Judges 10
10
1And after Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Shamir in the hill-country of Ephraim. 2And he judged Israel twenty and three years, and died, and was buried in Shamir.
3And after him arose Jair, the Gileadite; and he judged Israel twenty and two years. 4And he had thirty sons that rode on thirty ass colts, and they had thirty cities, which are called Havvoth-jair unto this day, which are in the land of Gilead. 5And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon.
6And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and served the Baalim, and the Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook Jehovah, and served him not. 7And the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon. 8And they vexed and oppressed the children of Israel that year: eighteen years oppressed they all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9And the children of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sore distressed.
10And the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, saying, We have sinned against thee, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baalim. 11And Jehovah said unto the children of Israel, Did not I save you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? 12The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried unto me, and I saved you out of their hand. 13Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will save you no more. 14Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them save you in the time of your distress. 15And the children of Israel said unto Jehovah, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day. 16And they put away the foreign gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.
17Then the children of Ammon were gathered together, and encamped in Gilead. And the children of Israel assembled themselves together, and encamped in Mizpah. 18And the people, the princes of Gilead, said one to another, What man is he that will begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

Tola and Jair
1After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo became judge and began to deliver Israel. He was from Issachar and lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. 2Tola judged Israel 23 years and when he died, was buried in Shamir.
3After him came Jair the Gileadite, # Nm 26:29-10; Jos 17:1,3; Jdg 11:1-2; 1Ch 2:12-24; 7:14-17 who judged Israel 22 years. 4He had 30 sons who rode on 30 donkeys. They had 30 towns # LXX; MT reads donkeys in Gilead, which are called Jair’s Villages # Or called Havvoth-jair to this day. 5When Jair died, he was buried in Kamon.
Israel’s Rebellion and Repentance
6Then the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. # Jdg 3:12; 4:1 They worshiped the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Aram, Sidon, and Moab, and the gods of the Ammonites and the Philistines. # 1Kg 11:33 They abandoned Yahweh and did not worship Him. # Ex 20:5; 23:24; Dt 5:9; Jos 23:7; 2Kg 17:35; Neh 9:35; Is 60:12; Mal 3:18 7So the Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and He sold them to # Lit into the hand of the Philistines and the Ammonites. # Jdg 2:14; 3:8 8They shattered and crushed the Israelites that year, and for 18 years they did the same to all the Israelites who were on the other side of the Jordan # Gn 50:10-11; Dt 1:1,5; 3:8,20,25; Jos 12:17; Jdg 5:17 in the land of the Amorites # Nm 21:31; Jos 24:8; Jdg 11:21; Am 2:10 in Gilead. 9The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim. Israel was greatly oppressed, 10so they cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against You. # Neh 1:6; Jr 14:20; Dn 9:8 We have abandoned our God and worshiped the Baals.”
11The Lord said to the Israelites, “When the Egyptians, # Ex 1–15 Amorites, Ammonites, Philistines, 12Sidonians, Amalekites, and Maonites # LXX reads Midianites # Jos 15:5; 1Sm 23:24-25 oppressed you, and you cried out to Me, did I not deliver you from their power? 13But you have abandoned Me and worshiped other gods. Therefore, I will not deliver you again. 14Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. # Dt 32:37-38; Jr 2:28; 11:12 Let them deliver you in the time of your oppression.”
15But the Israelites said, “We have sinned. Deal with us as You see fit; # Lit Do to us what is good in Your eyes only deliver us # 1Sm 12:10; 1Ch 16:35; Ps 79:9 today! ” 16So they got rid of the foreign gods # Gn 35:2; Jos 24:33; 1Sm 7:3; 2Ch 33:15 among them and worshiped the Lord, # Ex 10:7-8; 12:31; Dt 10:12; Jos 24:14-15; 2Ch 30:8 and He became weary # Nm 21:4; Jdg 16:16; Mc 2:7; Zch 11:8 of Israel’s misery.
17The Ammonites were called together, and they camped in Gilead. So the Israelites assembled and camped at Mizpah. # Gn 31:49; Jdg 11:11,34; Hs 5:1 18The rulers # Lit The people, rulers of Gilead said to one another, “Which man will lead the fight against the Ammonites? He will be the leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
