The Ark Brought to Jerusalem
1Ch 13:1–14; 15:25–16:3
1Again David gathered all of the chosen men in Israel, thirty thousand. 2#1Sa 4:4; 7:1David and all of the people who were with him arose and went from Baalah of Judah to bring up the ark of God, so named for the name of the Lord of Hosts who sits enthroned among the cherubim that are upon it. 3#1Sa 6:7They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio the sons of Abinadab were driving the new cart. 4#1Ch 13:7They brought it with the ark of God from the house of Abinadab on the hill, and Ahio was walking in front of the ark. 5#1Ch 13:8; Ps 150:3–5Meanwhile, David and the entire house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all sorts of instruments made of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.
6#Nu 4:15; 1Ch 13:9When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen had stumbled. 7#1Sa 6:19; 1Ch 15:13The Lord became angry against Uzzah, and God struck him down on the spot for his irreverence. He died there beside the ark of God.
8David became angry because of the outburst of the Lord against Uzzah; that place is called Perez Uzzah to this day.
9#Ps 119:120David feared the Lord that day, and he thought, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 10#1Ch 26:4–8So David did not allow the ark of the Lord to be brought to him in the City of David. Instead, David redirected it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11#Ge 30:27; 39:5The ark of the Lord remained at the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and his entire household.
12#1Ki 8:1When it was reported to King David, “The Lord has blessed Obed-Edom and everything that belongs to him, for the sake of the ark of God,” David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13#1Ki 8:5; Nu 4:15When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, David would sacrifice an ox and a fattened steer. 14#Ex 15:20; 1Sa 2:18David danced before the Lord with all of his might, and he wore a linen ephod. 15So David and the whole house of Israel escorted the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the horn.
16#1Ch 15:29; 2Sa 3:14When the ark of the Lord entered the City of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked down from the window, and upon seeing King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she thought contemptuously of him in her mind.
17#1Ch 15:1; 2Ch 1:4They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 18#1Ki 8:55When David had finished offering the burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people before the Lord of Hosts. 19#Ne 8:10He distributed to all of the people, the entire multitude of Israel, both men and women, one bread cake, one date cake, and one raisin cake to each one. Then all of the people left, each to his house.
20#2Sa 6:16; 6:14; Jdg 9:4David returned to bless his household, but Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet him. She said, “How the king of Israel has dignified himself today, exposing himself this day in the sight of his servant’s slave girls like one of the rabble might shamelessly expose himself.”
21#1Sa 13:14; 15:28Then David responded to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me over your father and over everyone in his household, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. I was celebrating before the Lord. 22I will humble myself even more than this and be abased in my own eyes. But by the maidservants, of whom you have spoken, I will be held in honor.”
23#Mt 1:25Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.

The Ark Is Brought to Jerusalem
1David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel—thirty thousand of them. 2Then he and all his people went to Baalah in Judah to bring back the Ark of God. The Ark is called by the Name, the name of the Lord All-Powerful, whose throne is between the gold creatures with wings. 3They put the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of Abinadab’s house on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, led the new cart 4which had the Ark of God on it. Ahio was walking in front of it. 5David and all the Israelites were celebrating in the presence of the Lord. They were playing wooden instruments: lyres, harps, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals.
6When David’s men came to the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled. So Uzzah reached out to steady the Ark of God. 7The Lord was angry with Uzzah and killed him because of what he did. So Uzzah died there beside the Ark of God. 8David was angry because the Lord had killed Uzzah. Now that place is called the Punishment of Uzzah.
9David was afraid of the Lord that day, and he said, “How can the Ark of the Lord come to me now?” 10So David would not move the Ark of the Lord to be with him in Jerusalem. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom, a man from Gath. 11The Ark of the Lord stayed in Obed-Edom’s house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his family.
12The people told David, “The Lord has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because the Ark of God is there.” So David went and brought it up from Obed-Edom’s house to Jerusalem with joy. 13When the men carrying the Ark of the Lord had walked six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fat calf. 14Then David danced with all his might before the Lord. He had on a holy linen vest. 15David and all the Israelites shouted with joy and blew the trumpets as they brought the Ark of the Lord to the city.
16As the Ark of the Lord came into the city, Saul’s daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw David jumping and dancing in the presence of the Lord, she hated him.
17David put up a tent for the Ark of the Lord, and then the Israelites put it in its place inside the tent. David offered whole burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18When David finished offering the whole burnt offerings and the fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord All-Powerful. 19David gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates, and a cake of raisins to every Israelite, both men and women. Then all the people went home.
20David went back to bless the people in his home, but Saul’s daughter Michal came out to meet him. She said, “With what honor the king of Israel acted today! You took off your clothes in front of the servant girls of your officers like one who takes off his clothes without shame!”
21Then David said to Michal, “I did it in the presence of the Lord. The Lord chose me, not your father or anyone from Saul’s family. The Lord appointed me to be over Israel. So I will celebrate in the presence of the Lord. 22Maybe I will lose even more honor, and maybe I will be brought down in my own opinion, but the girls you talk about will honor me!”
23And Saul’s daughter Michal had no children to the day she died.
