The Temptation of Jesus
Mk 1:12–13; Lk 4:1–13
1Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. # Heb 2:18 2And He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, # Ge 7:4; Ex 34:28; 1Ki 19:8 and then He was hungry. 3And the tempter came to Him # 1Th 3:5 and said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones be turned into bread.”
4But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’ # Dt 8:3; Lk 4:4 # 4:4 Dt 8:3. ”
5Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, # Ne 11:1; Mt 27:53 and set Him on the highest point of the temple, 6and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written,
‘He shall give His angels charge concerning you,’ # 4:6 Ps 91:11–12.
and
‘In their hands they shall lift you up,
lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.’ # Ps 91:11–12 # 4:6 Ps 91:12. ”
7Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ # Dt 6:16 # 4:7 Dt 6:16. ”
8Again, the devil took Him up on a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their grandeur, # Mt 16:26; 1Jn 2:15–16 9and said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10Then Jesus said to him, “Get away from here, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’ # Dt 10:20 # 4:10 Dt 6:13. ”
11Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him. # Mt 26:53; Lk 22:43; Heb 1:14
Jesus’ Galilean Ministry
Mk 1:14–15; Lk 4:14–15
12Now when Jesus heard that John was put in prison, # Mk 1:14; Lk 3:20 He left for Galilee. # Lk 4:14 13And leaving Nazareth, He came and lived in Capernaum, # Mk 1:21; Jn 4:46 which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14that what was spoken by Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, # Mt 1:22 saying:
15“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles:
16The people who sat in darkness
saw great light.
And on those who sat in the land of the shadow of death,
light has dawned.” # Job 3:5; Isa 9:1–2; Lk 2:32 # 4:15–16 Isa 9:1–2.
17From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent! For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” # Mt 3:2; Mk 1:14–15
The Calling of the First Disciples
Mk 1:16–20; Lk 5:1–11
18As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, # Mt 15:29 He saw two brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, # Jn 1:40–42 throwing a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20They immediately left their nets and followed Him.
21And going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. 22They immediately left the boat and their father and followed Him.
Ministering to Great Crowds
Lk 6:17–19
23Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, # Mt 13:54; Mk 1:21; Lk 4:16 preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all sorts of diseases among the people. # Mt 9:35 24His fame went throughout all Syria. And they brought to Him all sick people who were taken with various diseases and tormented with pain, those who were possessed with demons, those who had seizures, and those who had paralysis, # Mt 8:6; 17:15 and He healed them. 25Great crowds followed Him from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. # Mk 5:20; Lk 6:17

Jesus Begins His Ministry
12Now when he heard that #ch. 14:3; Mark 1:14; Luke 3:19, 20; [John 3:24] John had been arrested, #Luke 4:14he withdrew into Galilee. 13And leaving #See ch. 2:23 Nazareth he went and lived in #[ch. 9:1] Capernaum by #John 6:1 the sea, in the territory of #Josh. 19:32-34Zebulun and Naphtali, 14#See ch. 1:22so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

Jesus Calls the First Disciples
18 # For ver. 18-22, see Mark 1:16-20; [Luke 5:2-11; John 1:40-42] While walking by #ver. 13the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you #ch. 13:47fishers of men.”#4:19 The Greek word anthropoi refers here to both men and women 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds

Mark 1:39 And he went throughout all Galilee, #ch. 9:35; 13:54; Mark 1:21; Luke 4:15; John 18:20 teaching in their synagogues and #ch. 24:14; Luke 4:43; [ch. 13:19] proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and #ch. 8:16; 14:35, 36; Mark 1:34; 6:55, 56healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24So his fame spread throughout all #Luke 2:2 Syria, and #[See ver. 23 above] they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and #ch. 8:6 pains, #[John 10:21] those oppressed by demons, #ch. 17:15 those having seizures, and #ch. 9:2, 6paralytics, and he healed them. 25#Mark 3:7, 8; Luke 6:17 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the #Mark 5:20Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.
