Psalms 139
139
For the Music Director. A Psalm of David.
1O Lord, You have searched me
and known me. # Ps 17:3; Jer 12:3
2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; # 2Ki 19:27
You perceive my thought from afar. # Mt 9:4
3You winnow my path and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways. # Job 31:4
4Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.
5You beset me behind and before,
and laid Your hand upon me.
6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it. # Job 42:3; Ro 11:33
7Where shall I go from Your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from Your presence? # Jon 1:3
8If I ascend into heaven, You are there; # Am 9:2–3
if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. # Job 26:6; Pr 15:11
9If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10even there shall Your hand lead me # Ps 23:3
and Your right hand take hold of me.
11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall befall me,
even the night about me shall be my light.”
12Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You
and the night shines as the day,
for darkness and light are alike with You. # Job 34:22; Da 2:22
13For You formed my inward parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb. # Ps 71:6; Jer 1:5
14I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. # Ge 1:26–27
Marvelous are Your works,
and that my soul knows right well.
15My frame was not hidden from You,
when I was made in secret,
and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. # Ps 63:9
16Your eyes saw my unformed substance.
And in Your book were they all written, # Ps 56:8
the days created for me, when as yet there were none of them.
17How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them! # Ps 40:5
18Were I to count them,
they would be in number more than the sand.
When I awake,
I am still with You.
19Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God! # Ps 5:6; Isa 11:4
Depart from me, O bloodthirsty men!
20For they speak against You wickedly;
Your enemies take your name in vain. # Ex 20:7; Jude 15
21Do I not hate those, O Lord, who hate You? # 2Ch 19:2; Ps 119:158
And do I not loathe those who rise up against You?
22I hate them with perfect hatred;
I count them my enemies.
23Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me, and know my thoughts! # Job 31:6; Ps 26:2
24And see if there be any wicked way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting! # Ps 5:8; 143:10

Psalms 139

God Knows Everything
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1Lord, you have examined me
and know all about me.
2You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You know my thoughts before I think them.
3You know where I go and where I lie down.
You know everything I do.
4Lord, even before I say a word,
you already know it.
5You are all around me—in front and in back—
and have put your hand on me.
6Your knowledge is amazing to me;
it is more than I can understand.
7Where can I go to get away from your Spirit?
Where can I run from you?
8If I go up to the heavens, you are there.
If I lie down in the grave, you are there.
9If I rise with the sun in the east
and settle in the west beyond the sea,
10even there you would guide me.
With your right hand you would hold me.
11I could say, “The darkness will hide me.
Let the light around me turn into night.”
12But even the darkness is not dark to you.
The night is as light as the day;
darkness and light are the same to you.
13You made my whole being;
you formed me in my mother’s body.
14I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way.
What you have done is wonderful.
I know this very well.
15You saw my bones being formed
as I took shape in my mother’s body.
When I was put together there,
16you saw my body as it was formed.
All the days planned for me
were written in your book
before I was one day old.
17God, your thoughts are precious to me.
They are so many!
18If I could count them,
they would be more than all the grains of sand.
When I wake up,
I am still with you.
19God, I wish you would kill the wicked!
Get away from me, you murderers!
20They say evil things about you.
Your enemies use your name thoughtlessly.
21Lord, I hate those who hate you;
I hate those who rise up against you.
22I feel only hate for them;
they are my enemies.
23God, examine me and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24See if there is any bad thing in me.
Lead me on the road to everlasting life.
