Malachi 1
1
1#Isa 13:1; Hab 1:1The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.
Israel Preferred to Edom
2#Jer 31:3; Isa 41:8â9I have loved you, says the Lord.
But you say, âHow have You loved us?â
Was not Esau Jacobâs brother? says the Lord. Yet I have loved Jacob; 3#Jer 49:16â18; Eze 35:3â4but Esau I have hated, and I have made his mountains a desolation and left his inheritance for the jackals of the desert.
4#Isa 9:9â10; Eze 25:14Whereas Edom says, âWe are impoverished, but we will rebuild the ruins,â thus says the Lord of Hosts: They may build, but I will tear down. They will be called the Wicked Territory, and the people against whom the Lord has indignation forever. 5Your eyes will see this, and you will say, âGreat is the Lord, beyond the border of Israel!â
Profane Offerings
6#Lk 6:46; Ex 20:12A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is My fear? says the Lord of Hosts to you, O priests, who despise My name.
But you say, âHow have we despised Your name?â
7#Mal 1:12You offer defiled food on My altar, but say, âHow have we defiled You?â
By saying, âThe table of the Lord is contemptible.â 8#Dt 15:21When you offer the blind as a sacrifice, is it not evil? When you offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? Offer it now to your governor! Would he be pleased with you, or accept you? says the Lord of Hosts.
9#Jer 27:18But now entreat Godâs favor, that He may be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will He accept you favorably? says the Lord of Hosts.
10#Jer 6:20Who is there among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on My altar in vain? I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of Hosts, nor will I accept an offering from your hand. 11#Isa 66:19â20; 45:6For from the rising of the sun to its setting, My name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to My name, and a pure offering. For My name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of Hosts.
12But you profane it, in that you say, âThe table of the Lord is defiled, and its fruit, that is, its food is contemptible.â 13#Mic 6:3You also say, âWhat a weariness it is,â and you snort at it, says the Lord of Hosts.
You bring in what is stolen, the lame, or the sick; thus you bring an offering! Should I accept this from your hand? says the Lord. 14#Zec 14:9; Ps 47:2But cursed be the deceiver who has in his flock a male, and vows, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great king, says the Lord of Hosts, and My name is to be feared among the nations.

Malachi 1
1
âI Loved Jacob, but Esau I Hatedâ
1This is a divine revelation. The Lord spoke his word to Israel through Malachi.
2âI loved you,â says the Lord.
âBut you ask, âHow did you love us?â
âWasnât Esau Jacobâs brother?â declares the Lord. âI loved Jacob, 3but Esau I hated. I turned his mountains into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the jackals in the desert.
4âThe descendants of Esau may say, âWe have been beaten down, but we will rebuild the ruins.â
âYet, this is what the Lord of Armies says: They may rebuild, but I will tear it down. They will be called âthe Wicked Landâ and âthe people with whom the Lord is always angry.â 5You will see these things with your own eyes and say, âEven outside the borders of Israel the Lord is great.â
The Priests Offer Unacceptable Sacrifices to the LORD
6âThis is what the Lord of Armies says: A son honors his father, and a servant honors his master. So if I am a father, where is my honor? If I am a master, where is my respect? You priests despise my name.
âBut you ask, âHow have we despised your name?â
7âYou offer contaminated food on my altar.
âBut you ask, âThen how have we contaminated you?â
âWhen you say that the Lordâs table may be despised. 8When you bring a blind animal to sacrifice, isnât that wrong? When you bring a lame or a sick animal, isnât that wrong? Try offering it to your governor. Would he accept it from you? Would he welcome you?â asks the Lord of Armies.
9âNow try asking God to be kind to you. This is what you are doing! Will he welcome you?â asks the Lord of Armies.
10âI wish one of you would shut the doors âto my houseâ so that you could not light fires on my altar for no reason. Iâm not pleased with you,â says the Lord of Armies, âand I wonât accept your offerings.
11âFrom the nations where the sun rises to the nations where the sun sets, my name will be great. Incense and pure offerings will be offered everywhere in my name, because my name will be great among the nations,â says the Lord of Armies. 12âBut you dishonor it when you say that the Lordâs table may be contaminated and that its food may be despised.
13âYou say, âOh what a nuisance it is,â and you sniff at it in disgust,â says the Lord of Armies. âYou bring stolen, lame, and sick animals. When you bring such offerings, should I accept them from you?â asks the Lord.
14âCheaters are under a curse. They have male animals in their flocks that they vow to give âas a sacrificeâ. But they sacrifice second-rate ones to the Lord instead. I am a great king,â says the Lord of Armies. âAmong the nations my name is respected.
