Hebrews 5
5
1Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins. 2And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. 3That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
4And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. 5That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,
“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.#5:5 Or Today I reveal you as my Son. Ps 2:7.”
6And in another passage God said to him,
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”#5:6 Ps 110:4.
7While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God. 8Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. 9In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. 10And God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.
A Call to Spiritual Growth
11There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen. 12You have been believers so long now that you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things about God’s word.#5:12 Or about the oracles of God. You are like babies who need milk and cannot eat solid food. 13For someone who lives on milk is still an infant and doesn’t know how to do what is right. 14Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.

Qualifications for High Priesthood
1For every high priest taken from among men #Heb. 2:17; 8:3is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to #Heb. 7:28weakness. 3Because of this he is required as for the people, so also for #Lev. 9:7; 16:6; (Heb. 7:27; 9:7)himself, to offer sacrifices for sins. 4And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as #Ex. 28:1; Num. 16:40; 1 Chr. 23:13Aaron was.
A Priest Forever
5#John 8:54So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:
#Ps. 2:7“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.”
6As He also says in another place:
#Ps. 110:4; Heb. 7:17“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek”;
7who, in the days of His flesh, when He had #Matt. 26:39, 42, 44; Mark 14:36, 39; Luke 22:41, 44offered up prayers and supplications, #Ps. 22:1with vehement cries and tears to Him #Matt. 26:53who was able to save Him from death, and was heard #Matt. 26:39because of His godly fear, 8though He was a Son, yet He learned #Phil. 2:8obedience by the things which He suffered. 9And #Heb. 2:10having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, 10called by God as High Priest #Ps. 110:4“according to the order of Melchizedek,” 11of whom #(John 16:12); Heb. 7:1–22we have much to say, and hard to explain, since you have become #(Matt. 13:15)dull of hearing.
Spiritual Immaturity
12For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need #1 Cor. 3:1–3; 1 Pet. 2:2milk and not solid food. 13For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is #Eph. 4:14a babe. 14But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised #Is. 7:15; Phil. 1:9to discern both good and evil.
