Numbers 2

Organization for Israel’s Camp
1Then the Lord gave these instructions to Moses and Aaron: 2“When the Israelites set up camp, each tribe will be assigned its own area. The tribal divisions will camp beneath their family banners on all four sides of the Tabernacle,#2:2 Hebrew the Tent of Meeting; also in 2:17. but at some distance from it.
3-4“The divisions of Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun are to camp toward the sunrise on the east side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:
| Tribe | Leader | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Judah | Nahshon son of Amminadab | 74,600 |
| 5-6Issachar | Nethanel son of Zuar | 54,400 |
| 7-8Zebulun | Eliab son of Helon | 57,400 |
9So the total of all the troops on Judah’s side of the camp is 186,400. These three tribes are to lead the way whenever the Israelites travel to a new campsite.
10-11“The divisions of Reuben, Simeon, and Gad are to camp on the south side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:
| Tribe | Leader | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Reuben | Elizur son of Shedeur | 46,500 |
| 12-13Simeon | Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai | 59,300 |
| 14-15Gad | Eliasaph son of Deuel#2:14-15 As in many Hebrew manuscripts, Samaritan Pentateuch, and Latin Vulgate (see also 1:14); most Hebrew manuscripts read son of Reuel. | 45,650 |
16So the total of all the troops on Reuben’s side of the camp is 151,450. These three tribes will be second in line whenever the Israelites travel.
17“Then the Tabernacle, carried by the Levites, will set out from the middle of the camp. All the tribes are to travel in the same order that they camp, each in position under the appropriate family banner.
18-19“The divisions of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin are to camp on the west side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:
| Tribe | Leader | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Ephraim | Elishama son of Ammihud | 40,500 |
| 20-21Manasseh | Gamaliel son of Pedahzur | 32,200 |
| 22-23Benjamin | Abidan son of Gideoni | 35,400 |
24So the total of all the troops on Ephraim’s side of the camp is 108,100. These three tribes will be third in line whenever the Israelites travel.
25-26“The divisions of Dan, Asher, and Naphtali are to camp on the north side of the Tabernacle, beneath their family banners. These are the names of the tribes, their leaders, and the numbers of their registered troops:
| Tribe | Leader | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Dan | Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai | 62,700 |
| 27-28Asher | Pagiel son of Ocran | 41,500 |
| 29-30Naphtali | Ahira son of Enan | 53,400 |
31So the total of all the troops on Dan’s side of the camp is 157,600. These three tribes will be last, marching under their banners whenever the Israelites travel.”
32In summary, the troops of Israel listed by their families totaled 603,550. 33But as the Lord had commanded, the Levites were not included in this registration. 34So the people of Israel did everything as the Lord had commanded Moses. Each clan and family set up camp and marched under their banners exactly as the Lord had instructed them.

The Tribes and Leaders by Armies
1And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2#Num. 1:52; 24:2“Everyone of the children of Israel shall camp by his own standard, beside the emblems of his father’s house; they shall camp #Josh. 3:4some distance from the tabernacle of meeting. 3On the #Num. 10:5east side, toward the rising of the sun, those of the standard of the forces with Judah shall camp according to their armies; and #Num. 1:7; 7:12; 10:14; Ruth 4:20; 1 Chr. 2:10; Matt. 1:4; Luke 3:32, 33Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be the leader of the children of Judah.” 4And his army was numbered at seventy-four thousand six hundred.
5“Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, and Nethanel the son of Zuar shall be the leader of the children of Issachar.” 6And his army was numbered at fifty-four thousand four hundred.
7“Then comes the tribe of Zebulun, and Eliab the son of Helon shall be the leader of the children of Zebulun.” 8And his army was numbered at fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 9“All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Judah, one hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred—#Num. 10:14these shall break camp first.
10“On the #Num. 10:6south side shall be the standard of the forces with Reuben according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.” 11And his army was numbered at forty-six thousand five hundred.
12“Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon, and the leader of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.” 13And his army was numbered at fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
14“Then comes the tribe of Gad, and the leader of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.” 15And his army was numbered at forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 16“All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Reuben, one hundred and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty—#Num. 10:18they shall be the second to break camp.
17#Num. 10:17, 21“And the tabernacle of meeting shall move out with the camp of the Levites #Num. 1:53in the middle of the camps; as they camp, so they shall move out, everyone in his place, by their standards.
18“On the west side shall be the standard of the forces with Ephraim according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.” 19And his army was numbered at forty thousand five hundred.
20“Next to him comes the tribe of Manasseh, and the leader of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.” 21And his army was numbered at thirty-two thousand two hundred.
22“Then comes the tribe of Benjamin, and the leader of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.” 23And his army was numbered at thirty-five thousand four hundred. 24“All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Ephraim, one hundred and eight thousand one hundred—#Num. 10:22they shall be the third to break camp.
25“The standard of the forces with Dan shall be on the north side according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.” 26And his army was numbered at sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
27“Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher, and the leader of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran.” 28And his army was numbered at forty-one thousand five hundred.
29“Then comes the tribe of Naphtali, and the leader of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.” 30And his army was numbered at fifty-three thousand four hundred. 31“All who were numbered of the forces with Dan, one hundred and fifty-seven thousand six hundred—#Num. 10:25they shall break camp last, with their standards.”
32These are the ones who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers’ houses. #Ex. 38:26; Num. 1:46; 11:21All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 33But #Num. 1:47; 26:57–62the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel, just as the Lord commanded Moses.
34Thus the children of Israel #Num. 1:54did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses; #Num. 24:2, 5, 6so they camped by their standards and so they broke camp, each one by his family, according to their fathers’ houses.
