2 Chronicles 19

Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges
1When King Jehoshaphat of Judah arrived safely home in Jerusalem, 2Jehu son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him. “Why should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord?” he asked the king. “Because of what you have done, the Lord is very angry with you. 3Even so, there is some good in you, for you have removed the Asherah poles throughout the land, and you have committed yourself to seeking God.”
4Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, but he went out among the people, traveling from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim, encouraging the people to return to the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 5He appointed judges throughout the nation in all the fortified towns, 6and he said to them, “Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the Lord. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case. 7Fear the Lord and judge with integrity, for the Lord our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes.”
8In Jerusalem, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites and priests and clan leaders in Israel to serve as judges#19:8 As in Greek version; the meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain. for cases involving the Lord’s regulations and for civil disputes. 9These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the Lord, with faithfulness and an undivided heart. 10Whenever a case comes to you from fellow citizens in an outlying town, whether a murder case or some other violation of God’s laws, commands, decrees, or regulations, you must warn them not to sin against the Lord, so that he will not be angry with you and them. Do this and you will not be guilty.
11“Amariah the high priest will have final say in all cases involving the Lord. Zebadiah son of Ishmael, a leader from the tribe of Judah, will have final say in all civil cases. The Levites will assist you in making sure that justice is served. Take courage as you fulfill your duties, and may the Lord be with those who do what is right.”

1Upon the safe arrival of Judah’s King Jehoshaphat to his palace in Jerusalem, 2Jehu son of Hanani the seer came out to meet him and said, “Why did you help the wicked? Why have you loved those who hate the LORD? This is why the LORD is angry with you. 3Nevertheless, there is some good to be found in you, in that you have removed the sacred poles#19.3 Heb asherot, perhaps objects devoted to the goddess Asherah from the land and set your mind to seek God.”
Jehoshaphat’s reforms
4Though Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, he regularly went out among the people between Beer-sheba and Ephraim’s highlands, and encouraged them to return to the LORD, the God of their ancestors. 5He appointed judges throughout the land in each of the fortified cities of Judah, 6instructing them, “Be careful when you pass judgment. You aren’t dispensing justice by merely human standards but for the LORD, who is with you. 7Therefore, respect the LORD and act accordingly, because there can be no injustice, playing favorites, or taking bribes when it comes to the LORD our God.”
8Jehoshaphat also appointed judges in Jerusalem from among the Levites, the priests, and the family heads of Israel to administer the LORD’s Instruction and to settle disputes among those living#19.8 LXX, Vulg; MT they returned to Jerusalem in Jerusalem. 9He instructed them, “You must respect the LORD at all times, in truth, and with complete integrity. 10In any case that comes before you from a fellow citizen in an outlying town, whether it involves bloodshed or is an issue of instruction, commandment, regulations, or case laws, you must warn them not to sin against the LORD, consequently making him angry with both you and your fellow citizen. Do this, and you won’t sin. 11Amariah the chief priest will be in charge of all religious matters, and Zebadiah, Ishmael’s son, the leader of Judah’s house, will be in charge of all civil matters. The Levites will serve as your officers of the court. Carry out your duties with confidence, and may the LORD be with those who do good.”
