Paul Defends His Ministry
1#Mt 11:29; 2Co 10:10Now I, Paul, who am lowly in presence among you but bold toward you while absent, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. 2#2Co 13:2; 13:10I beg you that when I am present, I might not have to be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4#Jer 1:10; 2Co 6:7For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, 5#Isa 2:11–12; 1Co 1:19casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6#2Co 2:9; 7:15and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is complete.
7#2Co 5:12; Jn 7:24; 1Co 14:37Do you look at things from the outward appearance? If any man trusts that he is Christ’s, let him consider again that, as he is Christ’s, even so are we Christ’s. 8#2Co 13:10For even if I should boast somewhat more of our authority, which the Lord has given us for edification and not for your destruction, I shall not be ashamed, 9lest I appear to frighten you by my letters. 10#1Co 1:17; 2Co 11:6“For his letters,” they say, “are weighty and powerful, but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.” 11Let such a person consider this: that as we are in word by letters when we are absent, we will also be in deed when we are present.
12#2Co 3:1; Pr 26:12For we dare not count or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. They who measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another are not wise. 13#Ro 15:20But we will not boast beyond measure, but within the boundaries which God has appointed us, which reach even you. 14#1Co 4:15For we are not overextending ourselves as though we did not reach you, since we have come to you, preaching the gospel of Christ. 15#Ro 15:20; 2Co 10:13We are not boasting of things beyond our measure in other men’s labors. But we have hope that when your faith is increased, our region shall be greatly enlarged by you, 16to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you and not to boast in another man’s accomplishments. 17#1Co 1:31; Jer 9:23–24But, “Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.”#Jer 9:24. 18#Ro 2:29; 1Co 4:5For it is not he who commends himself who is approved, but he whom the Lord commends.

Tearing Down Strongholds
1Now I, Paul, appeal myself to you by the meekness and gentleness of Messiah—I who am humble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when far away.
2I beg of you that when I am present I won’t need to be bold with the courage I consider showing against some who judge us as walking in the flesh.
3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not wage war according to the flesh.
4For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful through God for the tearing down of strongholds. We are tearing down false arguments
5and every high-minded thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Messiah—
6ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.
7Look at what is before your eyes. If anyone is confident in himself that he belongs to Messiah, let him reconsider that just as he belongs to Messiah, so also do we.
8For even if I boast a little more about our authority—which the Lord gave for building you up and not for tearing you down—I will not be put to shame.
9Not that I would try to terrify you by my letters—
10for they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but his presence in person is weak and his speech of no account.”
11Let such a person consider this, that what we are in word through letters when we are absent, we also are in action when we are present.
12For we do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they have no understanding.
13But we will not boast beyond limits, but within the limits of the area that God has assigned to us—to reach even as far as you.
14We are not extending ourselves too far, as if we did not reach you—for we did come even as far as to you with the Good News of Messiah.
15Neither are we boasting beyond limits based on the labors of others, but we have hope while your faith is growing for our area among you to be greatly enlarged—
16so that we may proclaim the Good News even to regions beyond you, not boasting about what has been accomplished in another’s area.
17But “let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
18For it Is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
