Man’s Wickedness
1When men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, # Ge 1:28 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair and took as wives any they chose. 3The Lord said, “My Spirit will not always strive with man, for he is flesh; # Ps 78:39 yet his days will be one hundred and twenty years.”
4The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. # Nu 13:33; Dt 3:11; 2Pe 2:4–5; Jude 6–7
5The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was continually only evil. # Ge 8:21; Jer 17:9; Mt 15:19 6The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, # 1Sa 15:11; Isa 63:10 and it grieved Him in His heart. 7So the Lord said, “I will destroy man, whom I have created, from the face of the earth—both man and beast, and the creeping things, and the birds of the sky, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. # Ge 19:19; Lk 1:30
Noah and the Flood
9These are the generations of Noah.
Noah was a just man and blameless among his contemporaries. Noah walked with God. # Lk 1:6; 2Pe 2:5 10Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. # Ge 5:32
11The earth was corrupt before God and filled with violence. # Eze 8:17 12And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth. # Job 22:15–17; Ps 14:1–3 13So God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh is come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14Make an ark of cypress wood for yourself. Make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. # Ex 2:3; 1Pe 3:20 15And this is how you must make it: The length of the ark will be three hundred cubits, the width of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. # 6:15 About 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high; or 135 meters long, 23 meters wide, and 14 meters high. 16Make an opening # 6:16 Or roof. one cubit # 6:16 About 18 inches, or 45 centimeters. below the top of the ark all around; and you must set the door of the ark on the side. Make it with a lower, a second, and a third story. 17For behold, I will bring a flood of waters on the earth to destroy all flesh, wherever there is the breath of life under heaven, and everything that is on the earth will die. # Ge 7:4, 21–23; 2Pe 2:5 18But I will establish My covenant with you; you must go into the ark—you, and your sons, and your wife, and your sons’ wives with you. # Ge 7:1, 7 19Bring every living thing of all flesh, two of every kind, into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. 20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal, and of every kind of creeping thing of the earth will come to you to be kept alive. 21Also, take with you of every kind of food that is eaten and gather it to yourself, and it will be for food for you and for them.” # Ge 1:29–30
22Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him. # Ge 7:5, 9

The Lord Will Send a Flood
1-2 #
Job 1.6; 2.1. More and more people were born, until finally they spread all over the earth. Some of their daughters were so beautiful that supernatural beings#6.1,2 supernatural beings: Or “angels.” came down and married the ones they wanted. 3Then the Lord said, “I won't let my life-giving breath remain in anyone forever.#6.3 I won't … forever: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. No one will live for more than 120 years.”#6.3 No one … years: Or “In fact, they will all be destroyed in about 100 years” (that is, at the time of the flood).

Nu 13.33; Si 16.7; Ba 3.26. #3 Macc 2.4. The children of the supernatural beings who had married these women became famous heroes and warriors. They were called Nephilim and lived on the earth at that time and even later.

Mt 24.37; Lk 17.26; 1 P 3.20. The Lord saw how bad the people on earth were and that everything they thought and planned was evil. 6He was sorry that he had made them, 7and he said, “I'm going to destroy every person on earth! I'll even wipe out animals, birds, and reptiles. I'm sorry I ever made them.”
8But the Lord was pleased with Noah, 9#Si 44.17,18; 2 P 2.5. and this is the story about him. Noah was the only person who lived right and obeyed God. 10He had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
11-12God knew that everyone was terribly cruel and violent. 13So he told Noah:
Cruelty and violence have spread everywhere. Now I'm going to destroy the whole earth and all its people. 14Get some good lumber and build a boat. Put rooms in it and cover it with tar inside and out. 15Make it 133 meters long, 22 meters wide, and 13 meters high. 16Build a roof#6.16 roof: Or “window.” on the boat and leave a space of about 44 centimeters between the roof and the sides.#6.16 leave … sides: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text. Make the boat three stories high and put a door on one side.
17I'm going to send a flood that will destroy everything that breathes! Nothing will be left alive. 18But I solemnly promise that you, your wife, your sons, and your daughters-in-law will be kept safe in the boat.#6.18 boat: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text of verse 18.
19-20Take into the boat with you a male and a female of every kind of animal and bird, as well as a male and a female of every reptile. I don't want them to be destroyed. 21Store up enough food both for yourself and for them.
