Proverbs 26

1Honor is no more associated with fools

than snow with summer or rain with harvest.

2Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,

an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.

3Guide a horse with a whip, a donkey with a bridle,

and a fool with a rod to his back!

4Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools,

or you will become as foolish as they are.

5Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools,

or they will become wise in their own estimation.

6Trusting a fool to convey a message

is like cutting off one’s feet or drinking poison!

7A proverb in the mouth of a fool

is as useless as a paralyzed leg.

8Honoring a fool

is as foolish as tying a stone to a slingshot.

is like a thorny branch brandished by a drunk.

10An employer who hires a fool or a bystander

is like an archer who shoots at random.

Yes, I’m sure there’s a lion out there!”

14As a door swings back and forth on its hinges,

so the lazy person turns over in bed.

15Lazy people take food in their hand

but don’t even lift it to their mouth.

16Lazy people consider themselves smarter

than seven wise counselors.

17Interfering in someone else’s argument

is as foolish as yanking a dog’s ears.

18Just as damaging

as a madman shooting a deadly weapon

19is someone who lies to a friend

and then says, “I was only joking.”

20Fire goes out without wood,

and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.

21A quarrelsome person starts fights

as easily as hot embers light charcoal or fire lights wood.

22Rumors are dainty morsels

that sink deep into one’s heart.

24People may cover their hatred with pleasant words,

but they’re deceiving you.

25They pretend to be kind, but don’t believe them.

26While their hatred may be concealed by trickery,

their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.

27If you set a trap for others,

you will get caught in it yourself.

If you roll a boulder down on others,

it will crush you instead.

28A lying tongue hates its victims,

and flattering words cause ruin.

잠언 26

미련한 사람이 되지 말아라

1미련한 사람에게는

영예가 어울리지 않는다.

이는 마치

여름에 눈이 내리는 것과 같고,

추수 때에 비가 오는 것과 같다.

2까닭없는 저주는

아무에게도 미치지 않으니,

이는 마치 참새가 떠도는 것과 같고,

제비가 날아가는 것과 같다.

3말에게는 채찍, 나귀에게는 재갈,

# ‘미련한 사람’으로 번역된 히브리어 ‘크씰림’은 ‘어리석은 사람’으로 번역된 ‘에빌림’과 함께 도덕적 결함을 지닌 사람을 뜻함. 1:7의 주를 볼 것 미련한 사람의 등에는

매가 필요하다.

4미련한 사람이

어리석은 말을 할 때에는

대답하지 말아라.

너도 그와 같은 사람이 될까 두렵다.

5미련한 사람이

어리석은 말을 할 때에는

같은 말로 대응하여 주어라.

그가 지혜로운 체할까 두렵다.

6미련한 사람을 시켜서

소식을 보내는 것은,

제 발목을 자르거나

폭력을 불러들이는 것과 같다.

7미련한 사람이 입에 담는 잠언은,

저는 사람의 다리처럼 힘이 없다.

8미련한 사람에게

영예를 돌리는 것은,

무릿매에 돌을 올려놓는 것과 같다.

9미련한 사람이 입에 담는 잠언은,

술 취한 사람이 손에 쥐고 있는

가시나무와 같다.

10미련한 사람이나

지나가는 사람을 고용하는 것은,

궁수가

닥치는 대로

사람을 쏘아대는 것과 같다.

11개가 그 토한 것을 도로 먹듯이,

미련한 사람은

어리석은 일을 되풀이한다.

12너는 스스로 지혜롭다 하는 사람을

보았을 것이나,

그런 사람보다는

오히려 미련한 사람에게

더 희망이 있다.

13게으른 사람은 핑계 대기를

“길에 사자가 있다.

거리에 사자가 있다” 한다.

14문짝이

돌쩌귀에 붙어서 돌아가듯이,

게으른 사람은

침대에만 붙어서 뒹군다.

15게으른 사람은

밥그릇에 손을 대고서도,

입에 떠 넣기조차 귀찮아한다.

16게으른 사람은

재치 있게 대답하는 사람 일곱보다

자기가 더 지혜롭다고 생각한다.

17자기와 관계없는 싸움에

끼여드는 것은,

사람이 개의 귀를 붙잡는 것과 같다.

18횃불을 던지고 화살을 쏘아서

사람을 죽이는 미친 사람이 있다.

19이웃을 속이고서도

“농담도 못하냐?”

하고 말하는 사람도 그러하다.

20땔감이 다 떨어지면 불이 꺼지듯이,

남의 말을 잘하는 사람이 없어지면

다툼도 그친다.

21숯불 위에 숯을 더하는 것과,

타는 불에 나무를 더하는 것과 같이,

다투기를 좋아하는 사람은

불난 데 부채질을 한다.

22헐뜯기를 잘하는 사람의 말은

맛있는 음식과 같아서,

뱃속 깊은 데로 내려간다.

23악한 마음을 품고서

27함정을 파는 사람은

자기가 그 속에 빠지고,

돌을 굴리는 사람은

자기가 그 밑에 깔린다.

28거짓말을 하는 혀는

흠 없는 사람의 원수이며,

아첨하는 사람은

자기의 신세를 망친다.
