Psalms 10
10
1O Lord, why do you stand so far away?
Why do you hide when I am in trouble?
2The wicked arrogantly hunt down the poor.
Let them be caught in the evil they plan for others.
3For they brag about their evil desires;
they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.
4The wicked are too proud to seek God.
They seem to think that God is dead.
5Yet they succeed in everything they do.
They do not see your punishment awaiting them.
They sneer at all their enemies.
6They think, “Nothing bad will ever happen to us!
We will be free of trouble forever!”
7Their mouths are full of cursing, lies, and threats.#10:7 Greek version reads cursing and bitterness. Compare Rom 3:14.
Trouble and evil are on the tips of their tongues.
8They lurk in ambush in the villages,
waiting to murder innocent people.
They are always searching for helpless victims.
9Like lions crouched in hiding,
they wait to pounce on the helpless.
Like hunters they capture the helpless
and drag them away in nets.
10Their helpless victims are crushed;
they fall beneath the strength of the wicked.
11The wicked think, “God isn’t watching us!
He has closed his eyes and won’t even see what we do!”
12Arise, O Lord!
Punish the wicked, O God!
Do not ignore the helpless!
13Why do the wicked get away with despising God?
They think, “God will never call us to account.”
14But you see the trouble and grief they cause.
You take note of it and punish them.
The helpless put their trust in you.
You defend the orphans.
15Break the arms of these wicked, evil people!
Go after them until the last one is destroyed.
16The Lord is king forever and ever!
The godless nations will vanish from the land.
17 Lord, you know the hopes of the helpless.
Surely you will hear their cries and comfort them.
18You will bring justice to the orphans and the oppressed,
so mere people can no longer terrify them.

Why Do You Hide Yourself?
1Why, O Lord, do you stand #Ps. 22:1, 11, 19; 35:22; 38:21 far away?
Why #Ps. 13:1 do you hide yourself in #Ps. 9:9times of trouble?
2In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor;
let them #[Ps. 7:15, 16]be caught in the schemes that they have devised.
3For the wicked #Ps. 94:4; [Isa. 3:9] boasts of the desires of his soul,
and the one greedy for gain #ver. 13 curses#10:3 Or and he blesses the one greedy for gain and #Job 1:5, 11renounces the Lord.
4In the pride of his face#10:4 Or of his anger the wicked does not #[See ver. 3 above] seek him;#10:4 Or the wicked says, “He will not call to account”
all his thoughts are, #Ps. 14:1; 53:1“There is no God.”
5His ways prosper at all times;
your judgments are on high, #[Isa. 26:11] out of his sight;
as for all his foes, he #Ps. 12:5puffs at them.
6He #ver. 11, 13 says in his heart, “I shall not be moved;
throughout all generations I #[Rev. 18:7]shall not meet adversity.”
7 # Cited Rom. 3:14 His mouth is filled with cursing and #Ps. 36:3 deceit and #Ps. 55:11; 72:14 oppression;
#
Job 20:12; [Ps. 140:3; Song 4:11] under his tongue are #Ps. 7:14 mischief and #Ps. 5:5; 6:8iniquity.
8He sits in ambush in the villages;
in #Ps. 17:12; 64:4; [Hab. 3:14]hiding places he murders the innocent.
His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless;
9he lurks in ambush like #Ps. 17:12 a lion in his #Job 38:40 thicket;
he #Ps. 59:3; Mic. 7:2 lurks that he may seize the poor;
he seizes the poor when he draws him into his #Ps. 9:15net.
10The helpless are crushed, sink down,
and fall by his might.
11He says in his heart, “God has forgotten,
he has #[Ps. 73:11]; Job 22:13 hidden his face, he #Ps. 94:7; Ezek. 8:12; 9:9; [Zeph. 1:12]will never see it.”
12 # See Ps. 3:7 Arise, O Lord; O God, #Mic. 5:9 lift up your hand;
#
Ps. 9:12, 18 forget not the afflicted.
13Why does the wicked #ver. 3 renounce God
and say in his heart, “You will not #Ps. 9:12call to account”?
14But you do see, for you #Ps. 33:13 note mischief and vexation,
that you may take it into your hands;
to you the helpless #2 Tim. 1:12; 1 Pet. 4:19 commits himself;
you have been #Ps. 68:5; 146:9; Hos. 14:3the helper of the fatherless.
15 # See Ps. 37:17 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer;
# [Ps. 37:36; Isa. 41:12] call his wickedness to account till you find none.

the #Deut. 8:20nations perish from his land.
17O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will #1 Chr. 29:18strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
18to #Ps. 82:3; [Isa. 1:17; 11:4] do justice to the fatherless and #Ps. 9:9; 74:21 the oppressed,
so that #Ps. 9:19, 20; 17:14man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
