Ai Defeats the Israelites
1But Israel violated the instructions about the things set apart for the Lord.#7:1a The Hebrew term used here refers to the complete consecration of things or people to the Lord, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering; similarly in 7:11, 12, 13, 15. A man named Achan had stolen some of these dedicated things, so the Lord was very angry with the Israelites. Achan was the son of Carmi, a descendant of Zimri#7:1b As in parallel text at 1 Chr 2:6; Hebrew reads Zabdi. Also in 7:17, 18. son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah.
2Joshua sent some of his men from Jericho to spy out the town of Ai, east of Bethel, near Beth-aven. 3When they returned, they told Joshua, “There’s no need for all of us to go up there; it won’t take more than two or three thousand men to attack Ai. Since there are so few of them, don’t make all our people struggle to go up there.”
4So approximately 3,000 warriors were sent, but they were soundly defeated. The men of Ai 5chased the Israelites from the town gate as far as the quarries,#7:5 Or as far as Shebarim. and they killed about thirty-six who were retreating down the slope. The Israelites were paralyzed with fear at this turn of events, and their courage melted away.
6Joshua and the elders of Israel tore their clothing in dismay, threw dust on their heads, and bowed face down to the ground before the Ark of the Lord until evening. 7Then Joshua cried out, “Oh, Sovereign Lord, why did you bring us across the Jordan River if you are going to let the Amorites kill us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side! 8Lord, what can I say now that Israel has fled from its enemies? 9For when the Canaanites and all the other people living in the land hear about it, they will surround us and wipe our name off the face of the earth. And then what will happen to the honor of your great name?”
10But the Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why are you lying on your face like this? 11Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen some of the things that I commanded must be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them but have lied about it and hidden the things among their own belongings. 12That is why the Israelites are running from their enemies in defeat. For now Israel itself has been set apart for destruction. I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction.
13“Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.
14“In the morning you must present yourselves by tribes, and the Lord will point out the tribe to which the guilty man belongs. That tribe must come forward with its clans, and the Lord will point out the guilty clan. That clan will then come forward, and the Lord will point out the guilty family. Finally, each member of the guilty family must come forward one by one. 15The one who has stolen what was set apart for destruction will himself be burned with fire, along with everything he has, for he has broken the covenant of the Lord and has done a horrible thing in Israel.”
Achan’s Sin
16Early the next morning Joshua brought the tribes of Israel before the Lord, and the tribe of Judah was singled out. 17Then the clans of Judah came forward, and the clan of Zerah was singled out. Then the families of Zerah came forward, and the family of Zimri was singled out. 18Every member of Zimri’s family was brought forward person by person, and Achan was singled out.
19Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, by telling the truth. Make your confession and tell me what you have done. Don’t hide it from me.”
20Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. 21Among the plunder I saw a beautiful robe from Babylon,#7:21a Hebrew Shinar. 200 silver coins,#7:21b Hebrew 200 shekels of silver, about 5 pounds or 2.3 kilograms in weight. and a bar of gold weighing more than a pound.#7:21c Hebrew 50 shekels, about 20 ounces or 570 grams in weight. I wanted them so much that I took them. They are hidden in the ground beneath my tent, with the silver buried deeper than the rest.”
22So Joshua sent some men to make a search. They ran to the tent and found the stolen goods hidden there, just as Achan had said, with the silver buried beneath the rest. 23They took the things from the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites. Then they laid them on the ground in the presence of the Lord.
24Then Joshua and all the Israelites took Achan, the silver, the robe, the bar of gold, his sons, daughters, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, tent, and everything he had, and they brought them to the valley of Achor. 25Then Joshua said to Achan, “Why have you brought trouble on us? The Lord will now bring trouble on you.” And all the Israelites stoned Achan and his family and burned their bodies. 26They piled a great heap of stones over Achan, which remains to this day. That is why the place has been called the Valley of Trouble#7:26 Hebrew valley of Achor. ever since. So the Lord was no longer angry.

Israel Defeated at Ai
1But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things, for #ch. 22:20; [1 Chr. 2:6, 7]Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. And the anger of the Lord burned against the people of Israel.
2Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near #ch. 18:12; 1 Sam. 13:5; 14:23; Hos. 4:15; 5:8; 10:5Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, “Go up and spy out the land.” And the men went up and spied out Ai. 3And they returned to Joshua and said to him, “Do not have all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai. Do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are few.” 4So about three thousand men went up there from the people. And #Lev. 26:17; Deut. 28:25they fled before the men of Ai, 5and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six of their men and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim and struck them at the descent. And the hearts of the people #ch. 2:9, 11melted and became as water.
6Then Joshua #Gen. 37:29, 34; Num. 14:6; 2 Sam. 1:11; 13:31 tore his clothes and #Num. 14:5 fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, he and the elders of Israel. And they put #1 Sam. 4:12dust on their heads. 7And Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, #Ex. 5:22; 2 Kgs. 3:10why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan! 8O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies! 9For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it and will surround us and #Ps. 83:4cut off our name from the earth. And what will you do for your great name?”
The Sin of Achan
10The Lord said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face? 11Israel has sinned; they have #ver. 15 transgressed my covenant that I commanded them; they have taken some of the #ch. 6:17, 18devoted things; they have stolen and lied and put them among their own belongings. 12#Num. 14:45; Judg. 2:14 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies. They #ver. 8 turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become #ch. 6:18 devoted for destruction.#7:12 That is, set apart (devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction) I will be with you no more, unless you destroy #ver. 11the devoted things from among you. 13Get up! Consecrate the people and say, #ch. 3:5‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the Lord, God of Israel, “There are devoted things in your midst, O Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted things from among you.” 14In the morning therefore you shall be brought near #1 Sam. 10:19by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. 15#1 Sam. 14:38, 39 And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has #ver. 11 transgressed the covenant of the Lord, and because he has done #Gen. 34:7; Judg. 20:6an outrageous thing in Israel.’”
16So Joshua rose early in the morning and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken. 17And he brought near the clans of Judah, and the clan of the #Num. 26:20Zerahites was taken. And he brought near the clan of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken. 18And he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. 19Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, #1 Sam. 6:5; Jer. 13:16; Mal. 2:2; John 9:24 give glory to the Lord God of Israel and #Num. 5:6, 7; 2 Chr. 30:22; Ezra 10:11; Dan. 9:4 give praise#7:19 Or and make confession to him. And #1 Sam. 14:43tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me.” 20And Achan answered Joshua, “Truly #2 Sam. 12:13I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel, and this is what I did: 21when I saw among the spoil a beautiful cloak from Shinar, and 200 shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing 50 shekels,#7:21 A shekel was about 2/5 ounce or 11 grams then I coveted them and took them. And see, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath. 23And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and to all the people of Israel. And they laid them down before the Lord. 24And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the #ver. 26; ch. 15:7; Isa. 65:10; Hos. 2:15Valley of Achor. 25And Joshua said, “Why did you #ch. 6:18; 1 Chr. 2:7 bring trouble on us? The Lord brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel #Lev. 20:2; 24:14 stoned him with stones. #ch. 22:20They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. 26And they raised over him #ch. 8:29; 2 Sam. 18:17; [Lam. 3:53] a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Then #Deut. 13:17the Lord turned from his burning anger. Therefore, to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.#7:26 Achor means trouble
