The House of Saul, Dead and Buried
2Sa 1:4–12; 1Ch 10:1–12
1#1Sa 28:4; 1Ch 10:1–12Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and Israel’s fighting men fled before the Philistines and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2#1Ch 8:33; 1Sa 14:49The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed his sons, Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malki-Shua, Saul’s sons. 3#2Sa 1:6The battle was heavy against Saul. The archers found him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
4#Jdg 9:54; 1Sa 14:6Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and abuse me.”
But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell upon it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him. 6So Saul died with his three sons and his armor bearer, together with all his men on that same day.
7When Israel’s fighting men who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that Israel’s fighting men fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled. So the Philistines came and lived in them.
8The following day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9#2Sa 1:20; Jdg 16:23–24They cut off his head, stripped off his armor, and sent them into the land of the Philistines round about, to make it known in the house of their idols and among their people. 10#Jos 17:11; Jdg 2:13They put his armor in the house of Ashtoreth, and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.
11When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12#2Ch 16:14; 2Sa 2:4–7all the valiant men arose and went all night, and they took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan, and they came to Jabesh and burned them there. 13#Ge 50:10; 2Sa 21:12–14Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they mourned, fasting seven days.

1 Kings 31
31
1And the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gelboe.
2And the Philistines fell upon Saul, and upon his sons: and they slew Jonathan, and Abinadab and Melchisua the sons of Saul.
3And the whole weight of the battle was turned upon Saul: and the archers overtook him. And he was grievously wounded by the archers.
4Then Saul said to his armourbearer: Draw thy sword, and kill me: lest these uncircumcised come, and slay me, and mock at me. And his armourbearer would not: for he was struck with exceeding great fear. Then Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.
5And when his armourbearer saw this, to wit, that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died with him.
6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men that same day together.
7And the men of Israel, that were beyond the valley, and beyond the Jordan, seeing that the Israelites were fled, and that Saul was dead, and his sons, forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines came, and dwelt there.
8And on the morrow the Philistines came to strip the slain: and they found Saul and his three sons lying in mount Gelboe.
9And they cut off Saul's head, and stripped him of his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the temples of their idols, and among their people.
10And they put his armour in the temple of Astaroth: but his body they hung on the wall of Bethsan.
11Now when the inhabitants of Jabes Galaad had heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul,
12All the most valiant men arose, and walked all the night, and took the body of Saul, and the bodies of his sons, from the wall of Bethsan. And they came to Jabes Galaad, and burnt them there.
13And they took their bones and buried them in the wood of Jabes: and fasted seven days.
