The Eastern Tribes Return Home
1Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. 2#Jos 1:12–18He said to them, “You have done everything that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed me in everything that I have commanded you. 3You have not left your brothers these many days down to this day, and you have observed the obligations of the commandment of the Lord your God. 4#Jos 13:8Now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as He had said to them. So now, turn and go to your homes, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. 5#Dt 6:17; 11:22Only carefully obey the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to obey His commandments, to cling to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and soul.”
6#Jos 14:13; Ge 47:7Joshua blessed them and sent them off, and they went to their tents. 7#Jos 17:1–12Moses had assigned land in Bashan to half the tribe of Manasseh, and to the other half Joshua assigned land among their brothers on the west side of the Jordan. When Joshua sent them also to their homes and blessed them, 8#Nu 31:27; 1Sa 30:24he said, “Return home with great wealth, much livestock, silver, gold, copper, iron, and great quantities of clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies among your brothers.”
9#Nu 32:26; 32:29So the Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the children of Israel at Shiloh in the land of Canaan to go to the land of Gilead, the land of their possession, according to the word of the Lord through Moses.
10The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh came near the Jordan in the land of Canaan and built a very large altar by the Jordan. 11#Dt 13:12–14The children of Israel heard someone say, “The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar by the land of Canaan by the Jordan on the Israelite side.” 12When the children of Israel heard this, they assembled the whole congregation of the children of Israel at Shiloh to go up against them in war.
13#Nu 25:7; Ex 6:25Then the children of Israel sent Phinehas, son of Eleazar the priest, to the sons of Reuben, to the sons of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, 14#Nu 1:4and with him ten chiefs, one chief each for each father’s household of every tribe of Israel; and each one of them was the head of his father’s house among the thousands of Israel.
15They came to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead and said to them, 16“The whole congregation of the Lord says, ‘What is this trespass you have committed against the God of Israel? Today you have turned from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar to rebel against Him! 17Is the sin of Peor, from which we have still not purified ourselves even today, not enough for us, which brought a plague upon the congregation of the Lord 18#Nu 16:22; Jos 22:16that today you have turned away from following the Lord?
“ ‘If today you are rebelling against the Lord, then tomorrow He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel! 19#Jos 18:1If indeed your own land is unclean, then cross over to the land of the Lord where the tabernacle of the Lord stands and take land among us. Yet do not rebel against the Lord or rebel against us by building an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. 20#Jos 7:1; 7:5Did not Achan son of Zerah commit a trespass in the things under the ban, and wrath fall on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.’ ”
21Then the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered and said to the heads of the Israelite clans, 22#Dt 10:17; 1Ki 8:39“The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, He knows, and may Israel know—if we have acted in rebellion or disloyalty against the Lord, do not spare us today. 23#Dt 18:19; 1Sa 20:16If we have built an altar to turn away from following the Lord, to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings or make peace offerings upon it, may the Lord Himself demand an account.
24#Jos 4:6“We did this deed because we were worried that in the future your descendants might say, ‘What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel? 25The Lord made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, the descendants of Reuben and Gad. You have no share in the Lord!’ In this way your descendants might make our descendants to stop worshipping the Lord.
26“So we said to each other, ‘Let us build this altar, not for burnt offering or sacrifice, 27#Jos 24:27; Ge 31:48but as a witness for us, for you, and for the generations after us, that we may perform the service of the Lord before Him with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings, and in the future your descendants will not be able to say to our descendants, “You have no share in the Lord!” ’
28“Therefore we said, ‘In the future, if they say this to us or to our descendants, we will say, “Look at the replica of the altar of the Lord that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between you and us.” ’
29#Dt 12:13–14; Jos 24:16“God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord by turning from following the Lord today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, and sacrifices other than the altar of the Lord God that stands before His tabernacle!”
30#Jos 22:33When Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the Israelite clans who were with him heard what the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh said, it pleased them. 31#Lev 26:11–12; 2Ch 15:2Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst because you did not violate your obligations to the Lord in this matter. Indeed, you have delivered the children of Israel from the judgment of the Lord.”
32Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest and the leaders returned from meeting the descendants of Reuben and Gad in the land of Gilead to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan. They brought back a report. 33#1Ch 29:20; Da 2:19This report was good in the eyes of the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God. They decided not to make war against the descendants of Reuben and Gad to ruin the land in which they lived.
34#Jos 22:27The descendants of Reuben and Gad named the altar Witness, “For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”

The Eastern Tribes Return
1Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2and he said to them, “You have observed all that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, and you have listened#Or “you have obeyed” to my voice in all that I have commanded you; 3you have not forsaken your kinsmen#Or “brothers” these many days, up to this day, and you have observed the obligation of the command of Yahweh your God. 4So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,#Or “brothers” just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh’s servant gave to you beyond the Jordan. 5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and law that Moses Yahweh’s servant commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”#Or “inner self” 6And Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. 7And to the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession with their kinsmen#Or “brothers” beyond the Jordan to the west; and when Joshua sent them to their tents and blessed them, 8he said to them, “Return to your tents with much wealth, and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, copper, iron, and with very much clothing; divide the war-booty of your enemies with your kinsmen.”#Or “brothers” 9So the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home and departed with the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead to the land of their possession, which they had acquired according to the command of Yahweh#Literally “on the mouth of Yahweh” through the hand of Moses.
10And they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, and the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar on the Jordan, a large and imposing altar.#Literally “a large altar to appearance” 11And the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” heard it said that the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had built an altar next to the land of Canaan, in the region of the Jordan, on the side belonging to the Israelites.#Literally “sons/children of Israel” 12When the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” heard of it, the whole congregation of the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” gathered at Shiloh to go up against them for battle. 13And the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” sent to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, Phinehas the priest son of Eleazar, 14and ten leaders with him, one leader for each#Literally “one leader, one leader” family#Literally “of the house of father” from each of the tribes of Israel; and each one was the head of his family#Literally “house of their fathers” among the clans of Israel.#Or “thousands of Israel” 15They came to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying, 16“Thus says all the congregation of Yahweh: ‘What is this treachery that you have committed against the God of Israel by turning away today from following Yahweh, by building for yourselves an altar to rebel today against Yahweh? 17Is not the sin of Peor enough for us,#Literally “too little for us” from which we have not cleansed ourselves today, and for which a plague came to the congregation of Yahweh, 18that you must turn today from following Yahweh? If you rebel today against Yahweh, tomorrow he will be angry with all of the congregation of Israel; 19if, however, the land of your property is unclean, cross over to the land of Yahweh’s property, where Yahweh’s tabernacle resides,#Or “stands” and take possession among us. But you must not rebel against Yahweh or against us by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God. 20Did not Achan son of Zerah commit treachery with devoted things,#Or “consecrated possession” and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? And he alone#Literally “And he is one man that” did not perish because of his iniquity.’ ”
21And the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh spoke with the heads of the clans#Or “thousands” of Israel, 22“Yahweh, God of gods! Yahweh, God of gods knows. And let Israel itself know, if it was in rebellion or treachery against Yahweh, do not spare us this day 23for building for ourselves an altar to turn away from Yahweh, or if it was to offer burnt offerings,#Hebrew “offering” grain offerings,#Hebrew “offering” or fellowship offerings on it, may Yahweh himself take vengeance. 24But in fact, we have done this because of anxiety, because of a reason, saying, ‘In the future your children may say to our children, ‘What is the relationship between you and Yahweh the God of Israel?#Literally “What is to you and to Yahweh the God of Israel” 25Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad; you have no portion in Yahweh.’ So your children may put an end to our children worshiping#Or “seeing” Yahweh. 26So we said, ‘Let us build immediately for ourselves an altar, not for burnt offerings#Hebrew “offering” or for sacrifices;#Hebrew “sacrifice” 27instead, it is a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us for performing the serving of Yahweh in his presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and fellowship offerings; so that your children may not say in the future to our children, “You have no portion in Yahweh.” ’ 28And we thought, if they say to us and to our children in the future, we can say, ‘Look at this replica of the altar of Yahweh, which our ancestors#Or “fathers” made, not for burnt offerings#Hebrew “offering” or sacrifices;#Hebrew “sacrifice” rather, it is a witness between us and you.’ 29Far be it from us to rebel against Yahweh, to turn today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offerings,#Hebrew “offering” grain offerings,#Hebrew “offering” or sacrifices,#Hebrew “sacrifice” instead of the altar of Yahweh our God that is before his tabernacle.”
30Phinehas the priest, the leaders of the congregation, and the heads of the clans#Or “thousands” of Israel who were with him heard the words that the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh spoke, and they were satisfied.#Literally “it was good in their eyes” 31Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, said to the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against Yahweh. Therefore you have rescued the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” from the hand of Yahweh.”
32And Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, and the leaders returned from the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad, from the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan to the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” and they gave them their report.#Literally “they brought back a word to them” 33The report satisfied the Israelites;#Literally “The report was good in the eyes of the children of Israel” they blessed God, and they did not speak of going up for battle against them to destroy the land in which the descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad were living.#Or “dwelling” 34The descendants#Or “sons” of Reuben and Gad called the altar Witness, “Because,” they said, “it is a witness between us that Yahweh is God.”
