Laws About Vows
1And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2#Nu 6:2; Dt 23:21–23Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: When a man makes a special vow to the Lord based on the equivalent value#Shorthand for the formula in Lev 5:15. of persons, 3#Ex 30:13; Lev 27:25then the equivalent value of a male from twenty to sixty years old shall be fifty shekels#About 11/4 pounds, or 575 grams; and in v. 16. of silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.#About 2/5 ounce, or 12 grams; and in v. 25. 4If the person is a female, then the equivalent value shall be thirty shekels.#About 12 ounces, or 345 grams. 5If the person is five to twenty years old, then the equivalent value shall be twenty shekels#About 8 ounces, or 230 grams. for a male and ten shekels#About 4 ounces, or 115 grams; and in v. 7. for a female. 6If the person is one month to five years old, then the equivalent value shall be five shekels#About 2 ounces, or 58 grams. for a male and three shekels#About 11/4 ounces, or 35 grams. of silver for a female. 7If the person is sixty years old or older, then the equivalent value shall be fifteen shekels#About 6 ounces, or 175 grams. for a male and ten shekels for a female. 8#Lev 14:21–22But if he is too poor to afford the equivalent value, then he shall present himself before the priest and the priest shall set his value. According to what the person making the vow can afford, so the priest shall set his value.
9And if it be an animal, of which men bring an offering to the Lord, all that any man gives of such to the Lord shall be holy. 10He shall not exchange it nor substitute it, good for bad or bad for good. If he in fact substitutes an animal for another, then both it and its substitute shall be holy. 11If it is any sort of unclean animal that is not permitted as an offering to the Lord, then he shall present the animal before the priest. 12And the priest shall set its value, whether good or bad; according to the equivalent value set by the priest, so shall it be. 13#Lev 27:15; 27:19But if he plans on redeeming it, then he shall add one-fifth to the equivalent value.
14When a man consecrates his house as holy to the Lord, then the priest shall set its value, whether good or bad, according to the equivalent value set by the priest, so shall it be established. 15#Lev 27:13If he who consecrates the house should redeem it, then he shall add one-fifth to its equivalent value, and it shall be his.
16If a man shall consecrate to the Lord some of his land, then the equivalent value shall be according to the seed needed to sow it: fifty shekels of silver per homer#Likely about 300 pounds, or 135 kilograms. of barley seed. 17If he consecrates his field from the Year of Jubilee, the equivalent value shall stay fixed, 18#Lev 25:15–16but if he consecrates his field after the Jubilee, then the priest shall calculate for him the price according to the years that remain until the next Year of Jubilee, and the equivalent value shall be reduced. 19And if he who consecrated the field plans on redeeming it, then he shall add one-fifth to the equivalent value, and it will be established as his. 20If he does not redeem the field, but rather sells the field to another man, it may not be redeemed again. 21#Eze 44:29; Nu 18:14; Lev 25:10But when the field is released in the Jubilee, it shall be holy to the Lord as a devoted field; it shall become the possession of the priest.
22#Lev 25:10; 25:25If a man consecrates to the Lord a field that he purchased, which is not part of his land property, 23#Lev 27:18then the priest shall calculate for him the amount of the valuation, up to the Year of Jubilee, and he shall give your valuation on that day as a holy thing to the Lord. 24#Lev 25:28In the Year of Jubilee the field shall return to the one from whom it was bought, to him to whom the property of land belongs. 25#Ex 30:13; Nu 3:47All your estimations shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary: Twenty gerahs#About 1/50 ounce or 0.6 gram. shall be one shekel.
26#Ex 13:2; 13:12–13A firstborn of animals, which as firstborn belongs to the Lord, no man may consecrate; whether ox or sheep, it is the Lord’s. 27If it is among the unclean animals, then he shall ransom it at the equivalent value and shall add one-fifth to it, but if it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold at the equivalent value.
28#Jos 6:17–19; Ex 22:20Anything that a man shall devote to the Lord from all that he has, whether human, animal, or land, shall not be sold or redeemed. Every devoted thing is most holy to the Lord.
29No one devoted of men, who shall be doomed to death, shall be redeemed; he shall surely be put to death.
30#Ge 28:22; 14:20Any tithe of the land, whether seed of the land or fruit of the trees, belongs to the Lord. It is holy to the Lord. 31If a man plans on redeeming some of his tithe, he shall add one-fifth to it. 32#Jer 33:13; Eze 20:37Any tithe of herd or flock, all that passes under the counting staff, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord. 33#Lev 27:10A person shall not differentiate between good or bad, nor shall he make a substitute for it, but if he does, then both it and its substitute shall be holy. It shall not be redeemed.
34#Lev 26:46These are the commandments that the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel on Mount Sinai.

Promises Are Important
1The Lord said to Moses, 2“Tell the people of Israel: ‘Someone might make a special promise to the Lord. He might promise to give himself or another person as a servant to the Lord. That person will then begin to serve the Lord in a special way. The priest must set a certain price for that person. That is the price that would have to be paid to free the person from his special promise to the Lord. 3The price for a man 20 to 60 years old is about 1¼ pounds of silver. (You must use the measure as set by the Holy Place.) 4The price for a woman 20 to 60 years old is about 12 ounces of silver. 5The price for a man 5 to 20 years old is about 8 ounces of silver. The price for a woman 5 to 20 years old is about 4 ounces of silver. 6The price for a baby boy 1 month to 5 years old is about 2 ounces of silver. For a baby girl the price is about 1½ ounces of silver. 7The price for a man 60 years old or older is about 6 ounces of silver. The price for a woman 60 years old or older is about 4 ounces of silver.
8“‘A person might be too poor to pay the price. If he is, bring him to the priest. The priest will decide how much money the person can afford to pay.
Gifts to the Lord
9“‘Some animals may be used as sacrifices to the Lord. If someone promises to bring one of these animals, it will become holy. 10That person must not try to put another animal in its place. He must not try to exchange it for something else. He must not try to exchange a good animal for a bad animal. And he must not exchange a bad animal for a good animal. If he tries to exchange animals, both animals will become holy.
11“‘Unclean animals cannot be offered as sacrifices to the Lord. Someone might bring one of them to the Lord. If he does, that animal must be brought to the priest. 12The priest will decide a price for the animal. The price will be according to whether the animal is good or bad. If the priest decides a price, that is the price for the animal. 13If the person wants to buy back the animal, he must add an additional one-fifth to the price.
Value of a House
14“‘A person might give his house as holy to the Lord. If he does, the priest must decide its value. The price will be according to whether the house is good or bad. If the priest decides a price, that is the price for the house. 15But the person who gives the house might want to buy it back. If he does, he must add an additional one-fifth to the price. Then the house will belong to him again.
Value of Land
16“‘A person might give part of his fields to the Lord. The value of those fields will depend on how much seed is needed to plant them. It will cost about one and one-fourth pounds of silver for each six bushels of barley seed needed. 17The person might give his field at the year of Jubilee. Then its value will be what the priest decides. 18But he might give his field after the Jubilee. If he does, the priest must decide the exact price. He must count the number of years to the next year of Jubilee. Then he will use that number to decide the exact price. 19The person who gave the field might want to buy it back. If he does, he must add one-fifth to that price. Then the field will belong to him again.
20“‘If he does not buy back the field, it will always belong to the priest. If it is sold to someone else, the first person cannot buy it back. 21But the person might not buy back the land. If he doesn’t, at the year of Jubilee, it will remain holy to the Lord. It will belong to the priest forever. It will become the property of the priests.
22“‘Someone may give a field he has bought to the Lord. But it may not be a part of his family land. 23If he gives a field, the priest must count the years to the next Jubilee. He must decide the price for the land. Then that land will belong to the Lord. 24At the year of Jubilee, the land will go back to its first owner. It will go back to the family who sold the land.
25“‘You must use the measure as set by the Holy Place in paying these prices. It weighs two-fifths of an ounce.
Value of Animals
26“‘People may give cattle and sheep to the Lord. But if an animal is the first one born to its parent, it already belongs to the Lord. So people may not give these animals again. 27If the animal is unclean, the person must buy it back. The priest will decide the price of the animal. And the person must add one-fifth to that price. If he does not buy it back, the priest must sell it. He will sell it for the price he had decided.
28“‘There is a special kind of gift that people give to the Lord. It may be a person, animal or field from the family property. That gift cannot be bought back or sold. It is most holy to the Lord.
29“‘If a person is given for the purpose of being destroyed, he cannot be bought back. He must be put to death.
30“‘One-tenth of all crops belongs to the Lord. This includes the crops from fields and the fruit from trees. That one-tenth belongs to the Lord. 31A person might want to get back his tenth. If he does, he must add one-fifth to its price and buy it back.
32“‘The priest will take every tenth animal from a person’s cattle or sheep. It will belong to the Lord. 33The owner should not pick out the good animals from the bad. He should not exchange one animal for another. If he does exchange it, both animals will become holy. They cannot be bought back.’”
34These are the commands the Lord commanded at Mount Sinai. They are for the people of Israel.
