Acts 5
5
Ananias and Sapphira
1Now a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property. 2He kept back part of the proceeds with his wife’s knowledge, # Jos 7:1 and brought a part of it and placed it at the apostles’ feet. # Ac 4:37
3Then Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart # Jn 13:2, 27 to deceive the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the proceeds of the land? 4While it remained unsold, was it not your own? And when it was sold, was it not under your authority? Why have you conceived this deed in your heart? You did not lie to men, but to God.” # Jos 7:19
5On hearing these words, Ananias fell down and died. And great fear came on all those who heard these things. # Ac 2:43; 5:10–11 6The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. # Jn 19:40
7About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for this amount?”
She said, “Yes, for that much.”
9Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? # Ac 5:3–4; 1Co 10:9 Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
10At once she fell down at his feet and died. Upon entering, the young men found her dead and carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11Great fear came on the entire church and on all those who heard these things. # Ac 5:5; 19:17
Signs and Wonders
12Many signs and wonders were performed among the people by the hands of the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Porch. # Jn 10:23; Ac 3:11 13No one else dared join them, but the people respected them. # Ac 2:47; 4:21 14Believers were increasingly added to the Lord, crowds of both men and women, # Ac 2:47 15so that they even brought the sick out into the streets and placed them on beds and mats, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might touch some of them. # Mt 14:36 16Crowds also came out of the cities surrounding Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were afflicted by evil spirits, and they were all healed. # Mk 16:17–18
Persecution of the Apostles
17Then the high priest and all those who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees) rose up and were filled with jealousy. # Ac 7:9; 13:45 18They seized the apostles and put them in the common prison. # Lk 21:12; Ac 4:3 19But during the night an angel of the Lord # Ac 8:26 opened the prison doors and led them out, # Ac 16:26 and said, 20“Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.” # Jn 6:63, 68
21Having heard this, they entered the temple at dawn and taught. # Jn 8:2
But the high priest and those who were with him came and called together the Sanhedrin and the senate of all the Israelites, and sent to the prison to have them brought out. 22But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, 23“We found the prison securely shut and the guards standing outside before the doors. But when we opened it, we found no one inside.” 24Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, # Ac 4:1; 5:26 they were in doubt of what might become of this.
25Then one came and told them, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” 26Then the captain with his escorts went and brought them, without force lest they should be stoned, for they feared the people. # Ac 4:21; 5:13
27When they had brought them, they stood them before the Sanhedrin. And the high priest questioned them, 28saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? Yet now you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring on us this Man’s blood.” # Mt 27:25
29Peter and the other apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. # Ac 4:19 30The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging on a tree. # Ac 10:39; Gal 3:13 31God exalted this Man to His right hand # Ac 2:33 to be a Ruler and a Savior, # Lk 2:11 to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. # Lk 24:47 32We are His witnesses to these words, # Jn 15:26–27 as is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” # Ac 2:4
33When they heard this, they were cut to the heart with rage # Ac 2:37; 7:54 and took counsel to kill them. 34But a Pharisee in the Sanhedrin named Gamaliel, # Ac 22:3 a teacher of the law honored by all the people, stood and ordered the apostles to be put outside for a little while. 35Then he said to them, “Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do concerning these men. 36For in previous days Theudas rose up, boasting to be somebody, # Ac 8:9; 21:38 to whom a number of about four hundred men joined themselves. He was killed, and all who obeyed him were dispersed and came to nothing. 37After Theudas, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census # Lk 2:1–2 and drew away many people after him. This man also perished, and all who obeyed him were scattered. 38Now I tell you, keep away from these men and leave them alone, because if this intention or this activity is of men, it will come to nothing. # La 3:37; Mt 15:13 39But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them, lest perhaps you be found even fighting against God.” # Pr 21:30; Ac 7:51
40They agreed with him. When they had called in the apostles, they beat them, # Mt 10:17; Mk 13:9 and commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
41Then they departed from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. # Jn 15:21 42Daily, in the temple and from house to house, # Ac 2:46 they did not cease to teach and preach Jesus Christ. # Ac 8:35

Ma`asei (Acts) 5
5
1But a certain man named Ḥananyah, with Shappirah his wife, sold a possession.
2And he kept back from the price, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the feet of the emissaries.
3But Kĕpha said, “Ḥananyah, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Set-apart Spirit and keep back from the price of the land for yourself?
4While it remained, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your authority? Why have you conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to Elohim.
5Then Ḥananyah, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all those who heard of this.
6But the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out and buried him.
7And it came to be, about three hours later, that his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place.
8And Kĕpha responded to her, “Say to me whether you sold the land for so much?” And she said, “Yes, for so much.”
9So Kĕpha said to her, “Why have you agreed to try the Spirit of יהוה? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out.”
10And immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, they buried her beside her husband.
11And great fear came upon all the assembly and upon all who heard of this.
12And through the hands of the emissaries many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one mind in Shelomoh’s Porch.
13But of the rest no one had the courage to join them, however, the people made much of them.
14And more believers were added to the Master, large numbers of both men and women,
15so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Kĕpha, passing by, might fall on some of them.
16A large number also gathered from the surrounding cities to Yerushalayim, bringing sick ones and those who were troubled by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
17But the high priest rose up, and all those with him, which is the sect of the Sadducees, and they were filled with jealousy,
18and seized the emissaries and put them in the public jail.
19But a messenger of יהוה opened the prison doors at night and brought them out, and said,
20Go and stand in the Set-apart Place and speak to the people all the words of this life.
21Now when they heard, they went into the Set-apart Place early in the morning, and were teaching. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Yisra’ĕl, and sent to the prison for them to be brought.
22But having come, the officers did not find them in the prison, and they went back and reported it,
23saying, “We found the prison shut in all safety, and the watches standing outside before the doors. But having opened them, we found no one inside!”
24And as the high priest and the captain of the Set-apart Place and the chief priests heard these words, they were puzzled and wondered what this might be.
25But one came and reported to them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the Set-apart Place and teaching the people!”
26Then the captain went with the officers and brought them, not with force, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.
27And having brought them, they set them before the council and the high priest asked them,
28saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this Name? And look, you have filled Yerushalayim with your teaching, and intend to bring the blood of this Man upon us!”
29And Kĕpha and the other emissaries answering, said, “We have to obey Elohim rather than men.#See Acts 4:19
30“The Elohim of our fathers# Exo.3:15 raised up יהושע whom you laid hands on, hanging Him on a timber.# Deu. 21:22, 23
31Him, a Prince#See Acts 3:15 and a Saviour, Elohim has exalted to His right hand,# Psa. 110:1 to give repentance to Yisra’ĕl and forgiveness of sins.
32And we are His witnesses to these matters, and so also is the Set-apart Spirit whom Elohim has given to those who obey Him.”#See 1John 3:24
33And those hearing were cut to the heart, and took counsel to kill them.
34But a certain one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamli’ĕl, a teacher of the Torah, respected by all the people, and ordered them to put the emissaries outside for a little while,
35and said to them, “Men of Yisra’ĕl, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do to these men.
36“For before these days Toḏah rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, did join him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were dispersed, and came to naught.
37“After him, Yehuḏah of Galil rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were scattered.
38“And now I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this work is of men, it shall be overthrown,
39“but if it is of Elohim, you are unable to overthrow it, lest you even be found to fight against Elohim.
40And they heeded his advice, and having called for the emissaries, beating them, they commanded that they should not speak in the Name of יהושע, and let them go.
41Then indeed they went rejoicing from the presence of the council, because they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name.
42And daily in the Set-apart Place, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and bringing the Good News: יהושע the Messiah!
