1 Thessalonians 1
1
Greetings from Paul
1This letter is from Paul, Silas,#1:1 Greek Silvanus, the Greek form of the name. and Timothy.
We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
May God give you grace and peace.
The Faith of the Thessalonian Believers
2We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly. 3As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ.
4We know, dear brothers and sisters,#1:4 Greek brothers. that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. 5For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance#1:5 Or with the power of the Holy Spirit, so you can have full assurance. that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. 6So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. 7As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece—throughout both Macedonia and Achaia.#1:7 Macedonia and Achaia were the northern and southern regions of Greece.
8And now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere, even beyond Macedonia and Achaia, for wherever we go we find people telling us about your faith in God. We don’t need to tell them about it, 9for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and true God. 10And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God’s Son from heaven—Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.

Their Good Example
2#Rom. 1:8; 2 Thess. 1:3We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3remembering without ceasing #John 6:29your work of faith, #Rom. 16:6labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father, 4knowing, beloved brethren, #Col. 3:12your election by God. 5For #Mark 16:20our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, #2 Cor. 6:6and in the Holy Spirit #Heb. 2:3and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.
6And #1 Cor. 4:16; 11:1you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, #Acts 5:41; 13:52; 2 Cor. 6:10; Gal. 5:22with joy of the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. 8For from you the word of the Lord #Rom. 10:18has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also #Rom. 1:8; 16:19; 2 Cor. 2:14; 2 Thess. 1:4in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. 9For they themselves declare concerning us #1 Thess. 2:1what manner of entry we had to you, #1 Cor. 12:2and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10and #(Rom. 2:7)to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us #Matt. 3:7; Rom. 5:9from the wrath to come.
