Psalms 55
55
For the Music Director. With stringed instruments. A Contemplative Maskil of David.
1Give ear to my prayer, O God,
and do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
2#Ps 63:1; 84:2 Attend to me, and answer me;
I am restless in my complaint, and I murmur,
3#Ps 79:10; 80:5 because of the voice of the enemy,
because of the pressure of the wicked,
for they cause trouble to drop on me,
and in wrath they have animosity against me.
4#Isa 30:29; Ps 62:8 My heart is in pain within me,
and the terrors of death have fallen on me.
5#Ps 42:11; 43:5 Fear and trembling come into me,
and horror has overwhelmed me.
6#2Sa 17:22; Dt 3:8–9 I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
For then I would fly away and be at rest.
7#Ps 88:7; Jnh 2:3 Indeed, then I would wander far off,
and remain in the wilderness. Selah
8#Job 35:10; Ps 63:6 I would hasten my escape
from the windy storm and tempest.”
9#Ps 38:6; 18:2 Confuse, O Lord, divide their tongues,
for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10#Ps 42:3; Joel 2:17 Day and night they go around it on its walls;
trouble and sorrow are in its midst.
11#Ps 42:5; 43:5 Destruction is in its midst;
oppression and treachery do not depart from its streets.
12For it is not an enemy who reproachesme;
then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me;
then I could hide from him.
13But it was you, my peer,
my guide, and my acquaintance.
14We took pleasant counsel together,
and walked to the house of God in company.
15May death surprise them,
and may their lives go down to Sheol,
for wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.
16As for me, I will call on God,
and the Lord will save me.
17Evening and morning and at noon,
I will make my complaint and murmur,
and He will hear my voice.
18He has ransomed my life in peace
from the battle against me,
for there were many against me.
19God will hear and afflict them,
even He who sits enthroned from of old. Selah
Because they do not change,
therefore they do not fear God.
20My friend has set his hands against those at peace with him;
he has violated his covenant.
21The words of his mouth were smoother than butter,
but battle was in his heart;
his words were softer than oil,
yet they were drawn swords.
22Cast your burden on the Lord,
and He will sustain you;
He will never allow
the righteous to be moved.
23But You, O God, will cast the wicked down
into the pit of destruction;
men of blood and deceitful men
will not live out half their days.
But I will trust in You.

Psalm 55
55
1 Unto the end. For the people who have become far removed from the Sacred. Of David, with the inscription of a title, when the Philistines held him in Gath.
2 Have mercy on me, O God, because man has trampled over me. All day long, he has afflicted me by fighting against me.
3 My enemies have trampled over me all day long. For those who make war against me are many.
4 From the height of the day, I will be afraid. But truly, I will hope in you.
5 In God, I will praise my words. In God, I have put my trust. I will not fear what flesh can do to me.
6 All day long, they curse my words. All their intentions are for evil against me.
7 They will dwell and hide themselves. They will watch my heel, just as they waited for my soul;
8 because of this, nothing will save them. In your anger, you will crush the people.
9 O God, I have announced my life to you. You have placed my tears in your sight, and even in your promise.
10 Then my enemies will be turned back. On whatever day that I call upon you, behold, I know that you are my God.
11 In God, I will praise the word. In the Lord, I will praise his speech. In God, I have hoped. I will not fear what man can do to me.
12 My vows to you, O God, are in me. I will repay them. Praises be to you.
13 For you have rescued my soul from death and my feet from slipping, so that I may be pleasing in the sight of God, in the light of the living.
