The Rekabites’ Obedience
1#2Ki 23:35; Jer 1:3The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: 2#1Ch 2:55; 9:26Go to the house of the Rekabites and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.
3Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rekabites, 4#Dt 33:1; 2Ki 12:9and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door. 5#Am 2:12Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rekabites pots full of wine and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.”
6#2Ki 10:15; Lev 10:9But they said, “We will drink no wine. For Jonadab the son of Rekab our father commanded us, saying, ‘You shall not drink wine, neither you nor your sons forever. 7#Ge 25:27; Ex 20:12You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor own one; but all your days you shall dwell in tents so that you may live many days in the land where you sojourn.’ 8#Col 3:20; Pr 1:8–9Thus we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rekab, our father, in all that he has charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters, 9#1Ti 6:6; Ps 37:16nor to build houses for us to dwell in; and we do not have vineyard, or field, or seed. 10But we have lived in tents only and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11#Jer 8:14; 2Ki 24:1–2But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem before the army of the Chaldeans and before the army of the Arameans.’ So we have dwelt in Jerusalem.”
12Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying: 13#Jer 5:3; 32:33Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will you not receive instruction by listening to My words? says the Lord. 14#Isa 30:9; Jer 7:13The words of Jonadab the son of Rekab, that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed. For to this day they drink none, but they obey their father’s commandment. However, I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you did not obey Me. 15#Jer 18:11; 25:5–6I also have sent to you all My servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, “Return now every man from his evil way and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and you will dwell in the land that I have given to you and to your fathers.” But you have not inclined your ear nor obeyed Me. 16#Mal 1:6; Jer 35:14Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rekab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me.
17#Isa 65:12; 66:4Therefore thus says the Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel: I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have pronounced against them; because I have spoken to them but they have not listened, and I have called them but they have not answered.
18#Ex 20:12; Eph 6:1–3Jeremiah said to the house of the Rekabites: Thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel: Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he has commanded you, 19#Jer 15:19; 1Ch 2:55therefore thus says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, Jonadab the son of Rekab shall not lack a man to stand before Me always.

The Obedient Rechabites
1The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2“Go to the house of the #2 Sam. 4:2; 2 Kin. 10:15; 1 Chr. 2:55Rechabites, speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of #1 Kin. 6:5, 8; 1 Chr. 9:26, 33the chambers, and give them wine to drink.”
3Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habazziniah, his brothers and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites, 4and I brought them into the house of the Lord, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, #2 Kin. 12:9; 25:18; 1 Chr. 9:18, 19the keeper of the door. 5Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites bowls full of wine, and cups; and I said to them, “Drink wine.”
6But they said, “We will drink no wine, for #2 Kin. 10:15, 23Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink #Lev. 10:9; Num. 6:2–4; Judg. 13:7, 14; Prov. 31:4; Ezek. 44:21; Luke 1:15no wine, you nor your sons, forever. 7You shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a vineyard, nor have any of these; but all your days you shall dwell in tents, #Ex. 20:12; Eph. 6:2, 3that you may live many days in the land where you are sojourners.’ 8Thus we have #(Prov. 1:8, 9; 4:1, 2, 10; 6:20; Eph. 6:1; Col. 3:20)obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, 9nor to build ourselves houses to dwell in; nor do we have vineyard, field, or seed. 10But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11But it came to pass, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, ‘Come, let us #Jer. 4:5–7; 8:14go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians.’ So we dwell at Jerusalem.”
12Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah, saying, 13“Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Will you not #(Is. 28:9–12); Jer. 6:10; 17:23; 32:33receive instruction to obey My words?” says the Lord. 14“The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are performed; for to this day they drink none, and obey their father’s commandment. #2 Chr. 36:15But although I have spoken to you, #Jer. 7:13; 25:3rising early and speaking, you did not obey Me. 15I have also sent to you all My #Jer. 26:4, 5; 29:19servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, #(Is. 1:16, 17); Jer. 18:11; 25:5, 6; (Ezek. 18:30–32); Acts 26:20‘Turn now everyone from his evil way, amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them; then you will #Jer. 7:7; 25:5, 6dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’ But you have not inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me. 16Surely the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their #(Heb. 12:9)father, which he commanded them, but this people has not obeyed Me.” ’
17“Therefore thus says the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will bring on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the doom that I have pronounced against them; #Prov. 1:24; Is. 65:12; 66:4; Jer. 7:13because I have spoken to them but they have not heard, and I have called to them but they have not answered.’ ”
18And Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Because you have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts and done according to all that he commanded you, 19therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not lack a man to #(Ex. 20:12); Jer. 15:19; (Luke 21:36; Eph. 6:2, 3)stand before Me forever.” ’ ”
