Psalms 69
69
For the Music Director. To the melody of “Lilies.” A Psalm of David.
1Save me, O God!
For the waters have come up to my neck. # Ps 42:7; 69:14–15
2I sink in deep mire, # Ps 40:2
where there is no foothold;
I have come into deep waters,
and the flood overflows me.
3I am weary with my crying; # Ps 6:6
my throat is parched;
my eyes grow dim # Ps 119:82
while I wait for my God.
4Those who hate me without cause # Ps 35:19; Jn 15:25
are more than the hairs of my head; # Ps 40:12
they are mighty
who would destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully;
what I did not steal,
I must now restore.
5O God, You know my folly,
and my sins are not hidden from You.
6Let not those who wait on You,
O Lord God of Hosts,
be ashamed because of me;
let not those who seek You
be dishonored because of me,
O God of Israel,
7because for Your sake I have borne reproach; # Jer 15:15
shame has covered my face. # Ps 44:22
8I have become a stranger to my brothers,
and an alien to my mother’s children; # Ps 31:11; 38:11; Jn 1:11
9for zeal for Your house has consumed me, # Ps 119:139
and the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen upon me. # Ro 15:3
10When I wept and chastened my soul with fasting, # Ps 35:13
it became my reproach.
11When I made sackcloth my clothing,
I became a proverb to them. # 1Ki 9:7; Jer 24:9
12Those who sit in the gate speak against me,
and I am the song of the drunkards.
13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord,
at an acceptable time; O God,
in the abundance of Your mercy,
answer me in the truth of Your salvation. # Isa 49:8; 2Co 6:2
14Deliver me out of the mire
and let me not sink;
let me be delivered from those who hate me,
and out of the deep waters. # Ps 144:7
15Let not the flood overflow me,
nor let the deep swallow me up;
and let not the pit close its mouth on me.
16Hear me, O Lord, for Your lovingkindness is good; # Ps 63:3
turn to me according to the abundance of Your tender mercies. # Ps 25:16
17Hide not Your face from Your servant,
for I am in trouble; answer me quickly. # Ps 27:9; 102:2
18Draw near to my soul, and redeem it;
deliver me because of my enemies.
19You know my reproach, my shame, and my dishonor; # Heb 12:2
my adversaries are all known to You.
20Reproach has broken my heart,
and I am in despair.
I looked for pity, but there was none, # Isa 63:5
and for comforters, # Job 16:2 but I found none.
21They also gave me poison in my food,
and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. # Mt 27:34; Mk 15:23
22Let their table become a snare before them,
and let their peace be a trap.
23Let their eyes be darkened so they do not see, # Isa 6:9–10
and make their loins tremble continually. # Da 5:6
24Pour out Your indignation upon them, # Ps 79:6; Hos 5:10
and let Your wrathful anger overtake them.
25Let their camp be desolate, # Mt 23:38
and let no one dwell in their tents. # Ac 1:20
26For they persecute him whom You have struck,
and they recount the pain of those whom You have wounded. # 2Ch 28:9; Isa 53:4; Zec 1:15
27Add guilt to their iniquity, # Ne 4:5
and let them not come into Your righteousness. # Isa 26:10
28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living,
and let them not be recorded with the righteous. # Eze 13:9; Lk 10:20
29But I am afflicted and in pain;
let Your salvation, O God, set me safely on high.
30I will praise the name of God with a song, # Ps 28:7
and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. # Ps 34:3
31This will please the Lord
more than an ox or bull with horns and hoofs. # Ps 50:13–14
32The humble shall see this and be glad; # Ps 34:2
and you who seek God, let your hearts revive. # Ps 22:26
33For the Lord hears the poor,
and does not despise His prisoners. # Ps 68:6
34Let heaven and earth praise Him,
the seas and everything that moves in them. # Ps 96:11; Isa 49:13
35For God will save Zion,
and will build the cities of Judah, # Ps 51:18; Isa 44:26
that they may dwell there and possess it.
36The descendants of His servants shall inherit it,
and those who love His name shall dwell in it. # Ps 37:29; 102:28

PSALM 69
Common Meter: 8,6,8,6
To the chief Musician upon Shoshannim,
A Psalm of David.
1Save me, O God, because the floods
do so environ me,
That ev'n unto my very soul
come in the waters be.
2I downward in deep mire do sink,
where standing there is none:
I am into deep waters come,
where floods have o'er me gone.
3I weary with my crying am,
my throat is also dry'd;
Mine eyes do fail, while for my God
I waiting do abide.
4Those men that do without a cause
bear hatred unto me,
Than are the hairs upon my head
in number more they be:
They that would me destroy, and are
mine en'mies wrongfully,
Are mighty: so what I took not,
to render forc'd was I.
5Lord, thou my folly know'st, my sins
not cover'd are from thee.
6Let none that wait on thee be sham'd,
Lord God of hosts, for me.
O Lord, the God of Israel,
let none, who search do make,
And seek thee, be at any time
confounded for my sake.
7For I have borne reproach for thee,
my face is hid with shame.
8To brethren strange, to mother's sons
an alien I became.
9Because the zeal did eat me up,
which to thine house I bear;
And the reproaches cast at thee,
upon me fallen are.
10My tears and fasts, t' afflict my soul,
were turned to my shame.
11When sackcloth I did wear, to them
a proverb I became.
12The men that in the gate do sit
against me evil spake;
They also that vile drunkards were
of me their song did make.
13But, in an acceptable time,
my pray'r, Lord, is to thee:
In truth of thy salvation, Lord,
and mercy great, hear me.
14Deliver me out of the mire,
from sinking do me keep;
Free me from those that do me hate,
and from the waters deep.
15Let not the flood on me prevail,
whose water overflows;
Nor deep me swallow, nor the pit
her mouth upon me close.
16Hear me, O Lord, because thy love
and kindness is most good;
Turn unto me, according to
thy mercies' multitude.
17Nor from thy servant hide thy face:
I'm troubled, soon attend.
18Draw near my soul, and it redeem;
me from my foes defend.
19To thee is my reproach well known,
my shame, and my disgrace:
Those that mine adversaries be
are all before thy face.
20Reproach hath broke my heart; I'm full
of grief: I look'd for one
To pity me, but none I found;
comforters found I none.
21They also bitter gall did give
unto me for my meat:
They gave me vinegar to drink,
when as my thirst was great.
22Before them let their table prove
a snare; and do thou make
Their welfare and prosperity
a trap themselves to take.
23Let thou their eyes so darken'd be,
that sight may them forsake;
And let their loins be made by thee
continually to shake.
24Thy fury pour thou out on them,
and indignation;
And let thy wrathful anger, Lord,
fast hold take them upon.
25All waste and desolate let be
their habitation;
And in their tabernacles all
inhabitants be none.
26Because him they do persecute,
whom thou didst smite before;
They talk unto the grief of those
whom thou hast wounded sore.
27Add thou iniquity unto
their former wickedness;
And do not let them come at all
into thy righteousness.
28Out of the book of life let them
be raz'd and blotted quite;
Among the just and righteous
let not their names be writ.
29But now become exceeding poor
and sorrowful am I:
By thy salvation, O my God,
let me be set on high.
30The name of God I with a song
most cheerfully will praise;
And I, in giving thanks to him,
his name shall highly raise.
31This to the Lord a sacrifice
more gracious shall prove
Than bullock, ox, or any beast
that hath both horn and hoof.
32When this the humble men shall see,
it joy to them shall give:
O all ye that do seek the Lord,
your hearts shall ever live.
33For God the poor hears, and will not
his prisoners contemn.
34Let heav'n, and earth, and seas, him praise,
and all that move in them.
35For God will Judah's cities build,
and he will Sion save,
That they may dwell therein,
and it in sure possession have.
36And they that are his servants' seed
inherit shall the same;
So shall they have their dwelling there
that love his blessed name.
