2 John 1
1
Greetings
1This letter is from John, the elder.#1:1a Greek From the elder.
I am writing to the chosen lady and to her children,#1:1b Or the church God has chosen and its members. whom I love in the truth—as does everyone else who knows the truth— 2because the truth lives in us and will be with us forever.
3Grace, mercy, and peace, which come from God the Father and from Jesus Christ—the Son of the Father—will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.
Live in the Truth
4How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living according to the truth, just as the Father commanded.
5I am writing to remind you, dear friends,#1:5 Greek I urge you, lady. that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. 6Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.
7I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came#1:7 Or will come. in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. 8Watch out that you do not lose what we#1:8 Some manuscripts read you. have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. 9Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.
10If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don’t invite that person into your home or give any kind of encouragement. 11Anyone who encourages such people becomes a partner in their evil work.
Conclusion
12I have much more to say to you, but I don’t want to do it with paper and ink. For I hope to visit you soon and talk with you face to face. Then our joy will be complete.
13Greetings from the children of your sister,#1:13 Or from the members of your sister church. chosen by God.

1Greetings from the Elder.#1:1 Elder This is probably John the apostle. “Elder” means an older man or a special leader in the church (as in Titus 1:5).
To the lady#1:1 lady This might mean a woman. Or, in this letter, it might mean a church. If it is a church, then “her children” would be the people of the church. Also in verse 5. chosen by God and to her children.
I truly love all of you. And I am not the only one. All those who know the truth#1:1 truth The truth or “Good News” about Jesus Christ that joins all believers together. love you in the same way. 2We love you because of the truth—the truth that lives in us. That truth will be with us forever.
3Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us from God the Father and from his Son, Jesus Christ, as we live in truth and love.
4I was very happy to learn about some of your children. I am happy that they are following the way of truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5And now, dear lady, I tell you: We should all love each other. This is not a new command. It is the same command we had from the beginning. 6And loving means living the way he commanded us to live. And God’s command is this: that you live a life of love. You heard this command from the beginning.
7Many false teachers are in the world now. They refuse to say that Jesus Christ came to earth and became a man. Anyone who refuses to accept this fact is a false teacher and the enemy of Christ. 8Be careful! Don’t lose the reward we#1:8 we Some Greek copies have “you.” have worked for. Be careful so that you will receive all of that reward.
9Everyone must continue to follow only the teaching about Christ. Whoever changes that teaching does not have God. But whoever continues to follow the teaching about Christ has both the Father and his Son. 10Don’t accept those who come to you but do not bring this teaching. Don’t invite them into your house. Don’t welcome them in any way. 11If you do, you are helping them with their evil work.
12I have much to say to you. But I don’t want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come visit you. Then we can be together and talk. That will make us very happy. 13The children of your sister#1:13 sister Sister of the “lady” in verse 1. This might be another woman or another church. who was chosen by God send you their love.
