The Resurrection of Jesus
Mt 28:1–10; Mk 16:1–8; Jn 20:1–10
1#Lk 24:10; Jn 20:1–2Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3#Lk 24:23But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4#Mk 16:5; Ac 1:10While they were greatly perplexed concerning this, suddenly two men stood by them in shining garments. 5As they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6#Mt 17:22–23; Lk 9:22He is not here, but has risen! Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, 7saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ” 8Then they remembered His words.
9And they returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10#Mk 15:40–41; Lk 8:2–3It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11#Mk 16:11But their words seemed like fables to them, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb. Stooping down, he saw the linen clothes lying by themselves. He departed, wondering in himself what had happened.
The Walk to Emmaus
Mk 16:12–13
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles#Gk. 60 stadia, or 11 kilometers. from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15#Lk 24:36While they communed and reasoned together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16#Jn 20:14; 21:4But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.
17He said to them, “What kind of communication are you sharing with one another while you are walking and are sad?”
18#Jn 19:25One of them, named Cleopas, answered Him, “Are You the only foreigner in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there in these days?”
19#Mt 21:11; Ac 2:22He said to them, “What things?”
They said to Him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, powerful in deed and word before God and all the people, 20#Lk 23:13and how our chief priests and rulers handed Him over to be sentenced to death and crucified Him. 21#Lk 1:68; 2:38But we were hoping that it was He who was to redeem Israel. Moreover, today is the third day since these things happened. 22Even some women from among us, who arrived early at the tomb, surprised us. 23When they did not find His body, they returned saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. 24#Lk 24:12Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they did not see Him.”
25He said to them, “O fools! And slow of heart to believe what the prophets have spoken! 26#1Pe 1:11; Lk 24:46Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter His glory?” 27#Ge 3:15; Isa 7:14And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
28#Mk 6:48They drew near the village where they were traveling, and He seemed to be going farther. 29But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us. For it is nearly evening and the day is far spent.” So He went in to stay with them.
30#Mt 14:19; Lk 24:35As He sat at supper with them, He took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. 31#Lk 24:16; 4:30Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. And He vanished out of their sight. 32#Lk 24:45; Ps 39:3They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the way and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
33They rose up and returned to Jerusalem at once. And they found the eleven and those who were with them assembled together, 34#1Co 15:5saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35Then they reported what had happened on the way, and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
The Appearance to the Disciples
Mt 28:16–20; Mk 16:14–18; Jn 20:19–23; Ac 1:6–8
36#Mk 16:14; Jn 14:27As they were saying this, Jesus Himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be unto you.”
37They were terrified and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. 38He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39#Jn 20:27; 1Jn 1:1; Jn 20:20See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Feel Me and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
40When He said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41#Jn 21:5And while they yet disbelieved for joy and wondered, He said to them, “Do you have any food here?” 42They gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43#Ac 10:41And He took it and ate it before them.
44#Ps 72:1–20; 118:22He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and in the Psalms concerning Me.”
45#Ac 16:14; Job 33:16Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46#Lk 24:44He said to them, “Thus it is written, and accordingly it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47#Ac 5:31; Mt 28:19; Ac 2:38and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48#Ac 1:8; 2:32You are witnesses of these things. 49#Ac 1:4; Jn 14:26And look, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension
Mk 16:19–20; Ac 1:9–11
50#Ac 1:12; Mt 21:17Then He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51#2Ki 2:11; Mk 16:19While He blessed them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52#Mt 28:9; Jn 16:22Then they worshipped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.

Looking for the Living One in a Cemetery
1-3At the crack of dawn on Sunday, the women came to the tomb carrying the burial spices they had prepared. They found the entrance stone rolled back from the tomb, so they walked in. But once inside, they couldn’t find the body of the Master Jesus.
4-8They were puzzled, wondering what to make of this. Then, out of nowhere it seemed, two men, light cascading over them, stood there. The women were awestruck and bowed down in worship. The men said, “Why are you looking for the Living One in a cemetery? He is not here, but raised up. Remember how he told you when you were still back in Galilee that he had to be handed over to sinners, be killed on a cross, and in three days rise up?” Then they remembered Jesus’ words.
9-11They left the tomb and broke the news of all this to the Eleven and the rest. Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them kept telling these things to the apostles, but the apostles didn’t believe a word of it, thought they were making it all up.
12But Peter jumped to his feet and ran to the tomb. He stooped to look in and saw a few grave clothes, that’s all. He walked away puzzled, shaking his head.
The Road to Emmaus
13-16That same day two of them were walking to the village Emmaus, about seven miles out of Jerusalem. They were deep in conversation, going over all these things that had happened. In the middle of their talk and questions, Jesus came up and walked along with them. But they were not able to recognize who he was.
17-18He asked, “What’s this you’re discussing so intently as you walk along?”
They just stood there, long-faced, like they had lost their best friend. Then one of them, his name was Cleopas, said, “Are you the only one in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard what’s happened during the last few days?”
19-24He said, “What has happened?”
They said, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene. He was a man of God, a prophet, dynamic in work and word, blessed by both God and all the people. Then our high priests and leaders betrayed him, got him sentenced to death, and crucified him. And we had our hopes up that he was the One, the One about to deliver Israel. And it is now the third day since it happened. But now some of our women have completely confused us. Early this morning they were at the tomb and couldn’t find his body. They came back with the story that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive. Some of our friends went off to the tomb to check and found it empty just as the women said, but they didn’t see Jesus.”
25-27Then he said to them, “So thick-headed! So slow-hearted! Why can’t you simply believe all that the prophets said? Don’t you see that these things had to happen, that the Messiah had to suffer and only then enter into his glory?” Then he started at the beginning, with the Books of Moses, and went on through all the Prophets, pointing out everything in the Scriptures that referred to him.
28-31They came to the edge of the village where they were headed. He acted as if he were going on but they pressed him: “Stay and have supper with us. It’s nearly evening; the day is done.” So he went in with them. And here is what happened: He sat down at the table with them. Taking the bread, he blessed and broke and gave it to them. At that moment, open-eyed, wide-eyed, they recognized him. And then he disappeared.
32Back and forth they talked. “Didn’t we feel on fire as he conversed with us on the road, as he opened up the Scriptures for us?”
A Ghost Doesn’t Have Muscle and Bone
33-34They didn’t waste a minute. They were up and on their way back to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and their friends gathered together, talking away: “It’s really happened! The Master has been raised up—Simon saw him!”
35Then the two went over everything that happened on the road and how they recognized him when he broke the bread.
36-41a While they were saying all this, Jesus appeared to them and said, “Peace be with you.” They thought they were seeing a ghost and were scared half to death. He continued with them, “Don’t be upset, and don’t let all these doubting questions take over. Look at my hands; look at my feet—it’s really me. Touch me. Look me over from head to toe. A ghost doesn’t have muscle and bone like this.” As he said this, he showed them his hands and feet. They still couldn’t believe what they were seeing. It was too much; it seemed too good to be true.
41b-43 He asked, “Do you have any food here?” They gave him a piece of leftover fish they had cooked. He took it and ate it right before their eyes.
You’re the Witnesses
44Then he said, “Everything I told you while I was with you comes to this: All the things written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets, and in the Psalms have to be fulfilled.”
45-49He went on to open their understanding of the Word of God, showing them how to read their Bibles this way. He said, “You can see now how it is written that the Messiah suffers, rises from the dead on the third day, and then a total life-change through the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed in his name to all nations—starting from here, from Jerusalem! You’re the first to hear and see it. You’re the witnesses. What comes next is very important: I am sending what my Father promised to you, so stay here in the city until he arrives, until you’re equipped with power from on high.”
50-51He then led them out of the city over to Bethany. Raising his hands he blessed them, and while blessing them, made his exit, being carried up to heaven.
52-53And they were on their knees, worshiping him. They returned to Jerusalem bursting with joy. They spent all their time in the Temple praising God. Yes.
