Zechariah 13

A Fountain of Cleansing

1“On that day a fountain will be opened for the dynasty of David and for the people of Jerusalem, a fountain to cleanse them from all their sins and impurity.

2“And on that day,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will erase idol worship throughout the land, so that even the names of the idols will be forgotten. I will remove from the land both the false prophets and the spirit of impurity that came with them. 3If anyone continues to prophesy, his own father and mother will tell him, ‘You must die, for you have prophesied lies in the name of the Lord.’ And as he prophesies, his own father and mother will stab him.

4“On that day people will be ashamed to claim the prophetic gift. No one will pretend to be a prophet by wearing prophet’s clothes. 5He will say, ‘I’m no prophet; I’m a farmer. I began working for a farmer as a boy.’ 6And if someone asks, ‘Then what about those wounds on your chest?#13:6 Hebrew wounds between your hands?’ he will say, ‘I was wounded at my friends’ house!’

The Scattering of the Sheep

7“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,

the man who is my partner,”

says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“Strike down the shepherd,

and the sheep will be scattered,

and I will turn against the lambs.

8Two-thirds of the people in the land

will be cut off and die,” says the Lord.

“But one-third will be left in the land.

9I will bring that group through the fire

and make them pure.

I will refine them like silver

and purify them like gold.

They will call on my name,

and I will answer them.

I will say, ‘These are my people,’

and they will say, ‘The Lord is our God.’”

Idolatry Cut Off

1“In that #Acts 10:43; (Rev. 21:6, 7)day #Ps. 36:9; (Heb. 9:14; 1 John 1:7)a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for #Num. 19:17; Is. 4:4; Ezek. 36:25uncleanness.

2“It shall be in that day,” says the Lord of hosts, “that I will #Ex. 23:13; Hos. 2:17cut off the names of the idols from the land, and they shall no longer be remembered. I will also cause #Jer. 23:14, 15; 2 Pet. 2:1the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land. 3It shall come to pass that if anyone still prophesies, then his father and mother who begot him will say to him, ‘You shall #Deut. 18:20; (Ezek. 14:9)not live, because you have spoken lies in the name of the Lord.’ And his father and mother who begot him #Deut. 13:6–11; (Matt. 10:37)shall thrust him through when he prophesies.

4“And it shall be in that day that #Jer. 6:15; 8:9; (Mic. 3:6, 7)every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies; they will not wear #2 Kin. 1:8; Is. 20:2; Matt. 3:4a robe of coarse hair to deceive. 5#Amos 7:14But he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a farmer; for a man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.’ 6And one will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your arms?’ Then he will answer, ‘Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends.’

The Shepherd Savior

7“Awake, O sword, against #Is. 40:11; Ezek. 34:23, 24; 37:24; Mic. 5:2, 4My Shepherd,

Against the Man #(John 10:30)who is My Companion,”

Says the Lord of hosts.

#Matt. 26:31, 56, 67; Mark 14:27; 1 Pet. 5:4; Rev. 7:16, 17“Strike the Shepherd,

And the sheep will be scattered;

Then I will turn My hand against #Luke 12:32the little ones.

8And it shall come to pass in all the land,”

Says the Lord,

“That #Is. 6:13; Ezek. 5:2, 4, 12two-thirds in it shall be cut off and die,

#(Rom. 11:5)But one–third shall be left in it:

9I will bring the one–third #Is. 48:10; Ezek. 20:38; Mal. 3:3through the fire,

Will #1 Pet. 1:6, 7refine them as silver is refined,

And test them as gold is tested.

#Ps. 50:15; Zeph. 3:9; (Zech. 12:10)They will call on My name,

And I will answer them.

#Jer. 30:22; Hos. 2:23I will say, ‘This is My people’;

And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”
