. 16And the angel of Jehovah said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt make ready a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto Jehovah. For Manoah knew not that he was the angel of Jehovah. 17And Manoah said unto the angel of Jehovah, What is thy name, that, when thy words come to pass, we may do thee honor? 18And the angel of Jehovah said unto him, Wherefore askest thou after my name, seeing it is wonderful? 19So Manoah took the kid with the meal-offering, and offered it upon the rock unto Jehovah: and the angel did wondrously, and Manoah and his wife looked on. 20For it came to pass, when the flame went up toward heaven from off the altar, that the angel of Jehovah ascended in the flame of the altar: and Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground.
21But the angel of Jehovah did no more appear to Manoah or to his wife. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of Jehovah. 22And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. 23But his wife said unto him, If Jehovah were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt-offering and a meal-offering at our hand, neither would he have showed us all these things, nor would at this time have told such things as these. 24And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and Jehovah blessed him. 25And the Spirit of Jehovah began to move him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

The Birth of Samson
1And the people of Israel again #See ch. 2:11 did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord gave them #[ch. 3:31; 10:7; 1 Sam. 12:9]into the hand of the Philistines for forty years.
2There was a certain man of #Josh. 19:41; [Josh. 15:33] Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. #[1 Sam. 1:2; Luke 1:7]And his wife was barren and had no children. 3#ch. 6:12; Luke 1:11, 13And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold, you are barren and have not borne children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4Therefore be careful #ver. 7, 14; [Num. 6:2, 3; Luke 1:15]and drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, 5for behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. #ch. 16:17; 1 Sam. 1:11; [Num. 6:5] No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be #[See ver. 4 above] a Nazirite to God from the womb, and he shall #[1 Sam. 7:13; 2 Sam. 8:1; 1 Chr. 18:1]begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.” 6Then the woman came and told her husband, #See Deut. 33:1 “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome. #[ver. 17, 18]I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name, 7but he said to me, #ver. 3-5‘Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. So then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.’”
8Then Manoah prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us and teach us what we are to do with the child who will be born.” 9And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field. But Manoah her husband was not with her. 10So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 11And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12And Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, #[Luke 1:66]what is to be the child’s manner of life, and what is his mission?” 13And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine, #ver. 4, 7neither let her drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. All that I commanded her let her observe.”
15Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Please let us detain you and #ch. 6:19; [Gen. 18:5-8]prepare a young goat for you.” 16And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.) 17And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, #[ver. 6]“What is your name, so that, when your words come true, we may honor you?” 18And the angel of the Lord said to him, #Gen. 32:29 “Why do you ask my name, seeing #[Isa. 9:6]it is wonderful?” 19So #ch. 6:19-21Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to the one who works#13:19 Septuagint, Vulgate; Hebrew Lord, and working wonders, and Manoah and his wife were watching. 20And when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar. Now Manoah and his wife were watching, #Lev. 9:24; 1 Chr. 21:16; Ezek. 1:28and they fell on their faces to the ground.
21The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife. #ch. 6:22Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord. 22And Manoah said to his wife, #[See ver. 21 above]“We shall surely die, for we have seen God.” 23But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.” 24And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson. #1 Sam. 2:21; 3:19; Luke 1:80; [Luke 2:52]And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25#See ch. 3:10 And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between #ch. 18:11; Josh. 15:33Zorah and Eshtaol.
