Isaiah 31
31
Woe to Those Who Trust Egypt
1Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, # Dt 17:16
and rely on horses,
and trust in chariots because they are many,
and in horsemen because they are very strong,
but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel # Ps 20:7
nor seek the Lord!
2Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster
and will not call back His words, # Nu 23:19; Isa 45:7
but will arise against the house of the evildoers
and against the help of those who work iniquity.
3Now the Egyptians are men and not God; # Eze 28:9
and their horses flesh and not spirit.
When the Lord shall stretch out His hand, # Isa 9:17
both he who helps shall fall
and he who is helped shall fall down,
and they all shall fail together.
4For thus the Lord has spoken to me:
Like the lion, and the young lion,
roars over his prey, # Hos 11:10; Am 3:8
against which a multitude of shepherds
is called out against him,
he will not be afraid of their voice,
nor disturbed at their noise,
so shall the Lord of Hosts come down
to fight for Mount Zion, and for its hill. # Isa 42:13
5Like flying birds,
so the Lord of Hosts will defend Jerusalem. # Dt 32:11; Ps 91:4
He will defend and deliver it;
He will pass over and preserve it.
6Turn to Him whom you have deeply betrayed, # Isa 55:7; Jer 3:10 O sons of Israel. 7For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold which your own hands have made for you as a sin. # Isa 2:20; 30:22
8“Then the Assyrian shall fall by the sword that is not of man, # Isa 14:25
and the sword not of man shall devour him.
So he shall not escape the sword,
and his young men shall become forced laborers. # Ge 49:15
9He shall cross over to his stronghold for fear,
and his princes shall be afraid of the banner,” # Isa 18:3
says the Lord,
whose fire is in Zion,
and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 31
31
The LORD, Not the Egyptians, Will Protect His People from Assyria
1How horrible it will be for those
who go to Egypt for help,
who rely on horses,
who depend on many chariots,
who depend on very strong war horses.
They don’t look to the Holy One of Israel.
They don’t seek the Lord.
2He is wise and can bring about disaster.
He doesn’t take back his words.
He rises against wicked people
and against those who help troublemakers.
3The Egyptians are humans, not gods.
Their horses are flesh and blood, not spirit.
When the Lord uses his powerful hand,
the one who gives help will stumble,
and the one who receives help will fall.
Both will die together.
4This is what the Lord said to me:
A lion, even a young lion, growls over its prey
when a crowd of shepherds is called to fight it.
It isn’t frightened by their voices
or disturbed by the noise they make.
So the Lord of Armies will come to fight for
Mount Zion and its hill.
5The Lord of Armies will defend Jerusalem like a hovering bird.
He will defend it and rescue it.
He will pass over it and protect it.
6You people of Israel, return to the one
whom you have so violently rebelled against.
7When that day comes, all of you will reject
the silver and gold idols
that your sinful hands have made.
8Then Assyrians will be killed with swords not made by human hands.
Swords not made by human hands will destroy them.
They will flee from battle,
and their young men will be made to do forced labor.
9In terror they will run to their stronghold,
and their officers will be frightened at ⌞the sight of⌟ the battle flag.
The Lord declares this. His fire is in Zion and his furnace is in Jerusalem.
