The Temptation of Jesus
Mt 4:1–11; Mk 1:12–13
1#Mt 4:1–11; Mk 1:12–13Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2#1Ki 19:8; Ex 34:28being tempted by the devil for forty days. During those days He ate nothing. And when they were ended, He was hungry.
3The devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”
4#Dt 8:3; Lk 4:8Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’#Dt 8:3.”
5The devil, taking Him up onto a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6#Jn 12:31; 14:30And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this power and their glory, for it has been delivered to me. And I give it to whomever I will. 7If You, then, will worship me, all will be Yours.”
8#Dt 6:13; Mt 4:10And Jesus answered him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’#Dt 6:13.”
9#Mt 4:5–6; Lk 4:3He brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10#Ps 91:11–12For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge concerning you,
to preserve you,’
11and
‘In their hands they shall hold you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’#Ps 91:11–12.”
12#Dt 6:16Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’#Dt 6:16.”
13#Jn 14:30; Heb 4:15When the devil had ended all the temptations, he departed from Him until another time.
The Beginning of the Galilean Ministry
Mt 4:12–17; Mk 1:14–15
14#Mt 4:12Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee. And His fame went throughout the surrounding region. 15#Mt 4:23He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by everyone.
The Rejection of Jesus at Nazareth
Mt 13:53–58; Mk 6:1–6
16#Lk 2:51; 2:39He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day. And He stood up to read. 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. When He had unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:
18#Mt 11:5; Ps 146:7–8; Isa 42:7 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
because He has anointed Me
to preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the broken-hearted,
to preach deliverance to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19#Isa 61:2 to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20#Lk 4:17; Mt 26:55Then He rolled up the scroll, and He gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all those who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
22#Jn 6:42; Ps 45:2All bore witness to Him, and wondered at the gracious words which came from His mouth. Then they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
23#Mt 4:13; Mk 6:1He said to them, “You will surely say to Me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal Yourself. Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’ ”
24#Mt 13:57; Jn 4:44He also said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25#1Ki 17:1; Jas 5:17But I tell you truthfully, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were closed for three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land. 26Yet to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, a city of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. But none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28All those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath. 29#Nu 15:35They rose up and thrust Him out of the city and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down headlong. 30#Jn 10:39; 8:59But passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
The Man With an Unclean Spirit
Mk 1:21–28
31#Mt 4:13Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32#Lk 4:36; Mt 7:28–29They were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.
33In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34#Mk 1:24; Mt 8:29; Jas 2:19“Leave us alone! What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
35#Lk 4:41; Mt 8:26Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him and did not hurt him.
36#Lk 4:32They were all amazed and said among themselves, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37#Lk 4:14; Mt 9:26And His fame went out to every place in the surrounding countryside.
The Healing of Many People
Mt 8:14–17; Mk 1:29–34
38#Mt 8:14–15; Mk 1:29–31He went out of the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was taken ill with a high fever, and they asked Him about her. 39#Lk 4:35; 8:24So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she rose and served them.
40#Mt 8:16–17; Mk 1:32–34Now when the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to Him. And He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41#Mk 1:34; 3:11And demons came out of many, crying out, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” But He rebuked them and did not permit them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.
Preaching in the Synagogues
Mk 1:35–39
42When it was day He departed and went into a remote place. And searching for Him, the people came to Him and tried to prevent Him from leaving them. 43But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also, for this is why I was sent.” 44#Mt 4:23; Mk 1:39And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.

The Temptation of Jesus
(Mt 4.1–11; Mk 1.12–13)
1Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit and was led by the Spirit into the desert, 2where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. In all that time he ate nothing, so that he was hungry when it was over.
3The Devil said to him, “If you are God's Son, order this stone to turn into bread.”
4 #
Deut 8.3
But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Human beings cannot live on bread alone.’ ”
5Then the Devil took him up and showed him in a second all the kingdoms of the world. 6“I will give you all this power and all this wealth,” the Devil told him. “It has all been handed over to me, and I can give it to anyone I choose. 7All this will be yours, then, if you worship me.”
8 #
Deut 6.13
Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only him!’ ”
9Then the Devil took him to Jerusalem and set him on the highest point of the Temple, and said to him, “If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here. 10#Ps 91.11For the scripture says, ‘God will order his angels to take good care of you.’ 11#Ps 91.12It also says, ‘They will hold you up with their hands so that not even your feet will be hurt on the stones.’ ”

Deut 6.16
But Jesus answered, “The scripture says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
13When the Devil finished tempting Jesus in every way, he left him for a while.
Jesus Begins his Work in Galilee
(Mt 4.12–17; Mk 1.14–15)
14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, and the power of the Holy Spirit was with him. The news about him spread throughout all that territory. 15He taught in the synagogues and was praised by everyone.
Jesus is Rejected at Nazareth
(Mt 13.53–58; Mk 6.1–6)
16Then Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath he went as usual to the synagogue. He stood up to read the Scriptures 17and was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it is written:

Is 61.1–2 (LXX) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has chosen me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind;
to set free the oppressed
19 and announce that the time has come
when the Lord will save his people.”
20Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. All the people in the synagogue had their eyes fixed on him, 21as he said to them, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.”
22They were all well impressed with him and marvelled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, “Isn't he the son of Joseph?”
23He said to them, “I am sure that you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You will also tell me to do here in my home town the same things you heard were done in Capernaum. 24#Jn 4.44I tell you this,” Jesus added, “prophets are never welcomed in their home town.

1 Kgs 17.1
“Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for 3.5 years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land. 26#1 Kgs 17.8–16Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. 27#2 Kgs 5.1–14And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
28When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were filled with anger. 29They rose up, dragged Jesus out of the town, and took him to the top of the hill on which their town was built. They meant to throw him over the cliff, 30but he walked through the middle of the crowd and went his way.
A Man with an Evil Spirit
(Mk 1.21–28)
31Then Jesus went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, where he taught the people on the Sabbath. 32#Mt 7.28–29They were all amazed at the way he taught, because he spoke with authority. 33In the synagogue was a man who had the spirit of an evil demon in him; he screamed out in a loud voice, 34“Ah! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Are you here to destroy us? I know who you are: you are God's holy messenger!”
35Jesus ordered the spirit, “Be quiet and come out of the man!” The demon threw the man down in front of them and went out of him without doing him any harm.
36The people were all amazed and said to one another, “What kind of words are these? With authority and power this man gives orders to the evil spirits, and they come out!” 37And the report about Jesus spread everywhere in that region.
Jesus Heals Many People
(Mt 8.14–17; Mk 1.29–34)
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her. 39He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them.
40After sunset all who had friends who were sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus; he placed his hands on every one of them and healed them all. 41Demons also went out from many people, screaming, “You are the Son of God!”
Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak, because they knew that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Preaches in the Synagogues
(Mk 1.35–39)
42At daybreak Jesus left the town and went off to a lonely place. The people started looking for him, and when they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving. 43But he said to them, “I must preach the Good News about the Kingdom of God in other towns also, because that is what God sent me to do.”
44So he preached in the synagogues throughout the country.
