Proverbs 19

1Better to be poor and honest

than to be dishonest and a fool.

2Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good;

haste makes mistakes.

3People ruin their lives by their own foolishness

and then are angry at the Lord.

4Wealth makes many “friends”;

poverty drives them all away.

5A false witness will not go unpunished,

nor will a liar escape.

6Many seek favors from a ruler;

everyone is the friend of a person who gives gifts!

7The relatives of the poor despise them;

how much more will their friends avoid them!

Though the poor plead with them,

their friends are gone.

8To acquire wisdom is to love yourself;

people who cherish understanding will prosper.

9A false witness will not go unpunished,

and a liar will be destroyed.

10It isn’t right for a fool to live in luxury

or for a slave to rule over princes!

11Sensible people control their temper;

they earn respect by overlooking wrongs.

12The king’s anger is like a lion’s roar,

but his favor is like dew on the grass.

13A foolish child#19:13 Hebrew son; also in 19:27. is a calamity to a father;

a quarrelsome wife is as annoying as constant dripping.

14Fathers can give their sons an inheritance of houses and wealth,

but only the Lord can give an understanding wife.

15Lazy people sleep soundly,

but idleness leaves them hungry.

16Keep the commandments and keep your life;

despising them leads to death.

17If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord—

and he will repay you!

18Discipline your children while there is hope.

Otherwise you will ruin their lives.

19Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty.

If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again.

20Get all the advice and instruction you can,

so you will be wise the rest of your life.

21You can make many plans,

but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

22Loyalty makes a person attractive.

It is better to be poor than dishonest.

23Fear of the Lord leads to life,

bringing security and protection from harm.

24Lazy people take food in their hand

but don’t even lift it to their mouth.

25If you punish a mocker, the simpleminded will learn a lesson;

if you correct the wise, they will be all the wiser.

26Children who mistreat their father or chase away their mother

are an embarrassment and a public disgrace.

27If you stop listening to instruction, my child,

you will turn your back on knowledge.

28A corrupt witness makes a mockery of justice;

the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.

29Punishment is made for mockers,

and the backs of fools are made to be beaten.

잠언 19

참는 것이 지혜

1거짓말을 하며

미련하게 사는 사람보다는,

가난해도

흠 없이 사는 사람이 낫다.

2지식이 없는 열심은

좋은 것이라 할 수 없고,

너무 서둘러도 발을 헛디딘다.

3사람은 미련해서

스스로 길을 잘못 들고도,

마음 속으로 주님을 원망한다.

4재물은 친구를 많이 모으나,

궁핍하면 친구도 떠난다.

5거짓 증인은 벌을 피할 수 없고,

거짓말을 하는 사람도

벌을 피할 길이 없다.

6너그럽게 주는 사람에게는

은혜 입기를 원하는 사람이 많고,

선물을 잘 주는 사람에게는

모두가 친구이다.

7가난하면 친척도 그를 싫어하는데,

하물며

친구가 그를 멀리하지 않겠느냐?

뒤따라가며 말을 붙이려 하여도,

아무런 소용이 없다.

8지혜를 얻는 사람은

자기 영혼을 사랑하고,

명철을 지키는 사람은 복을 얻는다.

9거짓 증인은 벌을 피할 수 없고,

거짓말을 하는 사람은 망하고 만다.

10미련한 사람이

사치스럽게 사는 것도

마땅하지 않은데,

하물며

종이 고관들을 다스리는 것이랴?

11노하기를 더디 하는 것은

사람의 슬기요,

허물을 덮어 주는 것은

그의 영광이다.

12왕의 분노는

사자가 소리지르는 것과 같고,

그의 은혜는

풀 위에 내리는 이슬과 같다.

13미련한 아들은

아버지에게 파멸을 가져다 주고,

다투기를 잘하는 아내는

새는 천장에서 떨어지는 물과 같다.

14집과 재물은

조상에게서 물려받은 유산이지만,

슬기로운 아내는 주님께서 주신다.

15게으른 사람은 깊은 잠에 빠지고,

나태한 사람은 굶주릴 것이다.

16계명을 지키는 사람은

제 목숨을 지키지만,

자기 행실을 주의하지 않는 사람은

죽는다.

17가난한 사람에게

은혜를 베푸는 것은

주님께 꾸어드리는 것이니,

주님께서

그 선행을 넉넉하게 갚아 주신다.

18네 아들을 훈계하여라.

그래야 희망이 있다.

그러나

그를 죽일 생각은 품지 말아야 한다.

19성격이 불 같은 사람은 벌을 받는다.

네가 그를 구하여 준다고 해도

그 때뿐,

구하여 줄 일이 또 생길 것이다.

20충고를 듣고 훈계를 받아들여라.

그리하면 마침내 지혜롭게 된다.

21사람의 마음에 많은 계획이 있어도,

성취되는 것은

오직 주님의 뜻뿐이다.

22 # 또는 ‘사람의 탐욕은 그의 부끄러움이다’ 사람에게서 바랄 것은 성실이다.

거짓말쟁이가 되느니,

차라리 가난뱅이가 되는 것이 낫다.

23주님을 경외하며 살면

생명을 얻는다.

그는 만족스러운 생활을 하며,

재앙을 만나지 않는다.

24게으른 사람은

밥그릇에 손을 대고서도,

입에 떠 넣기를 귀찮아한다.

25오만한 사람을 치면,

# ‘어수룩한 사람’으로 번역된 히브리어 ‘프타임’은 도덕적 방향감각이 없어서 악으로 기울어질 수 있는 단순한 사람을 일컬음(22, 32절 참조) 어수룩한 사람도 깨닫는다.

명철한 사람을 꾸짖으면,

그가 지식을 얻는다.

26아버지를 구박하고

어머니를 쫓아내는 자식은,

부끄러움과 수치를 끌어들이는

자식이다.

27 # 히, ‘내 아들아’. 스승이 제자를 부르는 말 아이들아,

지식의 말씀에서

벗어나게 하는 훈계는

듣지 말아라.

28악한 증인은 정의를 비웃고,

악인의 입은

죄악을 통째로 삼킨다.

29오만한 사람에게는

심판이 준비되어 있고,
