David’s Instructions to Solomon
1David summoned all the officials of Israel to Jerusalem—the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of the army divisions, the other generals and captains,#28:1 Hebrew the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. the overseers of the royal property and livestock, the palace officials, the mighty men, and all the other brave warriors in the kingdom. 2David rose to his feet and said: “My brothers and my people! It was my desire to build a Temple where the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, God’s footstool, could rest permanently. I made the necessary preparations for building it, 3but God said to me, ‘You must not build a Temple to honor my name, for you are a warrior and have shed much blood.’
4“Yet the Lord, the God of Israel, has chosen me from among all my father’s family to be king over Israel forever. For he has chosen the tribe of Judah to rule, and from among the families of Judah he chose my father’s family. And from among my father’s sons the Lord was pleased to make me king over all Israel. 5And from among my sons—for the Lord has given me many—he chose Solomon to succeed me on the throne of Israel and to rule over the Lord’s kingdom. 6He said to me, ‘Your son Solomon will build my Temple and its courtyards, for I have chosen him as my son, and I will be his father. 7And if he continues to obey my commands and regulations as he does now, I will make his kingdom last forever.’
8“So now, with God as our witness, and in the sight of all Israel—the Lord’s assembly—I give you this charge. Be careful to obey all the commands of the Lord your God, so that you may continue to possess this good land and leave it to your children as a permanent inheritance.
9“And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors intimately. Worship and serve him with your whole heart and a willing mind. For the Lord sees every heart and knows every plan and thought. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you forsake him, he will reject you forever. 10So take this seriously. The Lord has chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong, and do the work.”
11Then David gave Solomon the plans for the Temple and its surroundings, including the entry room, the storerooms, the upstairs rooms, the inner rooms, and the inner sanctuary—which was the place of atonement. 12David also gave Solomon all the plans he had in mind#28:12 Or the plans of the spirit that was with him. for the courtyards of the Lord’s Temple, the outside rooms, the treasuries, and the rooms for the gifts dedicated to the Lord. 13The king also gave Solomon the instructions concerning the work of the various divisions of priests and Levites in the Temple of the Lord. And he gave specifications for the items in the Temple that were to be used for worship.
14David gave instructions regarding how much gold and silver should be used to make the items needed for service. 15He told Solomon the amount of gold needed for the gold lampstands and lamps, and the amount of silver for the silver lampstands and lamps, depending on how each would be used. 16He designated the amount of gold for the table on which the Bread of the Presence would be placed and the amount of silver for other tables.
17David also designated the amount of gold for the solid gold meat hooks used to handle the sacrificial meat and for the basins, pitchers, and dishes, as well as the amount of silver for every dish. 18He designated the amount of refined gold for the altar of incense. Finally, he gave him a plan for the Lord’s “chariot”—the gold cherubim#28:18 Hebrew for the gold cherub chariot. whose wings were stretched out over the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant. 19“Every part of this plan,” David told Solomon, “was given to me in writing from the hand of the Lord.#28:19 Or was written under the direction of the Lord.”
20Then David continued, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. He will see to it that all the work related to the Temple of the Lord is finished correctly. 21The various divisions of priests and Levites will serve in the Temple of God. Others with skills of every kind will volunteer, and the officials and the entire nation are at your command.”

Solomon Instructed to Build the Temple
1Now David assembled at Jerusalem all #1 Chr. 27:16the leaders of Israel: the officers of the tribes and #1 Chr. 27:1, 2the captains of the divisions who served the king, the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, and #1 Chr. 27:25the stewards over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officials, the valiant men, and all #2 Sam. 23:8–39; 1 Chr. 11:10–47the mighty men of valor.
2Then King David rose to his feet and said, “Hear me, my brethren and my people: #2 Sam. 7:2I had it in my heart to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and for #Ps. 99:5; 132:7; (Is. 66:1)the footstool of our God, and had made preparations to build it. 3But God said to me, #2 Sam. 7:5, 13; 1 Kin. 5:3‘You shall not build a house for My name, because you have been a man of war and have shed #(1 Chr. 17:4; 22:8)blood.’ 4However the Lord God of Israel #1 Sam. 16:6–13chose me above all the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for He has chosen #Gen. 49:8–10; 1 Chr. 5:2; Ps. 60:7Judah to be the ruler. And of the house of Judah, #1 Sam. 16:1the house of my father, and #1 Sam. 13:14; 16:12, 13; Acts 13:22among the sons of my father, He was pleased with me to make me king over all Israel. 5#1 Chr. 3:1–9; 14:3–7; 23:1And of all my sons (for the Lord has given me many sons) #1 Chr. 22:9; 29:1He has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the Lord over Israel. 6Now He said to me, ‘It is #2 Sam. 7:13, 14; 1 Kin. 6:38; 1 Chr. 22:9, 10; 2 Chr. 1:9; 6:2your son Solomon who shall build My house and My courts; for I have chosen him to be My son, and I will be his Father. 7Moreover I will establish his kingdom forever, #1 Chr. 22:13if he is steadfast to observe My commandments and My judgments, as it is this day.’ 8Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the Lord, and in the hearing of our God, be careful to seek out all the commandments of the Lord your God, that you may possess this good land, and leave it as an inheritance for your children after you forever.
9“As for you, my son Solomon, #(1 Sam. 12:24); Jer. 9:24; Hos. 4:1; (John 17:3)know the God of your father, and serve Him #2 Kin. 20:3with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for #(1 Sam. 16:7; 1 Kin. 8:39; 1 Chr. 29:17); Jer. 11:20; 17:10; 20:12; Rev. 2:23the Lord searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. #2 Chr. 15:2; (Jer. 29:13)If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will #Deut. 31:17cast you off forever. 10Consider now, #1 Chr. 22:13; 28:6for the Lord has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be strong, and do it.”
11Then David gave his son Solomon #1 Kin. 6:3; 1 Chr. 28:19the plans for the vestibule, its houses, its treasuries, its upper chambers, its inner chambers, and the place of the mercy seat; 12and the #Ex. 25:40; Heb. 8:5plans for all that he had by the Spirit, of the courts of the house of the Lord, of all the chambers all around, #1 Chr. 26:20, 28of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries for the dedicated things; 13also for the division of the priests and the #1 Chr. 23:6Levites, for all the work of the service of the house of the Lord, and for all the articles of service in the house of the Lord. 14He gave gold by weight for things of gold, for all articles used in every kind of service; also silver for all articles of silver by weight, for all articles used in every kind of service; 15the weight for the #Ex. 25:31–39; 1 Kin. 7:49lampstands of gold, and their lamps of gold, by weight for each lampstand and its lamps; for the lampstands of silver by weight, for the lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand. 16And by weight he gave gold for the tables of the showbread, for each #1 Kin. 7:48table, and silver for the tables of silver; 17also pure gold for the forks, the basins, the pitchers of pure gold, and the golden bowls—he gave gold by weight for every bowl; and for the silver bowls, silver by weight for every bowl; 18and refined gold by weight for the #Ex. 30:1–10altar of incense, and for the construction of the chariot, that is, the gold #Ex. 25:18–22; 1 Sam. 4:4; 1 Kin. 6:23cherubim that spread their wings and overshadowed the ark of the covenant of the Lord. 19“All this,” said David, #Ex. 25:40; 1 Chr. 28:11, 12“the Lord made me understand in writing, by His hand upon me, all the works of these plans.”
20And David said to his son Solomon, #Deut. 31:6, 7; (Josh. 1:6–9); 1 Chr. 22:13“Be strong and of good courage, and do it; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God—my God—will be with you. #Josh. 1:5; Heb. 13:5He will not leave you nor forsake you, until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord. 21Here are #1 Chr. 24—26the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all the service of the house of God; and #Ex. 35:25–35; 36:1, 2; 2 Chr. 2:13, 14every willing craftsman will be with you for all manner of workmanship, for every kind of service; also the leaders and all the people will be completely at your command.”
