Israel’s First Census
1#Ex 19:1; 40:17And the Lord spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai in the tent of meeting on the first day of the second month in the second year after they went out from the land of Egypt, saying: 2#Ex 30:12; 38:26Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls, 3#Ex 30:14; Nu 14:29from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war in Israel. You and Aaron will number them by their armies. 4#Nu 1:16; Ex 18:25With you there will be a man of every tribe, each one the head of his father’s house. 5#Nu 7:30These are the names of the men who will stand with you:
of the tribe of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
6#Nu 7:36of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;
7#Lk 3:32of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab;
8#Nu 7:18of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar;
9#Nu 7:24of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon;
10#Nu 7:48; 7:54of the children of Joseph:
of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud;
of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
11#Nu 7:60of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni;
12#Nu 7:66of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai;
13#Nu 7:72of Asher, Pagiel the son of Okran;
14#Nu 2:14; 7:42of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel;
15#Nu 7:78of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.
16#Ex 18:21; 18:25These were the renowned of the congregation, leaders of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Israel.
17Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned by name, 18#Ezr 2:59; Heb 7:3and they assembled all the congregation on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees according to their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the Wilderness of Sinai.
20#Nu 26:5–7; 2:10–11The children of Reuben, the oldest son of Israel,
by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war, 21#Nu 26:7those who were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty-six thousand five hundred.

30#Nu 26:26–27Of the children of Zebulun,

namely, of the children of Ephraim,
by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war, 33#Nu 26:37those who were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand five hundred.
34Of the children of Manasseh,
by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war, 35#Nu 26:34those who were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36#Ge 49:27Of the children of Benjamin,

40Of the children of Asher,
by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war, 41#Nu 26:47those who were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty-one thousand five hundred.
42Of the children of Naphtali,
by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war, 43#Nu 26:50those who were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44#Nu 26:64These are those who were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the leaders of Israel, being twelve men. Each one was for the house of his fathers. 45So were all those who were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go out to war in Israel. 46#Ex 12:37; 38:26Even all they who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.
47#Nu 2:33; 3:1–4:49But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. 48For the Lord had spoken to Moses, saying: 49#Nu 26:62Only you will not number the tribe of Levi, nor take the census of them among the children of Israel, 50#Ex 38:21; 31:18; Nu 4:15but you will appoint the Levites over the tent of the testimony, and over all its vessels, and over all things that belong to it. They will carry the tabernacle, and all its vessels, and they will minister to it, and will camp around the tabernacle. 51#Nu 3:38; 3:10When the tabernacle sets out, the Levites will take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites will set it up, and the foreigner that approaches will be put to death. 52#Nu 2:2; 2:34The children of Israel will pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their armies. 53#Nu 16:46; Lev 10:6But the Levites will camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so there will be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel. And the Levites will keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.
54Thus the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.

God Commands Moses to Take a Census
1Yahweh spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai, in the tent of assembly, on the first of the month, in the second year after they came out#Literally “of their coming out” of the land of Egypt, saying, 2“Take a census of#Literally “Lift up the head of” the entire community of the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” according to their clans and their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” according to the number of names, every male individually 3from twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war. You and Aaron must muster them#Or “count them,” or “summon them,” or “enroll them” for their wars. 4A man from each tribe will be with you, each man the head of his family.#Literally “the house of his father” 5And these are the names of the men who will assist you:#Literally “stand with you” from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; 6from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; 7from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; 8from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; 9from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon. 10From the descendants of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 11From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; 12from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; 13from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; 14from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; 15and from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.” 16These are the ones summoned from the community, the leaders of their ancestors’#Or “fathers’ ” tribes; they are the heads of Israel’s clans.
17So Moses and Aaron took these men who had been designated by name, 18and they summoned the entire community on the first day of the second month. And they registered themselves among their clans according to their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” according to the number of names from those twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above individually, 19just as Yahweh commanded Moses. And he counted them in the desert of Sinai.
20The descendants of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, their genealogies according to their clans, according to their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” according to the number of names, every male individually from twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above, everyone who is able to go to war: 21those who were counted from the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22From the descendants of Simeon, their genealogies according to their clans, according to their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” those who were counted according to the number of their names, every individual male from twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above, everyone who is able to go to war: 23those who were counted from the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24From the descendants of Gad, their genealogies according to their clans, according to their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” according to the number of names, from those twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above, everyone who is able to go to war: 25those who were counted from the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

44These are the ones counted whom Moses and Aaron mustered,#Or “counted,” or “summoned,” or “enrolled” with the twelve leaders of Israel, each one from his family.#Literally “the house of his fathers” 45So all those who were counted from the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” according to their families,#Literally “the house of their fathers” from those twenty years old#Literally “a son of twenty years” and above, everyone in Israel who is able to go to war. 46All of the ones counted were six hundred and three thousand, five hundred and fifty. 47The Levites from their ancestors’#Or “fathers’ ” tribe were not mustered#Or “counted,” or “summoned,” or “enrolled” in their midst.
48And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 49“You will not muster#Or “count,” or “summon,” or “enroll” the tribe of Levi, and you will not take a census of#Literally “Lift up the head of” them in the midst of the Israelites.#Literally “sons/children of Israel” 50You will appoint#Or “count,” or “summon,” or “enroll” them over the tabernacle of the testimony,#Other modern translations read “tabernacle of the covenant” over all its vessels, and over all that belongs to it. They will carry the tabernacle and all its vessels, and they will care for it; and they will camp around the tabernacle. 51And when the tabernacle is set out, the Levites will take it down,#Literally “lower it” and when encamping the tabernacle the Levites will set it up; the stranger#Or “outsider” that approaches it will be put to death. 52The Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” will encamp, each in their own camp, and each by their#Hebrew “his” or “its” own banner according to their divisions. 53But the Levites will encamp around the tabernacle of the testimony,#Other modern translations read “tabernacle of the covenant” and there will not be wrath on the community of the Israelites;#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and the Levites will keep the requirements of the tabernacle of the testimony.”#Other modern translations read “tabernacle of the covenant” 54And the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” did thus; they did everything that Yahweh commanded Moses.
