Isaiah 41

The Lord Helps Israel
1Keep silent before Me, # Hab 2:20; Zec 2:13 O islands,
and let the peoples renew their strength.
Let them come near, then let them speak;
let us come near together to judgment.
2Who raised up the righteous man from the east,
called him to His foot,
gave the nations before him,
and made him rule over kings? # Isa 45:1
He makes them as the dust with his sword,
and as driven stubble with his bow. # Isa 40:24
3He pursued them, and passed safely,
by paths his feet have not traveled.
4Who has performed and done this,
calling the generations from the beginning? # Isa 41:26
I, the Lord, am the first,
and with the last. I am He. # Isa 48:12
5The coastlands saw it and feared,
the ends of the earth were afraid; # Ps 67:7
they drew near and came.
6Every one helped his neighbor,
and every one said to his brother, “Be of good courage.”
7So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith,
and he who smooths metal with the hammer
encourages him who strikes the anvil,
saying, “It is ready for the soldering”;
and he fastened it with nails so that it should not totter. # Isa 40:19–20
8But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
the seed of Abraham, My friend. # 2Ch 20:7; Jas 2:23
9You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
and called from its remotest parts,
and said to you, “You are My servant;
I have chosen you and have not rejected you.”
10Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God. # Jos 1:9
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
yes, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. # Isa 41:13–14
11Behold, all those who were incensed against you
shall be ashamed and humiliated; # Ex 23:22; Isa 45:24
they shall be as nothing,
and those who strive with you shall perish.
12You shall seek them
and shall not find them, even those who contended with you.
Those who war against you
shall be as nothing, as a thing of nonexistence. # Job 20:7–9; Ps 37:35–36
13For I, the Lord your God,
will hold your right hand, # Isa 45:1
saying to you, “Do not fear;
I will help you.”
14Do not fear, you worm Jacob, # Ps 22:6
and you men of Israel.
I will help you, says the Lord
and your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. # Isa 43:14
15Behold, I will make you a new sharp threshing instrument # Mic 4:13; Hab 3:12
with double edges;
you shall thresh the mountains, and beat them small,
and shall make the hills as chaff.
16You shall fan them, and the wind shall carry them away,
and the whirlwind shall scatter them; # Jer 51:2
and you shall rejoice in the Lord,
and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.
17When the poor and needy seek water,
and there is none,
and their tongues fail for thirst,
I, the Lord, will hear them,
I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. # Isa 30:19; 42:16
18I will open rivers in high places,
and fountains in the midst of the valleys;
I will make the wilderness a pool of water,
and the dry land springs of water. # Ps 107:35; Isa 30:25
19I will plant in the wilderness
the cedar, the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive tree;
I will set in the desert
the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together, # Isa 55:13; 60:13
20that they may see, and know,
and consider, and understand together,
that the hand of the Lord has done this, # Job 12:9
and the Holy One of Israel has created it.
The Futility of Idols
21Present your case, says the Lord.
Bring forth your arguments, says the King of Jacob.
22Let them bring them forth, and show us
what shall happen;
let them show the former things, what they were,
that we may consider them
and know their outcome,
or declare to us things to come. # Isa 45:21; 46:10
23Show the things that are to come hereafter, # Isa 42:9; 44:7–8
that we may know that you are gods;
do good, or do evil,
that we may be dismayed and see it together.
24Behold, you are nothing,
and your work amounts to nothing;
he who chooses you is an abomination. # Ps 115:8; 1Co 8:4
25I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come;
from the rising of the sun he shall call on My name;
and he shall come on princes as on mortar,
and as the potter treads clay. # 2Sa 22:43; Isa 41:2
26Who has declared from the beginning, that we may know?
And from former times, that we may say, “He is right!”? # Isa 41:22; 44:7
There is no one who shows,
no one who declares,
no one who hears your words.
27Formerly I said to Zion, “Behold, here they are!”
and to Jerusalem, “I will give one who brings good news.” # Isa 40:9; 52:7
28But when I look, there is no man, # Isa 63:5
even among them there is no counselor
who, when I ask of them, could answer a word.
29Behold, they all are vanity;
their works are nothing; # Isa 41:24
their molded images are wind and emptiness. # Jer 5:13

Isaiah 41
41
1Keep silence before me, islands; and let the peoples renew their strength: let them come near; then let them speak: let us draw near together to judgment. 2Who raised up from the east him whom righteousness calleth to its foot? He gave the nations before him, and caused him to have dominion over kings; he gave them as dust to his sword, as driven stubble to his bow. 3He pursued them, he passed on in safety, by a way he had never come with his feet. 4Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I, Jehovah, the first; and with the last, I am HE. 5The isles saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth trembled: they drew near, and came. 6They helped every one his neighbour, and each said to his brother, Take courage. 7And the artizan encouraged the founder, he that smootheth with the hammer him that smiteth on the anvil, saying of the soldering, It is good; and he fasteneth it with nails, that it be not moved. 8But thou, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, my friend 9— thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from the extremities thereof, and to whom I said, Thou art my servant, I have chosen thee and not rejected thee,
10— Fear not, for I am with thee; be not dismayed, for I am thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee, yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. 11Lo, all that are incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded; they that strive with thee shall be as nothing, and shall perish. 12Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them — them that contend with thee; they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. 13For I, Jehovah, thy God#GodHebrew: Elohim hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. 14Fear not, thou worm Jacob, ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith Jehovah, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. 15Behold, I have made of thee a new sharp threshing instrument having double teeth: thou shalt thresh and beat small the mountains, and shalt make the hills as chaff; 16thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them; and thou shalt rejoice in Jehovah, thou shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel. 17The afflicted and the needy seek water, and there is none; their tongue faileth for thirst: I, Jehovah, will answer them, I, the God#GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, will not forsake them. 18I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness into a pool of water, and the dry land into water-springs. 19I will give in the wilderness the cedar, acacia, myrtle, and oleaster; I will set in the desert the cypress, pine, and box-tree together; 20that they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of Jehovah hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.
21Produce your cause, saith Jehovah; bring forward your arguments, saith the King of Jacob. 22Let them bring them forward, and declare to us what shall happen: shew the former things, what they are, that we may give attention to them, and know the end of them; — or let us hear things to come: 23declare the things that are to happen hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods; yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be astonished, and behold it together. 24Behold, ye are less than nothing, and your work is of nought; an abomination is he that chooseth you. ... 25I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come, — from the rising of the sun, he who will call upon my name; and he shall come upon princes as on mortar, and as the potter treadeth clay. 26Who hath declared it from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, It is right? Indeed, there is none that declareth; no, none that sheweth; no, none that heareth your words. 27The first, I said to Zion, Behold, behold them! and to Jerusalem, I will give one that bringeth glad tidings. 28And I beheld, and there was no man; even among them, — and there was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word. 29Behold, they are all vanity, their works are nought, their molten images are wind and emptiness.
