The Man With a Withered Hand
Mt 12:9–14; Lk 6:6–11
1#Mt 12:9–14; Mk 1:21Again, He entered the synagogue, and there was a man who had a withered hand. 2#Lk 14:1; 6:7They watched Him to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3He said to the man who had the withered hand, “Stand up.”
4Then He said to them, “Is it lawful to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they kept silent.
5#Lk 6:10; Ro 11:25When He had looked around at them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He said to the man, “Stretch your hand forward.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored as whole as the other. 6#Mt 22:16; Mk 12:13Then the Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel with the Herodians against Him, how to kill Him.
The Crowd at the Seaside
7#Mt 4:25; Lk 6:17Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea. And a great crowd followed Him from Galilee and Judea 8#Eze 35:15; Isa 34:5and Jerusalem, and Idumea, and from beyond the Jordan. And those from Tyre and Sidon, a great crowd, when they heard what great things He did, came to Him. 9He told the disciples to have a small boat ready for Him because of the crowd, lest they should crush Him. 10#Mt 14:36; Mk 6:56For He had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed on Him to touch Him. 11#Mt 4:3; 14:33When unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him, crying out, “You are the Son of God.” 12#Mt 12:16; Mk 1:25But He sternly ordered them not to make Him known.
The Choosing of the Twelve Apostles
Mt 10:1–4; Lk 6:12–16
13He went up into the mountain and called to Him those whom He desired, and they came to Him. 14He ordained twelve to be with Him, and to be sent out to preach, 15and to have authority to heal sicknesses and to cast out demons: 16#Jn 1:42; Ac 1:13Simon, whom He named Peter; 17James, the son of Zebedee, and John, the brother of James, whom he surnamed Boanerges (meaning Sons of Thunder); 18#Ac 1:13; Mk 2:14; Mt 9:9Andrew,and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas; and James the son of Alphaeus; andThaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot; 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Him.
Jesus and Beelzebub
Mt 12:22–32; Lk 11:14–23; 12:10
20#Mk 6:31Then they entered a house, and the crowd came together again, so that they could not even eat bread. 21#Jn 10:20; Ac 26:24When His family heard of it, they went out to seize Him, for they said, “He is beside Himself.”
22#Mt 9:34; 10:25And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebub, and by the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.”
23#Mt 13:34So He called them to Him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27#Isa 53:12; Mt 12:29No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then he will plunder his house. 28#Mt 12:31–32; Lk 12:10Truly I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they speak. 29#Mt 25:46; Mk 12:40But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal condemnation.”
30For they said, “He has an unclean spirit.”
The Mother and Brothers of Jesus
Mt 12:46–50; Lk 8:19–21
31#Lk 8:19–21Then His mother and His brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to Him, calling Him. 32The crowd sat around Him and said to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are outside asking for You.”
33He answered, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”
34Then He looked around at those who sat around Him and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35#Mt 7:21; 1Jn 2:17For whoever does the will of God is My brother, and My sister, and My mother.”

Mark 3

Healing on the Sabbath
1Jesus returned to the synagogue. A man with a withered hand was there. 2Wanting to bring charges against Jesus, they were watching Jesus closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 3He said to the man with the withered hand, “Step up where people can see you.” 4Then he said to them, “Is it legal on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they said nothing. 5Looking around at them with anger, deeply grieved at their unyielding hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he did, and his hand was made healthy. 6At that, the Pharisees got together with the supporters of Herod to plan how to destroy Jesus.
Healing and throwing demons out
7Jesus left with his disciples and went to the lake. A large crowd followed him because they had heard what he was doing. They were from Galilee, 8Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the area surrounding Tyre and Sidon. 9Jesus told his disciples to get a small boat ready for him so the crowd wouldn’t crush him. 10He had healed so many people that everyone who was sick pushed forward so that they could touch him. 11Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down at his feet and shouted, “You are God’s Son!” 12But he strictly ordered them not to reveal who he was.
Jesus appoints twelve apostles
13Jesus went up on a mountain and called those he wanted, and they came to him. 14He appointed twelve and called them apostles. He appointed them to be with him, to be sent out to preach, 15and to have authority to throw out demons. 16He appointed twelve: Peter, a name he gave Simon; 17James and John, Zebedee’s sons, whom he nicknamed Boanerges, which means “sons of Thunder”; 18and Andrew; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; James, Alphaeus’ son; Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean;#3.18 Or zealot 19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
Misunderstandings about Jesus
20Jesus entered a house. A crowd gathered again so that it was impossible for him and his followers even to eat. 21When his family heard what was happening, they came to take control of him. They were saying, “He’s out of his mind!”
22The legal experts came down from Jerusalem. Over and over they charged, “He’s possessed by Beelzebul. He throws out demons with the authority of the ruler of demons.”
23When Jesus called them together he spoke to them in a parable: “How can Satan throw Satan out? 24A kingdom involved in civil war will collapse. 25And a house torn apart by divisions will collapse. 26If Satan rebels against himself and is divided, then he can’t endure. He’s done for. 27No one gets into the house of a strong person and steals anything without first tying up the strong person. Only then can the house be burglarized. 28I assure you that human beings will be forgiven for everything, for all sins and insults of every kind. 29But whoever insults the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. That person is guilty of a sin with consequences that last forever.” 30He said this because the legal experts were saying, “He’s possessed by an evil spirit.”
31His mother and brothers arrived. They stood outside and sent word to him, calling for him. 32A crowd was seated around him, and those sent to him said, “Look, your mother, brothers, and sisters are outside looking for you.”
33He replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 34Looking around at those seated around him in a circle, he said, “Look, here are my mother and my brothers. 35Whoever does God’s will is my brother, sister, and mother.”
