Seventh Seal: Prelude to the Seven Trumpets
1When#Rev. 6:1 He opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. 2#(Matt. 18:10); Luke 1:19And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, #2 Chr. 29:25–28and to them were given seven trumpets. 3Then another angel, having a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense, that he should offer it with #Rev. 5:8the prayers of all the saints upon #Ex. 30:1; Rev. 8:3the golden altar which was before the throne. 4And #Ps. 141:2; Luke 1:10the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand. 5Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it to the earth. And #Ex. 19:16; Rev. 11:19; 16:18there were noises, thunderings, #Rev. 4:5lightnings, #2 Sam. 22:8; 1 Kin. 19:11; Acts 4:31and an earthquake.
6So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.
First Trumpet: Vegetation Struck
7The first angel sounded: #Ex. 9:23; Is. 28:2; Ezek. 38:22; Joel 2:30And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown #Rev. 16:2to the earth. And a third #Is. 2:13; Rev. 9:4, 15–18of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.
Second Trumpet: The Seas Struck
8Then the second angel sounded: #Jer. 51:25; Amos 7:4And something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea, #Ex. 7:17; Rev. 11:6; 16:3and a third of the sea #Ezek. 14:19became blood. 9#Rev. 16:3And a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.
Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck
10Then the third angel sounded: #Is. 14:12; Rev. 6:13; 9:1And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, #Rev. 14:7; 16:4and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. 11#Ruth 1:20The name of the star is Wormwood. #Ex. 15:23A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter.
Fourth Trumpet: The Heavens Struck
12#Is. 13:10; Joel 2:31; Amos 8:9; Matt. 24:29; Rev. 6:12Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night.
13And I looked, #Rev. 14:6; 19:17and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, #Rev. 9:12; 11:14; 12:12“Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!”

The Seven Trumpets. 1When he broke open the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven#Silence in heaven: as in Zep 1:7, a prelude to the eschatological woes that are to follow; cf. Introduction. for about half an hour.#Heb 2:20; Zep 1:7; Zec 2:17. 2And I saw that the seven angels who stood before God were given seven trumpets.#4:5; Tb 12:15.
The Gold Censer. 3Another angel came and stood at the altar,#Altar: there seems to be only one altar in the heavenly temple, corresponding to the altar of holocausts in Rev 6:9, and here to the altar of incense in Jerusalem; cf. also Rev 9:13; 11:1; 14:18; 16:7. holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne.#Ps 141:2; Tb 12:12. 4The smoke of the incense along with the prayers of the holy ones went up before God from the hand of the angel. 5Then the angel took the censer, filled it with burning coals from the altar, and hurled it down to the earth. There were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.#Ez 10:2; Ps 11:6 / Rev 4:5; 11:19; 16:18.
The First Four Trumpets. 6The seven angels who were holding the seven trumpets prepared to blow them.#16:1–21.
7When the first one blew his trumpet, there came hail and fire mixed with blood, which was hurled down to the earth. A third of the land was burned up, along with a third of the trees and all green grass.#This woe resembles the seventh plague of Egypt (Ex 9:23–24); cf. Jl 3:3.
8#The background of these two woes is the first plague of Egypt (Ex 7:20–21). When the second angel blew his trumpet, something like a large burning mountain was hurled into the sea. A third of the sea turned to blood,#Ex 7:20. 9a third of the creatures living in the sea#Creatures living in the sea: literally, “creatures in the sea that had souls.” died, and a third of the ships were wrecked.
10When the third angel blew his trumpet, a large star burning like a torch fell from the sky. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.#Is 14:12. 11The star was called “Wormwood,”#Wormwood: an extremely bitter and malignant plant symbolizing the punishment God inflicts on the ungodly; cf. Jer 9:12–14; 23:15. and a third of all the water turned to wormwood. Many people died from this water, because it was made bitter.#Jer 9:14.
12When the fourth angel blew his trumpet, a third of the sun, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars were struck, so that a third of them became dark. The day lost its light for a third of the time, as did the night.#Ex 10:21–23.
13Then I looked again and heard an eagle flying high overhead cry out in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe#Woe! Woe! Woe: each of the three woes pronounced by the angel represents a separate disaster; cf. Rev 9:12; 11:14. The final woe, released by the seventh trumpet blast, includes the plagues of Rev 16. to the inhabitants of the earth from the rest of the trumpet blasts that the three angels are about to blow!”
